Where to get a 6 foot dovetail?

Anyone know who sells a 6 foot steel or hard anodized dovetail for the Taig style lathes? One of my Hightower lathes could use a fresh bed and Chris wont have any for a couple of months.

I sent Todd and Customcuelathe an email but haven't heard back yet, any other sources?

A 6ft section is hard to find. I was looking for one a while back. Only Geoff said he could make them and i'm not trusting that source anymore after that fiasco.

Heard from Todd, he cant get them. I also contacted Geoff and he said he isnt making them.

Any other places?

Have you tried a local machine shop with a CNC Mill? They should be able to make you one from solid stock. All they need are the deminsions and the dove tail angle from your current peice and then how much you want to tighten it up I would think. I have some friends that would prolly do it for you. I would have to find their number if you want to pursue. They are in MO.

Sorry I've been gone since Wed, and I just got back in town. Thanks for the recommendations guys but I only use 4 foot sections so that is the only way I have them made.

Try giving Bassel a call instead. I just recieved a 5' Hard anodized dovetail from him last week. I believe he said he had some 6 footers too.

NO surprise that Geoff flaked there. Didn't he say the materials were on there way a long time ago?

As far as having a local shop do it, I THINK it would be cost prohibitive. Also, 60 inches is ALOT of travel. Of course there is a way around that, but many machine shops don't like doing one offs and if they do will charge accordingly.

Is there any reason you can't use 2 four footers and bolt them to a piece of plate? Of course then there is the added cost of plate and cutting one of the beds..

I need to finish rewiring my shop(I finally feel well enough to get back in there and do a bit) I'll try and fill some of these niche needs.

The first thing is making a bed for my Sherline stuff(that has been sitting FOREVER) out of this 60 inch piece of alumaplate(that has also been sitting here FOREVER).

I do have dovetails, but I do not have complete beds for sale, nor do I have the holes drilled and tapped in the dovetail beds. Another note is that the dovetail's hole pattern changed when I changed machinists a few years ago. So if you have an older machine you might want to drill and tap your own holes using your old bed as a drill guide. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

jmo

if you can try to work with chris hightower on this deal, i bought a dovetail from another source and the anodize wore off within a month, i have never had this problem with any of the hightower lathes i have owned.
