A very informative video from Mike Page's "Fargo Billiards" You Tube series on squirt effects of forward weight was demonstrated vividly by attaching weight just behind the ferrule and comparing hits with spin as they squirt from a line of reference. This demonstration, though extreme, caused me to inquire about the point on a cue that begins to accentuate this effect. Am I to think the balance point is relative? does the shaft weight come into play?
 
Nobody puts weight behind the ferrule.
Weights in the butt have nothing to do with squirt.
 
Before I saw the video, I had through reading and talking to others about squirt, became aware to a degree about it and its effect on my game. At the time I was using an early 70's Viking with an 11.5 mm original shaft. I recently bought a Joss cue and added a 314-2 that took a bit to get used too. That experience lead me to search out info on the subject, which in turn led to my post.

I didn't want to sound argumentative.
Btw, I forgot, Viking used to have screw on ferrules which added a ton of weight up front.
If you add weight below the ferrule, the weight will cause the cueball to squirt more.
IF you make it hollow, it will have less squirt ( like 314-2 ).

Joey has it right. What causes cue ball squirt is primarily the difference between the mass of the cue ball and the mass of the tip end of the cue shaft. The more tip end mass, the more cue ball squirt.


Some low deflection or low squirt cue shafts just use lighter materials for the ferrule, and go so far as to reduce the length of the ferrule to lessen the tip end mass. These steps do reduce the cue ball squirt, but just not very much.

Our cue shafts have very low tip end mass, and very low cue ball squirt. We get there by using a combination of materials in a unique design that allows us to keep the tip end mass down and still have the strength needed to perform well and hold up. We do not have an empty hole in the end of our cue shaft.

From what I'm gathering, it would seem this effect develops intrinsically at the tip and that makes me think weight distribution, say from the ferrule back, is not that impactful in this regard. Thank you all !
