Will this bandsaw work?

I just bought this saw this weekend for next to nothing, and im just wondering if it will work for making full splice cues? Its an older model, but its pretty solid.

Depends on how much you can tension the blade and how much deflection/drift is in the blade. Blade deflection will also depend on the size of the blade used.

1/2 HP isn't much. After you cut a few pieces of thick stock with it you'll know if you need something with more HP or not. Getting the proper blade will be important, too.
Not sure if the frame on that'll be stiff enough to get a lot of tension on it.
Personally, I think you'll look for a bigger beast.
 
Thanks fellas. I gave $50 for it, so im sure i can get my money back out of it. Any suggestions on what blade i should use? I was gonna google 80 inch bandsaw blade, but im sure there will be a zillion options, lol. I read somewhere that less teeth per inch is better? Is that right?

Joe,

You ought to get Mark Duginske's book "The New Complete Guide to the Band Saw". It's available at Woodcraft or Rockler's or elsewhere I'm sure. It has a lot of good info on bandsaws in general.

Different people like different brands of blades. Timberwolf are very popular here with some guys (that's what I like) Others like other brands.

There are at least 3 different tooth configurations on bandsaw blades. Also the "correct" TPI (teeth per inch) is dependent on the thickness of the stock you are trying to cut. The thicker the stock the fewer TPI.

Get the book, $20.

I have one just like it and could not live without it. I got mine at a yard sale for $40 and spent four times that tuning it up. Would not even consider using it for a full splice.

I'm sure 10 people will jump in and disagree with me though.

Straight from someone who actually builds a full splice blank. I think you've got a winner here.
