League Team Sponsorship

Hi, I was wanting to sponsor two APA teams when my place opens. What would be expected of me as the teams sponsor?

I know free practice time before matches and uniforms is a must. What else would be expected of me?

Sponsoring pool teams

I read your post with interest.

There have been several threads talking about leagues (mostly APA) that require open tables and free time etc.

I don't understand it - you are in the business of renting pool tables ( and probably drinks and maybe food). Why should you be expected to give away the table time and practice etc?

You ave an investment and should be allowed to make a fair return. The league players should expect to pay some table time. The most common complaint is that the 'free' players do not come to your business to practice or hang out.

Years ago I was told that if you give something away, then that is what it is worth.

At the BCAPL, We believe the pool rooms and bars should get some revenue from their pool tables. Look around- how many bars and pool rooms have gone out of business? Too many!

And any league or league operator should be aware of the venue's need to cover their expenses and make a profit. It is only fair, and it is necessary if that business is to succeed. For a league to jeopardize their host location's financial well being - for the benefit of the league operator is WRONG!

Ps. Sorry for 'the rant'- but bars and pool rooms need all the help they can get.

Make sure the tables are in good shape and are covered in decent worsted cloth i.e. Simonis 860 or Championship 3030, (not that fuzzy/nappy cheap cloth). Make sure you have decent house cues in good shape and with decent tips (no push on or screw in tips) in weights from 18 thru 21 ounces (at least two of each). Buy a gross of blue Master chalk and replace the chalk before it wears down to where it's got a big hole drilled all the way in. Get a good brush some microfiber cloths and some pool table cleaner and clean the tables before the league players get to your establishment. Those things will also help you attract players on non-league nights and help your bottom line.

Good luck on your new business!

We don't get free time, but pool time is given at a much reduced rate (about 1/2 price). In addition, we given shirts by the sponsor we wear with their logo/name on them. We get free shirts, and they get a little advertising also. We would not expect to get "free" anything in the way of equipment or playing time.

Well, there's a balance to strike. Give them things don't cost you much but are valuable to them.

This is mostly free table time when you want more bodies in your bar. For example, teams usually leave after their match is over. Free table time till close on league nights, conditional on no paying customers wanting the tables, for example. Or offer your teams free pool on a weekend afternoon, Sunday night, etc. If you have free table time before league play, they might come in for dinner more often.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I'm not sure you fully understood what I was asking.

I'm not giving free time away to all the league teams, even my teams will pay their quarters during league play. This business is about making money as the poster above said.

However, I want to sponsor TWO teams (Mixed & Womens). Those two teams I will give free practice time (before the match) and provide T-Shirts. They will be wearing these shirts at the other venues they visit which is good advertising for me.

I'm doing this because I want to get the word out about our business, and it's always a good idea to have a couple good teams representing your pool hall.

So to rephrase the question: For these two teams I want to sponsor, would anything be expected of me besides free practice time before the matches and uniforms?

I think it's cool to do as much as you're doing.

Here, the most any team gets for sponsorship is free table time on league night. The two teams that play out the Eagles club locally get their annual APA memberships paid for by the club. Beyond that, we don't see anything else.

Providing Team shirts for your teams, pretty cool!

To mark griffin

how about if you give me some free table time i will eat your food and drink you booze, bith wich have ridicusly high profit margins

thats why table time is free

Not to hijack, but when is Grand opening?? I live in Plano, its about 2 1/2 hours away, but I would like to come down & offer my support that weekend. How close is the nearest motel (that will depend on how much I support your adult beverage sales LOL).

BTW, Great website too...

Thanks for the support poolhalljunkie :)

We are going for a late Sept opening. Adding $500 both Friday and Saturday grand opening weekend. $15 entry ($10 to prize pool & $5 green fee). Hoping to get up to a $1000 prize pool both nights.

Ya there are a few hotels within a mile of the place hehe. I'll make a posting here for the tourneys once I get the dates set.

First beer is on the house if u remind me of this post!

In my mind....Nope.

Here is what we get from a sponsor or host bar for any league that I have played on.

They will open the table about 1 hour before the match and leave it open during league play.

Some bars will reserve the tables around the pool table for the league teams.

Some will provide a new set or reserved set of balls that are used only for league play.

Most will give a team drink to the players.

Very few give or supply any uniforms or team shirts.

Leagues are usually on a dead night so most times we are the only patrons.

I honestly am not swayed by seeing a shirt to make me patronize any place or buy that product. By having the team in your place others will come into it as a visiting team. If you treat them decent, they have a good time and the place is clean and etc they might come if there is something there for them such as cheap drinks, good cheap bar food and etc. Most times players will patronize their own place if at all. Sorry to say most of players on the teams that I have been on never really go into a bar unless it is for league or maybe a pool tournament. Most are cheap, and others are pool bums that don't have a lot of disposable money.

Pretty Awesome!

I just wanted to let you know that I'm actually pretty excited about ya'll opening up. I found your website the other day and it looks like it will be a great asset to the venue once it gets up and running. I personally play at the other 2 locations in Temple right now. It's always nice to have other options with good equipment. Looks like it will be a great attraction for some tourneys to start coming back to Temple too.

As for what would be expected, well it looks like what you are wanting to give some pretty neat perks. I give you props for that definately. It would be a great bonus to have some free table time for practice and the shirts are a great thought too. Crazy that the table time will probably be mostly appreciated by those that actually show up early and take pool more seriously though. LOL

Anyhow, I look forward to finding out a more specific time for the Grand Opening cause I definately know a supply of players that will be there.

Hi TabbyJo! Thanks for the support.

Our place is definitely going to be a notch above the rest here in Temple. 16 diamond tables, full bar, quality furniture and a lounge with a 120" HD TV. It's gonna be nice and it's setup to be a great venue for leagues and tournaments.

We are also gonna open earlier than the other places with a daily special where everyone can practice affordably. $6 per person and the tables will be free play from 2pm to 7pm daily.

Look forward to seeing you there :)

Call the number on our website if you want to chat or have any questions.
