The pool scene is so bad in south florida....

daydreaming about pool

I just heard that yet another pool room is closing in south florida. Hollywood Billiards closes tomorrow.

There are millions of people in South Florida and from broward to almost the keys I know of NO weekly pool tournaments. there are a few "its more about drinking than playing pool" rinky dink bar "tournaments"....like race to 1 8ball, done on one or two tables but the last of the pool hall 9ball tournaments dies when Hollywood closes tonight.

Besides just b1tching about the sad sack state of affairs for pool in south florida, I was just curious how pool is doing in other larger cities around the USA. I was telling a friend today that i thought South florida might be the worst large population area for pool in the country. Am I wrong?

DC is pretty weak too...sadly.

We're in a survival mode in Denver, even with all of the increased revenue from $1.00 bottled water.

If you don't like what you got, why don't you change it. At least that's how the song goes.

In my area some industrious minded people have started a facebook page listing tournaments and any and all regional pool news including tournament updates.

They aren't affiliated with any organization, they do it for the love of the game. This page has generated a renewed interest in our region and people are starting to travel to nearby cities for tournaments.

It doesn't take much to get people out, information is key.

Pool seems to be thriving in Texas! Multiple tours, dozens of pool halls, multiple active league systems in place.

Thats the thing...there are any to tell about. I wish I could shout the name of a number of events but sadly it goes like this:

Sharpshooters...use to have a tournament on mondays, then maybe 1x a month...stopped. none now.

New Wave....use to have 4 tournaments a week. now none. word is they are almost out of business

Good times..use to have 3 tournys a week. now none. closed briefly recently but reopened.

New wave north...Closed..use to have tournys 2x a week. After they closed some sort of dispute happened or maybe landlord just wanted tables out. They opened the doors up on saturday morning early and let anyone take anything out. like 15-20 gold crown 3s made legs out the door in one weekend. True story

Bird Bowl...forget it.. havent had a weekly tourny in years and years.

Seriously, I wish there was something for me to say to even create a facebook page. about the only good pool story to report is that APA runs 3 or 4 teams out of a huge strip club called tootsies in north miami. The players there get to go in with no cover and even get reduced drinks on APA nights.

New York City is still doing well, but what about Beyond Billiards in Davie? I spent a summer down there and got action every night, was probably around 2006 though.

Yep there is action there. Its hit or miss though. The corner pocket up in lauderdale has had some action there too. Dippy actually came through and played there recently.

There is action at a few spots still...but you know how that goes...lately everyone wont get up unless they got the nuts. Its ok, im not knocking that, most who gamble at pool are guilty of wanting the best of it, myself included. To me the problem about gambling is that I have to wake up at 6 every day and work 10hrs worth. I like the tournament scene bc its a known start time on a specific day. You can plan on it, unlike money matches.

we had a pool hall close last month but the other 3 left seem to be doing good.

as far as the tournament scene goes.

im not sure about the rack as i hardly ever go there.

i know sharpshooters was holding 2 weekly tournaments , not sure if they still do because i dont go there much anymore.

hi pockets holds 2 weekly 9 ball tournaments. you can pick up a one pocket game bout any night of the week.

several bars have weekly tournaments. most of those are 8 ball race to 2. some blind draw scoth doubles. btw one place has a monthly blind draw scotch double with 500.00 added.

there are probably more i dont know about. i havent kept up much with the tournaments around here lately .

Aside from the quote below, do you have any ideas for other room owners and fans? It's always good to get lots of input so I'd be interested in hearing.

Address or name of said page? I'm at work and the monkeys have a large supply of poo so I can't really cruise through FB right now. (AZ I make time for.)

Naked girls + pool ... It's a trap, and I want in! :D

As far as room owners go, I suggest reasonable rates, good food and drink specials. It doesn't take a lot for a room owner to approach a regular to run a weekly tournament, free entry for the tournament director along with matching entry fees or money added help bring people in. I've seen reward cards work well some places

sorry no naked girls. Oh wait, you can get naked girls and FREE POOL in Calgary with the purchase of a beverages at that place by 2 blocks east chinook mall on Centre street.

Metairie, Louisiana

Buffalo Billiards in Metairie seems to be going strong. Not so good for other pool rooms in the area. They seem to be languishing.

Two weekly FREE pool tournaments seem to attract the wannabees and players alike. Action pretty much available all of the time. No one getting rich but still a fun pool room. Lost $60 in a ring game last night. Eddie Brown played like a chump.

What's reasonable? Down here in bible country it's $10/hr for 2+ players. I had our local hall's owner peruse through the Room Owner forum while we were discussing membership options.

Roadtrip!

I'd hate to call $10/hr reasonable, but these days it's about average. There are different membership options I've put some thought into:
  • monthly fees
  • punch cards - get 1 hour free for every 5 hours
  • Private club with an annual membership fee along with initial share purchase
  • Time shares - I know it's a stretch, but some people play the same amount of time the same time every week

wow. hollywood is closing. i lived in s.f. for about 15 years and that was the one place you could rely on for good play. it was pretty much a guarantee for action. that sucks. beyond in davie is ok. it was my home spot for a while. i can remember in the the mid 90's there were five decent rooms to play in (maybe not for action but to play and some had tournaments) between stirling rd in davie and royal palm in coral springs all on university dr. you had beyond (stirling) and then gatsby's at 595/ sr 84, hot shots on oakland park and there was one about a half mile up from hot shots (can't remember the name) and then a room at royal palm that had several different names.
now on to another post you made. apa.....at tootsies:shocked2: only thing better would be tables in scarlets in hallandale. better talent at scarlets (at least when i lived there).
