My shaft is around 11.90. I'd like to hear what tip you prefer for your shafts. Right now i've got a Kamui black M on my playing shaft. Problem is mushrooming at the moment. I don't mind a harder tip but what kind of tip do you guys recommend?

Best regards Bob

I've been really happy with my last 2 Tiger Onyx tips (on a Tiger Pro X shaft, which is 11.75mm). For me they are medium and play "just right". They might mushroom once but hold up well after the tip is fully broken in.

With this tip, I have lost my fear of miscuing. I have almost no miscues and there are no other tips I can say that about.

What I also like about the Tiger Onyx is it doesn't seem to harden over time. The last one lasted about 8 months I believe - I replaced it because I started getting a clicking noise but there was still plenty of tip left.

Crown City Corey put my last one on from his fresh batch - it's perfect.

Triangle, that's my choice. I like a 12mm tip myself.

Have you played with the Everest tip, if so how does that compare to the Onyx?

I recently installed a Kamui Black Soft on my Predator Z2 shaft (11.75), found it to be a bit mushy for my taste. Took a few layers off yesterday, so will see if that helps. I hit with a Kamui Black M recently on a 314 shaft and liked the feel of that, seemed pretty hard but yet I still got good action on the ball and none of that dead feel. I'm just always fearful of getting a tip that's too hard and has that clicking sound or doesn't grab at all, that wouldn't suit my game.

Thanks,
Scott

I like Everest's when they're first installed for a month or two, but then they can harden up over time and eventually become firmer than I like. I've noticed that the cues with the short ferrules play firm, so you can really feel a hard tip.

Onyx is not very popular yet - they haven't been marketed much and making them is a slow process, so I expect they will take some time to develop a fan base. I believe that if Tiger gets them out into player's hands, they will develop a good following, especially with shafts that have a short ferrule like the Predator Z, the new Tiger Pro X and LD, the OB Classic and Classic Pro.

The Onyx grips well but there is no feeling of sponginess at all.

Tips are a lot of personal preference. It's ironic that the little tip makes such a huge difference in how much confidence you have putting spin on the ball - it's like the most important thing to get right.

Agree with you for sure.

Sounds like it might be a good fit - not too soft, not too hard, grips well with no sponginess. Will have to try one next time I need a tip.

I like the Everest tips, I've had minimal mushrooming or tip maintenance needed, good balance of hardness/grip. My main complaint with the last 2 I've had was as the tip wears down, well before the end of it's life, the top 1 or 2 layers become smaller and start lifting and eventually breaking off, leaving me with a flat tip requiring reshaping and shortening the life of the tip. That's why I decided just to experiment with something else, which currently is the Kamui Black Soft.

I'm at 11.5 MM and use a Talisman hard tip on my main player at the moment.

I have very few problems with this tip such as miscues. If I miscue, it's generally because I did something wrong and wasn't paying attention to what I was doing during set up/address.

It requires very little maintenance but will slightly get a little mushroomed but not very often. If I do see it start to mushroom, I just reshape it and go about my business.

What I have found is that after reshaping, I ususally need to let the stroke out and hit some very hard shots to get the tip compact again.

I haven't had to re-tip in over 6 months and the last time I reshaped it, it was about 4 months ago.

It still plays just fine as it is lets me maneuver the CB quite well.

I have been playing with a McDermott I-3 shaft (which is 11.75mm tip diameter and European taper) and a Moori soft tip. Surprisingly, I have not experienced any mushrooming. I use 2 cues - one a Schon (which is my favorite) equipped with an I-3 and a McDermott (also equipped with an I-3). Haven't experienced any mushrooming on either shaft. Of course I don't use them for breaking, and I'm a soft hitter. I'll only use more force if I have to move the cue ball quite a bit. I've tried several tips over a couple of years and always go back to the Moori soft. Good luck with your quest for the perfect tip. It's so sujective.

My Z2's came with Everest tips. Not happy. I tried Le Pros's and thought they were too hard or too soft. Quality issues my guess. I now have what ever tip Schon uses. They do need attention now and then but I'm very happy with how they hold up. Keep in mind I'm mostly playing 14/1. 9 ball well make them mushroom faster. I don't break with my player.

Mushrooming 11.75

You may just need to have the sides of the tip properly burnished. The only really good way to do this is on a lathe. Find someone locally that does basic shaft maintenance, have the tip burnished and see if that helps.

I'm at 11.0 and I use a kamui black Hard. Before this tip I had a medium, but I never experienced mushrooming like you. Try and burnish the sides really well with either the fuzzy side of a piece of leather, or a piece of brown paper bag.

I use an OB2 at about 11.70mm with a Kamui Black M. I am pretty satisfied with that combo so far. I have not had any issues yet and the tip is pretty tall. The only other tip I would try right now would be the kamui black hard tip.

I play the Tiger Pro X as well, and I love the Kamui Black Soft on it. Interesting enough I'm the opposite of Tate, as I absolutely hated the Tiger Onyx. I didn't like the Everest either when I had it on my old shaft that was 11.25mm. Just goes to show how much of a personal preference tips really are.

I use Pooldawg8's (here on AZ) pressed EMs on my Z2 shafts. Hard to beat them, especially at the price. Everest is second choice.
