Josey or Arnot basic SP????

Whats the difference in hit type? Is Josey to stiff? When they say stiff it dosent mean dead feeling right? I like to be able to feel the vibration and hear the shot. Thank you for any answers.

I have not played with an Arnot...but have several Joseys. IMHO, the Josey SP is a great playing cue...the fancier SP's are a best bang for your buck. The cues play very consistently from one to the other...so if you like the way one plays, chances are very high you'll like how another plays a well.

They are considered stiff players....but absolutely not dead players! These babies talk, talk, talk...LoL! You will get every bit of feedback desired. Great, solid players. You'll do fairly well on resale, should you decide you need to part with it....you should come fairly close to your initial investment...depending on the market at the time.

Fit and finish are top-notch. Customer service is also top-notch...some of the best in the biz. Genuinely some of the nicest folks you could work with. Oh yeah...and Keith was awarded 2011 ACA Cue Maker of the Year. :yeah:

Keith had some of his SP's at SBE this year...not sure how many, if any, he has left, but here is what he took with him:

I honestly cannot recommend them highly enough...and there are very few makers I will actually say that about.

They are typically not in the shop on Mondays and Wednesdays...but can be reached at the shop on the other days of the work week, and sometimes Saturdays. If you email....give Sherri a chance to get back to you, as they still need to get back home from the SBE and will likely have a slight email backlog from the days they were gone. But she WILL get back to you!

All the best!

Thank! for all the great info, One of the big reasons I like his set up on site is how in depth he lets up get into purchasing a cue. Best part is im not even talking about a custom. What shaft combination do you like, im quite partial to OB-1 and OB classic shafts if im not going L/D. How is his Timeless Timber shafts?

Does he purchase the spliced blanks or splice himself?

Well, there is obviously a Dufferin conversion in the pic...as to the blanks, I would prefer you direct all questions regarding specs and pricing to Keith and Sherri. I am but merely a fan and not affiliated with the Josey shop.

On my current Josey I have a Josey 'Primo' (his private reserve) shaft and a Timeless Timber shaft. While the cue plays equally well with either, my personal preference is for the Timeless Timber shaft. It should be noted, the TT shafts are very stiff, as a rule. My TT shaft, while very stiff, is also very lively...amazing feedback throughout. They are also darker than most shafts. Shorten the ferrule length and add a decent tip and you have a winner.

My Josey, note the color difference between the two shafts:

MY OH MY That is a cue if ive ever seen one...! WOW what a beauty,

So sorry to keep bothering you with questions but where are his cues usually balanced I dnt like a nose or butt heavy cue I like it right around 19 to 19 1/2 with a 59 inch cue. This is crucial for my comfort and I dnt want to rush into buying my player unless I know I will feel comfortable.

Also how would you compare the OB-1 shaft stiffness and wight compared to the timeless or normal shaft? Will he chage extra for a shortend ferrule and ofcourse i know he will for the tip. What size ferrule would u recamend?

Thanks so much again.

I play with a purpleheart fancy Josey SP with his timeless shafts and without a doubt an amazing player. They look good, feel good, and play outstanding. Both of my shafts (timeless timbers) have Kamui soft tips and are very stiff but have a great feel to them, with that "ping" sound when you hit them. I played a local who himself is a very good player and he commented that he knows my Josey plays well from just the sound it makes.

No problem with the questions....I will answer where I can. My cue is a little forward balanced, but I wanted it that way, and the 3/4" Stainless Steel sleeve at the joint help to achieve that. My first Josey was a fancy ebony SP that was actually slightly rear-weighted and purchased from them directly, but not made to my specs. Oddly...don't even ask me how, but once those cues went into stroking position, they both felt equally in balance. Remember...one of the perks of having a cue built for you is the ability to ask the maker to make it as YOU would like it...balance point included. Wood selection will have some bearing on this as well.

If memory serves, I believe that my ferrules are at 3/4" like my joint length. Some people like to go as low as 1/2" on the ferrule...it is alleged that a shorter ferrule will help reduce deflection. I do not think there is an up-charge on shortening a ferrule anymore than there is turning the shaft down smaller than 13mm. There is an up-charge for a Stainless Steel sleeve at the joint, otherwise it's the standard Josey joint with Radial pin.

I have zero experience with OB line of shafts, or any aftermarket shafts, such as the laminated LD-shafts. Tried 'em a couple of times on friends' cues, but didn't care for them pretty immediately.

If you do decide to place a custom order, make sure you have a list of questions and desired specs. This way, you ideally do not miss anything and they have a clear idea of what your needs are. Write down the answers as you get them, and you have a record now of what was discussed. I also usually add the date and if it was Keith or Sherri I spoke with. If this has been all done by the phone, I will also send them an email with all the specs and pricing discussed, as confirmation. Again, just another record, that they can now also review as needed. This goes a long, long way to avoid any miscommunication. I do this no matter what maker I am working with, and have never had an issue...but a few happy surprises.

That's a pretty good description. :) I only wish I could afford another TT shaft before Keith runs out of them. :sorry:

Thanks so much, been searching around the forums and have seen nothing but great user feedback about Josey cues, im pretty sure my mind is made up ;)

Josey is the best player out of the cues I have. Can't recommend it highly enough. Mine is with a 314 shaft though. But still hits stiff enough.

So please explain to me, as far as stiff? I would think stiff would feel dead? Im planning on getting a basic sneaky with phenolic for a more balanced feeling cue. Now I personally enjoy the (feedback) of a cue (vibrations or resignation) given off after the contact to the cue ball, would this be considered stiff or soft?

Have I mentioned that I love my Josey? I figure this has saved me money in the long run...I no longer search for a "magic cue".

Josey

I am on my second josey an upgrade plus I just ordered a sneaky Pete they are the best. Our local pro shot with a Jackson for 20+ years and was searching for a different cue for quite awhile. He spent 10 minutes shooting with my first Josey and had to have one. They are unbelievable. I played with my first for a year a sold it for what I paid for it. Second you will never find customer service like the Josey family. #1 in my book. I had a timeless timber and OB but nothing compares to his regular shafts. Love them.

I have no experience with Arnot cues, but I have a 60" Josey with timeless timber and nothing else I've hit comes close. My balance is at 18".

I don't know what other people mean by soft versus stiff hitting cues exactly, but when I think of soft hitting I think of a meucci where it feels like the cue mashes into the ball. Joseys have a nice sharp hit, make a beautiful tone and give a lively feel with vibration. If you hit an extreme english shot it springs but is not whippy. Definitely more feel than an Ob shaft.

I am 100% confident you will get just what you're looking for with a Josey.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I have a regular shaft as well as the timeless, and I can't recommend the upgrade enough.
