These matches are going to be shown live on tv in Asia and streamed everywhere in the world. So that's probably the time limit for what they can show w/o much if any editing. The big thing for pool in these matches will have online betting on them and that is huge for pool in a mainstream way. A lot of people like to bet on sports/games and will watch the live shows to watch their money.
The powers that be have been trying to get the gambling out of pool for 50+ years when that was it's big selling point all along. Most likely 5 guys sitting around a table in a locked room. All 5 had been hustled/beat for money when they were younger. One of them said, "Lets try and make it where there is no gambling on pool." The rest say, " I'll 2nd that."

I actual have a problem with the pros betting on their own matches if there are going to be betting lines and online gambling going on.... I think the rail betting is fine but you are definitely opening up pandora's box if they allow the players to actually make wagers.... Vegas learned that lesson and pool has paid the price for going on 30 years now as far as I am concerned....

I don't believe any of the players in these matches will legally be able to bet on themselves. I read the words "banned for life" somewhere about these matches. Johnnyt
This match is a coin flip, in effect we are seeing the mighty battle between the two champions, heads vs tails! Who will win???
We need to start to move this sport to being more of a reflection of the skill of the players. When people throw $7500 at a match like this and it is a race to 9 on a 9 foot diamond pro-am I almost want to cry. If you are going to make the races that short then put these guys on a table with the Fatboy rails and lets see how good Dennis and Ralf are... I already know what these two can and will do on a 9-foot pro-am diamond, I have already seen that show many times...
I want to see these guys and their peers playing on equipment that actually tests their skills in something beyond a successful break. I want to NOT see a match where a guy breaks, makes a ball on the break, and the announcers say "well there is no problems here, pretty much a given he is gonna run out". Great sport when announcers start saying that before the first shot after the break, but how often do we hear it? And low and behold, most of the time they are right...
This type of challenge match format is the ideal ground for one of the upcomming 10 foot Diamond tables with Fatboy rail sized pockets. Do that and then when you call it a "challenge" match you are not kidding. But seriously why does anyone care to see Dennis and Ralf play yet another short set on a 9-foot table with standard pockets? We all know exactly how they shoot on the things, we KNOW it wont prove anything, what is it going to accomplish other then giving each player abit of a payday and seeing a few more standard 10-ball runouts just like all the ones we have seen before?
It is past due to the professional pool game to change to professional calibre equipment and start to finally see who is who.

As it should be... opening up the sport to online gambling is about the only hope I have left for pro pool aside from maybe me winning the lottery Wednesday =)
Celtic think about it this way... short races means you can have upsets and you can bet with your heart... You are gambling..... A long race really wouldn't be any different from the gambling aspect as the underdog would have a magic number to get to he wouldn't have to win.... The odds and lines are there to make the matches even money... Short races go a long way towards that.....

As far as the proffesional game goes I don't want to see gambling, I want to watch a sport where the best normally wins. The idea that making a match between two proffesionals into a coin flip and have that being a good thing makes no sense to me.
I would like to finally find out who is the best pool player in the world between SVB, Wu, Yang, Orcullo, Ralph, Appleton, and a handful of other players. Right now I have no clue who is the best amoung the top players and noone else does either, people have opinions but unlike tennis which is a sport that sees the rise of a guy like Federer or Sampras to a clear spot at #1, unlike golf where Tiger was certainly for a significant time THE best player in the world, unlike a great many sports pool has this group at the top of many players and the sport itself does NOTHING to let us know who is the best amoung them.
Something has got to change in this sport in a big way, as much of a fan of the game as I am I am getting really bored 20 years after starting to watch and play it and the pro game is just a revolving door of players of the week. I honestly think if this game does not take the innitiative and change stuff in a big way at the pro ranks, a major paradigm shift to far tougher equipement with 4 inch pockets and possibly even moving to the 10 footers that are being brought out for a trial run soon, this sport is going to go nowhere in my entire lifetime. I am 35 now and from what I have seen in the last 20 years I could very well die of old age with NOTHING changing in this sport and that is unbelievably sad.
I actually though the same thing when I read the news item. Big Challenge match, itty-bitty race to 9. Eh?
