APA skill level question

The travel fee is the extra $4 your paying! Someone just told me it's $25 here now too!

re; league fees in my area

apa
8 ball travel 6.00 , no travel fee whatever that is ?
scotch doubles 6.00
double jeapordy 4.50 per match, if you play both 8 ball and 9 ball that night = 9.00
25.00 yearly fee

napa league
double jeapordy 6.00 per match, 12.00 if you play both games
no yearly fee

memphis pool league; money league
8 ball travel 6.00
100.00 team fee each session; sponser pays, usually the bar or pool hall you play out of

i think they all are pretty reasonable

i have educated my team on the importance of accurate scorekeeping. as for safties i told them when in doubt..ASK IF IT WAS A SAFTEY OR NOT !

It's a judgement call on safety's. Your team and theirs does not have to match exactly. If you think it was a safe, mark it. The other team may lie to you.

"i think they all are pretty reasonable" with one exception! In APA your team could be undefeated and lead the league all season...and NOT receive a dime in payouts! In fact, you could even lose your 1st place standing to a "wild card" team because of a single bad night in playoffs! At least the other leagues here pay per win!

You could educate YOUR team all you want but you can never eliminate sandbagging in a system that encourages it! In 30 years I have yet to see a change in sandbagging! However, I have seen more clever sandbaggers! Like I said, if the system worked...why would they need the 23-rule?

The "travel" fee is what the league operator charges to recoup expenses for sending a team to Las Vegas.

And we all know it. It isn't some hidden conspiracy. Many of us like playing in APA.

And many of us do get payouts in the playoffs, it depends on how the particular LO runs it. We have gone down this road many times here in the past, must we do so again?

Don't like APA, don't play it. Simple.

For the most part I like APA. My team always has a good time. That is important.
My only complaint is with the league putting players up in ranking at times that really hurt a team.
Vegas is not where someone should go up. By the time they get there there was plenty of time for that to happen.
Somebody is going to win. Some team is going to stay hot and win. Let the teams play.
There is no reason to possibly have your best, highest SL player not be allowed to participate in Vegas.
I can tell you that if it ever happened to me, I'd probably get arrested.
Why waste my time and money to travel all the way there to possibly shoot 1 match, and then be put out because someone puts a 3 to a 4.
I'd probably hit somebody.:frown:

The other leagues that I have played in don't pay out $4000 for first and $4000 for second place either. I don't have much of a problem with their
payouts. I really enjoy the league and have met lots of good people through it.

So the Equalizer System wouldn't "equalize" in this case?

I don't think it would, any more than a group of Pro Golfers playing against a group of hackers. The handicap is tilted toward the better shooter in general.
Better shooters are more consistent than lower rated shooters.
If a low player has a hot day, he might win, but, over a longer period of time the higher rated player will win more.

i know for a fact the equalizer system works .

i am a 5 and when i beat a 7 its because i played great

when i lose to a 3 its because of that damn equalizer system

People seem to enjoy putting an absolute on that term "equalizer".

It's a contest, to see who will win the game. Nothing is given, or "equal", and all the Equalizer does is give a less skilled player a chance against a more skilled player. I do not believe the intent was to make anything absolutely "equal", nor could it do so.

The higher skill level player wins the majority of the time, in our part of the world. That's because they are better players. At least the lesser skilled players have a chance with the handicap, and sometimes pull one out. Without it, why would a majority of these league players even show up, just to be run over by a more serious player?

:D Usually when I lose it's because I didn't shoot well enough to win.
If a 7 is on fire, nobody will beat him. If a 2 is on fire, he might win, unless he runs into a 7 on fire.

Around here the only way a 7 (in 8 ball)is going down is if he loses for about a year straight! If then!
If the 7 was a sandbagger, he would be a 3.
It does no good to sandbag as a higher level player! Why? Because you are allowing a lower leveled player to have more innings. This will keep the opponent at a lower skill level.

I agree with the sandbagging comment. I play as a 7 in 8; 8 in 9. I'm not moving down. I actually got moved down from an 8 to a 7, but two weeks later was moved again.

I could really care less about sandbagging to win; vegas and all that. I want to play my speed. I play APA with friends for fun. Either way, win or lose, I still have to wake up in the morning to work. Pool doesn't pay my mortgage....

Yeah, a lot of people still like to cry and complain about leagues.. they don't seem to get it that they're for fun.. recreation.. a hobby. Still, there are plenty of strong league players(BCA/APA/etc) that would back down many of the people that sit and talk #$^@. I think one of the first people I met that insisted on not joining and so on, couldn't even make it to a 7 in 8b when his g/f convinced him to play.. go figure. I like it, I enjoy the people and I imagine I'll continue to play as long as I can find teams to be on. Besides, I've got my sights set on taking down a few players that have knocked me out of a couple tournaments.. that and Vegas singles. Our LO is pretty cool, too, so that helps.

We pay $7/match. At 7/9, I get my money's worth. I consider it a hobby, just as if I'd played dodgeball or softball or something else fun. Toss in free table time and it really starts to cut into that $7.

If you let your skill level 2 or 3 keep score, they don't mark many or any safes unless you tell them to. They don't know usually. That is a sandbaggers dream scorekeeper.

I don't have anything against leagues. I've played in APA in 3 different states and BCA in a couple of different states. But, I can introduce you to some 3s that after that night's session will play you for what ever you want and string multiple racks on your azz. Of course, during league play they can't run 3 balls.

Hell, Chip Compton and Joey Gray play in the leagues around Oklahoma City. Even if you are a 7, if you run into one of them, all I can say is good luck.

The only way someone like that is still a 3 is because you let them be a 3.
If he's playing against me he won't stay there. I won't let him.
He will either have to play safe, and have it marked as such, or he will lose (or win)in a very short amount of innings. This will cause him to go UP in skill level.

OK, what ever. So, how long you been playing leagues. Because sandbagging has been a problem in leagues since they began. But, I guess no one has thought to try what you listed.

Actually, I'm not sure you understand. They don't mind losing, until of course when it really matters. Most of the sandbaggers I know have a winning percentage probably less than 50%. They usually like to play legit 2s or 3s and drag the inning out. Or, play strong 5s or 6s and lose horribly.

Then when you meet in citywide, the opposing team has an Ace in hole named Mr. Sandbagger. You think your team has a guaranty win with your strong 6 or 7, but guess what the opposing team counters with Mr. Sandbagger who can string racks when he wants to. Or, your up against total limit and have to play a 3, guess who your opposing team counters with?

Your idea of causing Mr. Sandbagger to go up is somewhat based on the fact Mr. Sandbagger is trying to win every match. That thought concept is kind of naive.

Again, I don't have anything against leagues or even sandbagger. Leagues are good for pool, but I assure you Kid, you can not cause a sandbagger to go up.
