Not to bad

Out league takes 10%. and they are always crying. I ran a league for a few years and I wouldnt do it again for 50%. First you get calls all week long about dumb shit. Then you have to have a ton of meetings to get the sponsership fees then you have to have the rules meeting then the sign up meeting then the start day meeting and all this before you even get started.
Then the gas taking the paperwork (which aint cheep) to all the bars, then you need to be availible to settle any questions during the night. then you have to pick up all the money and score sheets (more gas) the enter them into the computer take the money to the bank. the make new stats , settle any issues from the week before and then it starts all over again. then if you have three night a week and 3 nites for darts, for 30 weeks. Give them there $2,900 and be happy you dont have to deal with that B.S

As for money to players thats easy, We had a problem with the top teams sand bagging games in which they already won the round so now we pay out for points. we divide the total number of points scored by every one in the legue and divide that into the prize money . There is no predetermined payout. If you score points you get money. last year I think we paid out .32 cent a point

I ran a league for a year at a local pool hall here. My goal was to have a good league in town so I didn't care about putting money in my own pocket.

The last two seasons 20 weeks each this is how it broke down.

We had 12 teams both seasons and I paid out about $6000 both times with about $400 going to food and trophies.

It was an in house weekly league and all the money paid into the league went back to the league players. I didn't take any cuts and the $6000 paid out went spread out between individuals and teams in the top half.

I honestly don't know why your league is paying out to last place, kinda odd isn't it?

........... I honestly don't know why your league is paying out to last place, kinda odd isn't it?

Then every team gets SOMETHING back. A league I used to play in did the same thing. 100% of all the dues were paid back to the players.
Without turning this into a league-bashing thread, some leagues pay only first place, others pay the top four. Some pay everybody.

The sad part is that when the LO would try to recruit new bars/poolhalls, part of his sales pitch could have been that "even LAST place gets money back".

That's why I did a banquet instead of paying out to last place. The banquet everyone gets to socialize and hang out and eat some good food.

Let's say you pay $10 per week to play for 20 weeks that comes out to $200 right? If I had you 20 - 50 bucks back at the end of the season did you really win anything? But if I give you a smorgasbord full of food and free pool for a night which would you want? I found more players wanted the banquet than the 20 - 50 bucks back.

I guess to each their own though, everyone will have different ideas I am sure.

Your POST is very through, and you number seem fair. I have seen many post about POOR LEAGUE PAYOUTS, most are APA Leagues.

Your League is paying out about 86% if my number were crunched right. That is FAIR.

That payout schedule is pretty great.

I played in an in-house league not too long ago that was $40 per team per week (not counting greens fees and dues to nationals of course). 12 teams. 16 week season. Payouts for 1st 2nd 3rd. 1st place was around $550, 2nd was $400 and 3rd was $150.

Where did the other $6500 go? Well the LO always drove a brand new car. :D

So if your LO pays out anything approaching 75%+, or actually shows up and shows appreciation for their players and teams....damn you are already way ahead of the game! :)

Said this before, but: your specific LO has a lot more to do with how fun/well run (or not) the league is in your area than any nationwide org like APA TAP or whatever.

Oh, I agree. I would prefer a banquet vs $25 at the end of the season.

What boggled me about the league I played in was that they touted to the players already IN the league that "everybody gets money back". That would be a h-e-double hockey stick of a sales pitch.

Like you say, to each thier own.

NO Doubt a good sells pitch!
I wish my league hadn't went bust, cause I think it would have grown pretty big at the rate we were going. Lots of good players were starting to show up and get interested. But anyway that's another story! LOL

hmmm

Not a horrible percentage for the league running it all. Also, not a great number either. 10 to 15 % seems more fair, but overall not that bad. But they do have to pay someone to update every single members score and team scores for the nights, every single week. So that is at least $25 per night. Not sure what else is involved unless the league directors get a little stipend. Doesn't the pool hall get any cut of the proceeds?

biggest complaint I see is it's OK to pay the whole field, but you have to pay a lot less when you finish in the bottom 25%, and the top 25% should be doing a little better. Other that, not to shabby. Trust me, without mentioning any "organziations" at least you guys get a majority of your money back and not some "promise" of a trip to a far away destination...

So 14% for doing what? Sounds about right though. Some take 30% or better.

you have to ralize that this is a traveling league and with 22 teams playing that means he has to go to 11 different locations and pick up the score sheets. he goes over every score sheet and updates the info into his computor, makes up the new score sheets and delivers them to 11 different locations for your next match.

our handicaps are adjusted every week according to the results of your last match. its pretty simple, you win you go up a point, you lose you go down a point.

each week your score sheet gives you the adjusted handicap and your win loss record of every one of your players and your opponents for that week.

remember , this is done weekly for every player on 22 teams and its all posted on your scoresheet including the money you have earned so far.

you can see where all 22 teams are in the standings as of that week.

besides doing that he also takes numerous calls from people *****ing about their handicaps or their opponents. twice this session i have had my opponents captain call the lo complaining about my handicap. both times it was while the match was in progress.

oh and for all of you that mentioned a banquet, i forgot to mention that we have one also.

personally i dont think they make too much money for the amount of work they put into this league.

its one of the few that put every thing out in the open. there aint no guessing where all the money went in this league.

Why is there ALWAYS complaining about what a LEAGUE pays out? Leagues are not meant for financial gain. If someone plays in a league for 20 weeks, and gets back a couple hundred in profit for 1st place....lol. It's a LEAGUE. You want to win money playing pool BET or WIN TOURNAMENTS.

Play in a league for fun, comradery, a night away from the house and kids, some competition, cuz the waitress at your place is HOT, whatever....but it is NOT a money maker for the players. Unless you can consistently field a 8-12 team league where ALL weekly dues go to the winning team, and you are on the team that's SO STACKED that you never lose....good luck keeping the other teams in it.

I play in an ACS/BCA league, and couldn't care less what the payouts are. It's a night out, I enjoy the company of my teammates, and the other teams and places we play are decent too.

I was the president of an in-house 8-ball league for about 10 years that started as a corporate league (picture large airplane manufacturer here in the Seattle area)... no outsiders were allowed to play other than spouses and siblings under the age of 21.

We had two sessions per year... fall/winter and winter/spring. We had 4-person teams. No handicapping. By blind draw each session, each team had an "A", a "B", a "C" and a "D" player. An individual's ranking was based on their overall winning % for as long as they have been league members. Each ranking comprised 25% of the players for that session. Each player on a team played four games each night... one each against all four opposing players.

We paid every team as well... and the Top Ten shooters.. and Most Improved 2nd Year,,, and Most Improved Overall.

We paid back 92% to the members. We had an arrangement with the owner of the bar/room that they would not charge us a green fee. They made money from the alcohol and food purchases.

It was a great league... a VERY low maintenance league. I ran a tight ship and everybody appreciated it.

i hope no one thinks i was complaining about our payout, i was just curious as to how it compared to others.

as to your comment about playing in a league for fun, thats what i do. i play in apa napa and the above money league. i play all of them just for the oppotunity to play pool.

actualy i am thinking about dropining out of my other money team at the end of the session and join a friends apa team that night, after all it is about fun with friends. that team is just too serious for me, they are all about the money.

the info i posted above is from the money league team that i am captain of. i am keeping that team in the money league because we have all been friends for years , yes we want to win but we all know its not the end of the world when anyone on the team has a bad night and we lose. so far we are doing ok with being in 8th place and a good shot at coming in the top 3 in the playoffs if we win this week.

I wasn't specifically speaking to your post. I just know that there will be those moaners and groaners posting about how their league operator, or the league itself is robbing the players...that is what my post was geared towards.

Here is a payout from I think season 4 of the league I was running.
We had 12 teams 3 people each.

We finished up on February 10, 2010. We had two weeks off and last week March 3, 2010 we had our banquet for our prizes and trophies.

1st Place was the Lynch Mob $1200
2nd Place was the Dead Strokers $900
3rd Place was the Paradise Predators $$600
4th Place was the Sharks $300
5th Place was Cutchot $150
6th Place was Whatever $75

In the individual catagories this is how it panned out:

1st Place Averages Bill Mykleby $75
2nd Place Averages Robert Perez $50
3rd Place Averages Robert Schneider $25

1st Place BNR Bill Mykleby $75
2nd Place BNR Robert Schneider $50
3rd Place BNR Hector Benavidez $25

1st Place TR Bill Mykleyby $75
2nd Place TR Rob Schneider $50
3rd Place TR Rene Moreno $25

1st Place 6-0 Bill Mykleby $75
2nd Place 6-0 Robert Perez $50
3rd Place 6-0 Harry Arroyo $25

The 3rd place 6-0 was a three way tie between Harrison Todd, Tai Dang, and Harry Arroyo. We had a playoff to determine the winner, and after they all played each other Harry was the winner of the 3rd Place 6-0.
