Steve Lomax Cues (they're not just jump cues)

I'm writing this because I like to recognize people who stretch themselves and come into their own.

Steve Lomax has been around the cue making business quite some time now. He is actually from my neck of the woods; Louisiana and I have known him for more than a decade.

I attended an annual tournament in Mobile, AL last year at Breaker's Billiards and was playing in the tournament and had a break in the between matches and wandered over to Steve's repair booth and looked at some of his cues, which were stunning for the price range he placed them in. Looks doesn't really do it for me, at least as far as a cue is concerned. I am more interested in playability than anything else.

Steve suggested I try out a couple of his cues and I did. I immediately noticed that it was "easier" to play simple shots with his cue on the bar tables and that I could move the cue ball in a consistent manner, especially on straight in shots where I might want to stun the cue ball with power. Since I have been trying to learn how to play on bar tables in recent months, I thought it might be nice to have a shaft for my POW-MIA cue and asked Steve if he could build one identical to what I currently had and he said he could. I told him I wanted the shaft to play exactly like the cue that I had tested and he said no problem. I sent Steve an old shaft that had been whittle down over time and was too narrow to use anylonger and he removed the old collar and placed it on one of his new shafts.

I receive the shaft a couple months back and have been playing with it ever since. I now use it on ALL TABLES. It is an excellent playing shaft and I like it well enough that I am ordering another to match.

My son is taking up pool and I think I want him to meet Steve so that he can discuss having Steve design a unique one of a kind cue. My son is kind of an amateur archeologists of sorts, specializing in the recovery of very ancient, native American Indian artifacts from the swamps of Louisiana and has some ideas that he can discuss with Steve.

I have no doubt that Steve can build my son the cue of his dreams and that it will play well. If you have a chance you should check out Lomax for cues that are exceptional playing works of art. He's moving up in the cue making world for sure.

I have a good story. one morning I wake up go straight to dentist and have a root canal done. After all the drilling and filing, I drove 2 1/2 hours from Richmond to DC to meet my ride to the Ohio Seminole event then realizing I left my cues at home on accident. Too late to turn around and noone can mail them too me.
I still go to the tourney expecting to borrow a cue. Next thing you know, Larry Nevel lends me one of his Lomax cues. Never had I hit a ball with one and I ended up having a decent finish. I beat Ike runnels, J Schmidt, J klatt and a couple other guys. then lost to archer hill hill then lose to Pagulyan 9-5 end up placing 5th or 7th. All that with a foreign cue, i think I can def give alot of kudos to Steve lomax. What an excellent cue he makes. Now I know sometimes its Less about the arrow and more the Indian but in this particular case I haven't ever felt that comfy w a cue after 20 min with it. Rock on Steve Lomax!!

Cue

Joey, I happen to like Southwestern looking cues, and some Indian lore inlayed in the cue. Your son might like something like this for his cue.

It's itching my OCD

I have a great Lomax jump cue ,and a sweet Lomax break cue .All that's missing is a playing cue .Not only does Steve make a great cue ,he is easy to communicate with about what you want .I think this is a VERY under rated quality in a cue maker .Steve has probably saved me $100's in tips alone in the past 2.5 yrs .I was doing what I thought was "tip maintenance" but Steve gave me a little advice about it and I have been using the same Kamui tip for about 2.5 yrs now .:thumbup:Hopefully I will be out to Steve's shop in the next week or so getting a tv issue resolved and puttin in an order for a player.

You forgot to mention that Steve is a great guy as well as a great cue maker!

Hello Matt90, how goes it? When are you coming to NOLA? Steve is the man in the real world! Take care! I thought you were missing in action!
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

I have owned Steve's cues, and will probably own more in the future. Great cues, great guy.

I have a complete matching set of Lomax cues (break, jump, player, and a 76" for avoiding the bridge on some shots). There is nothing better than having a great looking set of cues that play as great as they look. LOMAX IS THE CUE MAN!!!

His cues play great!! I really don't see how a cue could play any better.
He's getting ready to build my 3rd set, right Steve, lol.Yes, his jump cues play awesome but so does his players.John B.

Where can I see more about Indian lore, especially used in cues? Links please.

Joey, Steve is building a cue for me now. I picked out the woods , described what I need and the design. It's in the finishing stages now. I can't wait !! I have heard for several top players about his cues..nothing but good things.

It's African Olivewood, with a segmented Curly Maple and Ebony Handle Black and silver joints and ringwork and butt plate. It will be one of a kind..

That sounds like a beautiful cue in the making! Let's see the pics when it is complete.

Do you have any photos of cues with Indian lore, symbols etc inlayed into a cue? Do you know any specific cuemakers that have made such?
thanks,
