DIY joint repair

A fellow brought me a laminated shaft and asked if I could repair the delam happening near the joint. Upon inspection the radial jointed shaft looked well bulged out for about 4in from the joint collar and the laminations were indeed separating. I asked what he thinks caused this and he told me that the shaft was loose fitiing so he filled it with water and left it overnight.
I declined to attempt the repair :thumbup:

My partner Ray had a black phenolic shaft insert installed in a shaft and inadvertently used the none ground drill tap to the bottom and the pin fit was not as tight as our specs. called for.

Instead of drilling out the insert and redoing it he got the idea to put some water in there with the hopes of swelling the minor .003.


Bad Idea!!!

He did not even let it sit in there all night but just a few minutes, then whipped it out. The next morning the expansion split the shaft. Lesson Learned and passed along to anyone who wants to put that in their memory bank.

I used to seal threads often for a better fit although now I do it a completely different way. I will say that the use of water for swelling is a lesson in futility. Just as the addition of water expands and tightens the threads as it dries they shrink and become loose again. I used to use liquid car wax. It has some solids in it's mixture so that as the moisture dried out the solids are left behind in the wood making for a much longer repair. This repair, just like the use of water, will crack the shaft but much more readily. To use wax you put some in the threaded hole, shake the shaft so as to spread the wax around and then after one minute, take the shaft by the tip end and sling as much of the wax out as you possibly can. When you can no longer sling anything out, you then blow out, and dry out what's left. This will make for a much longer lasting repair.

The correct and much safer way although it takes longer to repair the threads is to bore the hole to .500, install a wood or other material of your choice plug and then install completely new threads.
