I want to hook up my big screen TV to my laptop with an HDMI cable.

Do I need any drivers or other software to make that happen?

Or just do I just conenct the two and set the TV mode to HDMI?

This is pool related ~ I bought the TAR21 PPV and hope to watch it on my TV instead of only on my laptop.

Thanks !!!!!!!!

connect, set the tv to the HDMI# slot you picked, have fun

but on your laptop you may need to specify that you want video output via HDMI

What kind of video out do you have on your laptop? VGA, DVI, or HDMI? Is it an Apple laptop, then you're dealing with Display Port, Mini-Display Port, and Thunderbolt.

If its HDMI, then a straight cable will work. If its DVI, then you'll just need a DVI/HDMI adapter. If its VGA, then you'll need VGA to HDMI converter box, or VGA to RCA cables. Keep in mind displaying a VGA signal on HD, won't magically make it better than VGA.

Its a Dell Alienware M18x with all the best you can buy from Dell. It has a HDMI port on it.

Thanks :)

No fancy adapter needed, just a HDMI cable. As soon as you hook it up to the TV, Windows should recognize it. You can right click anywhere on your desktop, and bring up display property settings. From there, you can set the TV to either act as a mirror, or a separate screen (screen 1 and 2).

Here is a youtube video on hooking up a computer with hdmi cable to a tv.

^what he said. except he forgot the youtube link :p but you probably won't need it, you can find your way after right clicking on the desktop and going to the properties

Cool. Thanks for the help!!

Russ,

I recently did this and it was easy. Just go to the TV remote input button and set it to the input you are plugging the computer into. If it is the same one as you are currently using for the cable box (i.e. you are just unplugging the HDMI cable from the cable box and plugging it into your computer) then no need to change the input.

One thing you might find (I did) is that the audio doesn't work on the TV - the audio continues to come only out of the computer. I fixed that by simply making all the connections BEFORE turning on the computer. When I did it this way the audio went through the TV along with the video with no problem.

Hope this helps.

Picked up a HDMI cable, hooked it to the puter and the TV and nothing.

Set the mode on the TV.

Right click on the puter doesn't bring up a "Display properties".

Any ideas??

You shouldn't have to do this with a new pc, but look at the F keys, usually F5. There should be a rectangle in blue above the F5 on that key. Press and hold the FN key (next to the CTRL key on the bottom corners of the keyboard) and while holding that down, also press the F5 key for a second or two. That sometimes toggles the screens, but usually isn't necessary on newer machines.

Try this (assuming you are Windows 7)

1. Right Click on desktop
2. Screen resolution
3. Click drop down on 'Multiple displays'
4. Choose 'Extend these displays'
5. Ok
