How do the PROS aim?

Dear John, sir,

You have committed a grievous error..As I admitted to your role model, (JoeyA) thousands of A.S.S. posts ago...I am now commited to a sure fire "Aiming System", and I am just thrilled with it...Don't know how I could have been so blind, for so long.

Thank you both so much for your perserverance. I have finally seen the light, and will now be an A.S.S.[sic] forever...Please, Let me share it with everyone again...

After a short tryout, I reverted back to my sure-fire PIITH system..(kept breaking my protractor)

SJDuck-A.S.S. (formerly ANTI-A.S.S.)

PS..Thanks again John and Joey, forever in your debt..:)

Let this be a lesson to all of you old dudes out there! If Dick can make the transition, you can too. Shoot, maybe even the young dudes will take a clue from Dick.

Way to go Dick. You still got it. You should could help a lot of people with their pool game like Geno of PERFECT AIM.

I guess I made that transition long time ago myself. Did not realize I was using the PIITH aiming system for the last 50+ years! It REALLY works...and it can work for you too!

You and Dick are a match! :D

Me, I'm going to continue to learn how other aiming systems help other people to aim better and how they help them play better.

Maybe if you spent more time "putting it in the hole' rather than studying the next new miracle aiming system YOU could play better too!

I am very much an advocate of aiming systems ever since I spent time with Tom Simpson and Joe Tucker. The only issue is that most systems work real well for centre ball hits only, once we get away from the center things change as we all know. You can still use the systems with english but it requires a lot of additional learning and practice - I am getting there.

I use it all the time (not a professional but a SS).

Just my 2 cents!

Tom Simpson is teaching, with Hal's blessing, three different Hal Houle systems.

Joe Tucker created Aiming With Numbers balls to aid with parallel aim/cue ball contact point to object ball contact point.

Great thread, just one caveat, some pros say or teach one thing and do another. I'm not thinking of "secret aim systems," I'm thinking of putting what they do in simpler terms for the public. There's a video getting a lot of hits on YouTube recently, where Willie Mosconi shows contact point work without explaining that he actually uses parallel aim. Just a two-minute video but an example of someone not wanting to burden people with more details.... as well as the fact that Willie knew plenty of non-parallel people shoot well.

He doesn't describe any aiming method - just states the universal fact that the cue ball has to hit the OB contact point.

Robb Saez

You can add my buddy Robb Saez.

About a year ago, he confessed to me that he does not know how he aims and can't explain it.

Watch out. Aiming thread in the wrong section. Prepare for haters. Moderation will soon follow

I watched him play last night on the Turning Stone stream. If he can teach his aiming and shooting, it's would be a miracle. Him and Bustamante, by all accounts, should not be able to make a ball shooting the way they do. Saez aims his practice strokes low left, then swipes to where he wants to hit on the final stoke when he hits the cue ball.

You can probably add McCready to the list of players that really should be playing at a C level with their strokes. Except they don't.:eek:

elvicash, this thread was started before the new aiming sub forum, it may be grandfathered in hehe.

Aiming your "pool rifle"...have you found your "sights"

Here's what 12 pros say about aiming: Aiming, The Secret of Pool? or Basic Instinct...
Notice most of them play by instinct or ghost ball variations. Earl Strickland even says, ""I've played so much that I don't have to think about it." <--- That's the way it should be! Practice aiming so you don't have to think about it during match play. Doesn't really matter which method you use during practise...so long as it works for YOU! If you think there is a "secret" method that will work for you without practise...you're wrong!
I like what Pro Nikki Benish said "...when you're a professional, every shot you see, you've seen and shot at least a hundred times before." THAT'S why we practise!

I agree that at some point all the aiming needs to be done unconsciously....and at the end of the day (and many discussions) aiming a pool shot is most similar to aiming a RIFLE....I believe after reading all of your points and questions in this forum that the main question should be NOT how we pros aim, but, instead, what are our "SIGHTS" and "How do we {consistently} line our Body & Eyes from the Cue Ball to the Object Ball"?....when you start to understand the answers to THESE questions you will be very close to doing it yourself....until then, you're going to be free to ponder 40 different "aiming systems".....and trying to understand if they "work" or don't "work"....in the mean time ask yourself this question: "How much more effective is my ball pocketing ability?" .....and "What are my 'sights' that I'm currently using?"

Great Post. I recently made a stance and pre-shot routine change that allows my sighting to be more consistent during the transition from the standing to shooting position. My shot making consistency has gone way up.
