I'm a Happy camper now!

I very rarely post on AZ because I don't want to get in the middle of things, especially politics. LOL! I having been playing pool forever but I am still a student of the game and have a whole lot to learn. I have played on every single table made and have never found the perfect 9' table... until now! I bought my cherry three piece Diamond table in 1993 from Greg and play on it a lot. My friend bought a ProAm Diamond a few years back and of course it plays much better than my table. I thought it was always because of the three piece slate vs. one piece slate… but of course I was wrong… and yes I have the latest level cushions. I was envious and considered buying a new table, but I was told by someone I trust that there was one person on this planet who could make my table play better than my friend’s table. I was skeptical, but I thought I would give it a try. I finally got in contact with a fellow named Glenn Hancock (Mechanic Extraordinaire - you can reach him at 702-927-5689) and he said, “I guarantee I can make your table play at least as good as your friend’s table… and I will be in your area for a few weeks in the near future.” I thought this fellow was just another mechanic with a very big ego and trying to get me to lay out a bunch of cash for another re-cloth job. Boy was I wrong! When Glen showed up at my home, he threw the QB around the rails and hit a few balls and said, “On a scale of 1-10, your table is a 3… I can make it a 9+” I said, “Why not a 10?” He said, “Only because your cherry rail tops are dinged up. If they were ironwood your table would become an 11. It will play like an 11 when I am done!” I said, “How in hell are you going to make my table play like a 10 or better by just changing the cloth?” Glenn said, “If that’s what you think I am going to do, you are way off base. I am here to recalibrate (rebuild for us novices) your table. If you want someone to recover your cloth, go and get any so-called mechanic. You don’t need me.”

Here’s the scoop: I gave Glenn the go-ahead (he’s not cheap) and he tore my table apart, sawed the rails off and completely rebuilt them to his demanding specs. He was here working on the project from Thursday to Wednesday. I watched him occasionally using his micrometer and special jigs. His precision was from another planet. While most people talk about rail height in 16ths of an inch, Glenn thinks in 64ths of an inch. He worked like a brain surgeon every step of the way. He is a true artist at his craft and he really enjoys it. The coup de gras was when I watched Glenn finally putting on my new Simonis HR. No staples, special 3M glue only! I couldn’t believe my eyes… he stretched the cloth so tight I thought he would rip the cloth. I was blown away. He also did his magic with deadening the sound the balls make when they drop into the ProSpec pockets.

The bottom line: I am absolutely positive this is NOW the best table I have ever played on… bar none! The cushions play perfectly… they are not bouncy and every rail plays true. The speed is perfect, the pockets are tough and the table plays dead silent. After the new cloth wears in, the play will really be great. All I can say is “Thanks Glenn… I can’t believe what you have done to my table! BTW, I had a hard time getting away from the table long enough to write this post.”

Thank you very much Phil, it was a real treat to work on your table...as bad as it played before hand after the butcher of Ziear worked on it last...LOL As it turns out, I should have worked on Ward Hodges Diamond first, then yours, that way I'd have had two happy customers. But, I can't change the past, it is what it is. Glad you like playing on it though, it WAS a job, but thanks to you and your sweet wife Kathy being able to take showers at the end of the day was priceless. And I checked just to make sure...no dogs caught a ride in my truck as I was leaving...LOL

It seems that King Cobra always gets rave reviews from his clients. He's gotta be good...
for those that I can get to that is. Sometimes I have way to much on my plate to handle, in fact I'm thinking about taking 6-12 months off working on tables after I get done with the work I have to get done down in TX, haven't had a break from this line of work in years, think I"m going to go fishing up in Washington State for a while and just kick back a little.

Glen,

All i've ever heard about your work is "it's the best" and if I ever get a place with enough room for a 9' table you will be getting a call from me. Your reputation is stellar.

James

Thanks for the wright up Phil and I hope to be in your area one day so we can hit a few balls on your updated Diamond table. (I met you at the US Open this year.)

Hi James, we sure had a great time at the open. If you are in the area come out and hit a few with me.. you will love the way my table plays. BTW, is that your two Searings in your avatar? I have to get one of his cues someday. Dennis is another high quality guy. I recently was in touch with Dennis and he says I will be finally on his short list by the year 2013. I had placed my order in March 2003. LOL!

Thank you, but I'm not really the best, my work is about tied with Mark Gregory's, he's a hell of a table mechanic too, I just get to some of the jobs before Mark does because I travel, whereas he don't....because his house don't have tires...LOL

Thanks for fixing the tables at bull and bones in Blacksburg va also Glen!

I didn't get to re-calibrate the rails on the 7ft Smart Tables there, but I did get a chance to do the 9ft Smart Table, world of difference in how it plays now, maybe next time I'll get to redo the 7fts as well. I'll tell you what, the Diamond tables are so far ahead of the competition it's a joke. They'll NEVER be outdated like the Valley tables are, or keep changing models like the Brunswick Gold Crowns, that's one of the reasons I like working on the Diamonds so much, not that I can't work on all tables, but the Diamonds are for sure my favorite. I'd have to admit though, I really like working on the Brunswicks because there's a whole lot more that has to be done to them work wise in order to fix them up to play right, so they're a little more fun to work on, as there's a lot more that goes into them to get them to play right. Maybe in another 20 years or so the Diamonds will be that fun to work on too, as the more the rails get hacked up, the more challenging they are to work on...LOL

I saw the 9 footer apart i think it was last week and hoped you were working on that one also. The 7ft play better than they did before ......the banks are better. I was hoping to catch you there and say hi to a fellow azer. When they said they hired the best diamond guy I knew it had to be you:wink:

I'm glad to hear that you are happy with your table, Phil! I hope to play on it again someday (with you giving me a little weight of course).

Easy!... It's good to hear from you again. We miss you here. When you coming back into town? Love to have you come out and shoot a little. You will be very impressed with the way my table plays now. Wow! It's like I died and went to pool heaven.

How is Kerry and the baby doing? Send me a PM.

BTW, as far as weight goes, I put on about 10lb. over Thanksgiving. LOL! Oh... and I still can't shoot a combination shot to save my life. LOL!

Do you ever make it to Baltimore?

I do, but it has a lot to do with how much spare time I have to work on a table on the side, but I'll be passing through Baltimore shortly on my way back from Canada. Send me a PM as to what you're interested in doing.

Glen

Glen does awesome work. He posted about the work he did on my table and after over a year of playing on it, it still plays lights out. I would highly recommend him

Here are two pics for you, they show my rails and pockets before Glenn did his magic. Notice all the staples, Ughhhhh! As you will see, they are not necessary.

Glenn sawed off all the unfinished wood that a6ttaches to the cushion.
