Improve Mosconi Cup: Europe Vs Asia

Since the US looks like they are no longer a pool powerhouse, perhapse it would be better pool to see Mosconi Cup disputed between Europe and Asia, all world class players - perhapse:

RALPH
Niels
Meling

Yang
Alex

It would be a wake-up call if Matchroom ever did this. No worries they never will.
 
I would do asia/europe/us. Whoever hosts the event gets the bye. i.e. next year its in england. US plays asia, winner plays europe. next year in asia; asia gets the bye. you get the idea.

I think youre jumping the gun here a little bit buddy. They lost two in a row this is not the end of the world.

That'd be a great matchup, I suspect this thread will generate some good debate as to who'd win this hypothetical match-up.

But... Let them start their own Cup. The US ain't dead yet. :cool:
 
I'm not interested in the Mosconi cup (just an attempt to copy golf's Ryder's cup and I don't care for that or any team pool), but golf does have a President's cup that allows selection from other countries.

Why don't they have an event where the winner of the Mosconi cup takes on a world's team. Who would select the players I don't know.

I suspect there would be more politicking than the upcoming election.
 
Wow, I'd love to see the match you propose.

Still, I think Orcullo is the best player in the world, so I'm quite sure that he's among the five best in Asia. Also, with due respect to Melling, whose play was simply incredible at the Mosconi Cup, I'd go with a European team of:

Souquet
Appleton
Feijen
Immonen
Hohmann

My team Asia would be:

Orcullo
Yang
Wu
Pagulayan
Alcano

Five world beaters against five world beaters. Ooooooh, that would be nice!

Save me a front row seat please.

Of course, you couldn't call it the Mosconi Cup but how about if we call it the Reyes Cup?

I remember back in '93, brothers Jose "Popit" and Aristeo "Putch" Puyat thought of a way to bring a bunch of well-known American pros to play in the Philippines. Pool was so huge back there (and it's still is I believe) that anything related to pool on TV, an 80% audience share is almost a guarantee. The Puyat brothers created the World Team Billiards Challenge to showcase some of the top pool players at that time. The Americans' airfare, including their accommodations throughout the duration of the tournament, are all paid for by the Puyats, and these brothers are well known to "shower" you with $$$ as a show of their gratitude. You can ask any American/foreigner who's been there, and have participated in any of the Puyat sanctioned and funded invitational pool tournaments back in the days, there's always this "under the table" just for showing up.

Team America paraded Kim Davenport, Johnny Archer, Mike Sigel, Nick Varner, Jim Rempe and Mike Lebron as the non-playing team captain, while their Filipino counterparts were Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Jose "Amang" Parica, Leonardo "Dodong Dadiangas" Andam, Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat, and Rolando "Boy" Vicente as the non-playing team captain.

A year after, Mosconi Cup was born, and the Philippines/Asia was out of the loop...

I love the idea. But the language barrier between the Taiwanese and the Pinoys would be tough to overcome. Also, having lived in Asia, I doubt they will be able to generate as much pride in their continent or country as the Europeans or the Americans.

However, I think Team Philippines and Team Taiwan would do quite well on their own. And in that setting they would be able to form the team spirit needed. So that leaves us with 4 teams.

Convince Matchroom to put up some dough and create a World Pool League where each team plays the other three teams twice, once at home, once away. Score it like a soccer league with points for the winner, matches won/lost, and racks won/lost. If teams are tied for points at the end of the season, matches won/lost determine the winner, if tied racks won/lost determine the winner.

At the beginning of each season choose 10 players from each team, making them eligible to play. Team Captain has to choose 5 from this pool of players before each of the 6 events. Keep the Mosconi Cup format, only shorten it to 3 days.

Bigger prizefunds:
so the bookies feel safer making odds and taking big wagers, also to keep the players fighting till the last matchday because they can still earn money even if they are not able to win the league for that season
TV coverage for each country mandatory.

There it is, somebody willing to implement this and spend 5 million will save pool. j/k (well, not really)
 
Matchroom already does this. It's called the World Cup of Pool. A few years ago the washed up pool pros from the wasteland of America won it against all the other teams from around the world.

if you read what i wrote without desperately trying to look for an opening, where the same sht you already said in other threads would fit. You would know that it doesnt have anything to do with the World Cup of Pool.

Great idea, and I'm sure it would be a big TV hit in the Philippines, Taiwan, and probably Europe too, translating to bigger cash prizes and cuts from pool related product sponsors and advertisers, but for the team USA? Not so much I believe...

The Mosconi Cup was originally designed to bring a higher awareness of pool in the US and UK. And in that it has been successful. And will continue to be successful.

If someone would like to start a "Cup" tournament between Europe and Asia, that would be great. But I think it's the same old story: "I know what needs to be done but I want someone else to do it."

Yeah maybe not. Two washed up pros from America just took second place in China in a mixed doubles team competition against 32 teams from around the world. The Americans just don't have what it takes anymore, they are all done for, can't win anything anymore. It's a wonder that they can even lift their cues.

So since America is so far gone I will be taking the underdogs with big odds if such a competition happens. What are you all willing to give up to get me to bet on these washed up terrible players?

JB, your blind fanaticism is clouding your eyes and your brain, you can't even think straight and comprehend anymore. I wasn't knocking the American players, but the support, or the total lack of it from sponsors and advertisers. Pool on TV are just fillers for ESPN. If there's some sort of a sports lull or a basketball/football/baseball lockout, that's the time we get to see our pool. It's totally different in the Philippines and Taiwan, and to some extent, Europe too. Huge TV ratings means more $$$ for everybody.

... and where's the part that I said the Americans are out of it? You are a very sad, sad man, man...

please get off of this subject. that is like asking the mlb to put teams from asia in the world series since the Yankees did not win this year.

make it a different event if you want but leave current ones alone. :wink:
