Shaft MM help??? How to measure

I also measure at the end of the ferrule because a slightly mushroomed tip could interfere with the measurement.

You said shaft, so measure the shaft. It can be different from the ferrule especially if somebody has been abusing the shaft with abrasives. So I generally check it in several places.
When measuring for a tip I just measure the end of the ferrule. I usually take three measurements to allow for brain farts, human error, and the ever present gremlins......the old measure twice cut once idea....but I measure three times..... But of course the easiest is to just put the tip up to the ferrule and see if it's big enough. :wink:
If it's for specs for selling etc, I measure in at least three places on the ferrule.

FYI as an example in practical application I just measured a tip I put on. The ferrule is at 13.25mm and the tip is at about 13.26-13.27mm. I am about to burnish the edge down so it should come out perfect I think. This is all done "by hand" by the way, no lathe.
Both the tip and the ferrule were averaged from three measurements.
Caught me at a good time....I am just doing this in my office in front of my computer while I watch the forum.
I actually don't like giving a range for the tip, but I am just a hack putting on at tip with hand tools.....so cut me some slack. IMHO when I am done you can't tell it from lathe work. :wink: But it takes a long time and your fingers will HURT!

I use the calipers and measure the ferrule just below the tip and call it a day!
