We Get What We Deserve

I cut out the excess fluff and clipped the real message.

Let me put the message in it's *proper* context and perspective; Lou Figueroa wasn't at SBE 2012.

It's all conjecture and speculation on his part.

Eric >from the peanut gallery

I read what you wrote. I guess I will delete you from me list of credible posters who attended:

"I had a similar opinion of the Oaks Expo Ctr. Overall, I didn't like it.

I made it a point to ask everyone I talked to (over 50 ppl). I asked them what their opinion was of the new Expo Ctr. I also asked them what, specifically, it was that they didn't like.

For the most part, these are the common complaints I heard:

-the building has no character/ambiance and feels like a dirty warehouse
-the lighting over some of the pool tables was terrible
-no hotel (need a car/inconveniet to go back to your room/cant drink due to driving)
-no restaurants within walking distance

These are the big ones. I left out the more nit picky ones.

Invariably, everyone I spoke with either said that the new place was "okay" or they didnt like it. Not one person mentioned that they liked it.

That said, I will still continue to support the SBE. IF anything, these aren't things that can't be fixed. From my understanding, Allen is signed up for a 2 year contract, so maybe some constructive feedback can change things.

Eric"

And, you weren't the only one with negative comments.

Just wondering, Eric: have you ever used the reviews on Trip Advisor, Angie's List, Consumer's Report, or even something written here about a pool room, tournament, or cue maker to decide whether a hotel, restaurant, or business deserves your business -- even though you've never used them before?

Now that is rich, oh wordsmith...

Of course I've used reviews from Trip Adviser, Consumer's Reports, Yelp (but not Angie's List, yet). I've also taken the advice that was written here about pool rooms, tournaments, etc. BTW, that is the key word; TAKEN ADVICE.

*I generally don't take other people's first hand opinions and use that to jump on the soapbox and preach as if it was MY first hand experience.*

Many of the problems that happen at pool events big and small could be foreseen and taken care of ahead of time. Instead, pool players make excuses. They suck it up. And go again the next year. Nothing changes.

Lou Figueroa
yes, sir
more of the same
please

Good post.. anyone with the experience at running an event should have all their act together so that the event goes off without any issues, but there is always soft excuses as to why this and why that wasn't addressed and that it will be addressed the next time and the ducks just can't wait for the next time(which tells you the character of those ducks right there). They don't call them ducks for no reason. .

What good have gamblers ever done for pool?- Jay Helfert

As I'm Lou's "bit-bin", I'm sure he won't see this...

I've taken hotel advice from Trip Advisor, Consumer Reports, etc... The key is that those reports are from people that have stayed at that hotel. And when I DO peruse the reviews for a particular hotel, I check the review against both the dates of the reviewer's stay, and the general composition of the review.
To my understanding, in the past year or so, the Riviera Hotel and Casino has revamped a bunch of rooms in the Mediterranean South and San Remo towers. I've stayed in those rooms prior to the renovation. Prior to... which means that my opinion of the rooms, at this point, really isn't valid anymore.

So why would I take the advice in a hotel review from someone that hasn't even stayed at that hotel since the changeover ?

I wouldn't. I'd look for the opinion of someone that has been to the new place.

Food for thought...

Preaching by lightly tiptoeing around, with vague references doesn't give you deniability. The bottom line is that you took other ppl's firsthand experience with the new SBE and formed your own opinion, without any firsthand knowledge yourself. Then, you start an opinionated thread based on your assumptions of the new SBE.

While it's fine to have an opinion, no matter how flimsy it may be, to jump on a soapbox with that unknowledgeable opinion is just a joke.

Nice try, but there was nothing in that post that remotely sounded like I was trying to portray myself as having first hand knowledge of the SBE. I guess it also don't matter to your discerning eye that I said way back in this thread that I didn't go this year and said several times that I was speaking from the numerous reports from credible members who did, lol. I'd also like to point out that your charge that "I generally don't take other people's first hand opinions and use that to jump on the soapbox and preach as if it was MY first hand experience" implies, with the use of "as if it was MY first hand experience," some sort of purposeful deceit.

Putting that aside for a moment, let's return to the issue of forming an opinion without first hand knowledge: do you read any newspapers or news web sites? You know -- all those reporters writing about local, national, and international events you have no first hand knowledge of... ever form an opinion and share it with anyone else ;-)

Angie's List sucks, and so does Consumer Reports. I have followed the advice on a couple items in both, and each one was wrong -- IMHO, of course.

Trip Advisor, on the other hand, was great. It is a wonderful resource for seeking quality, comfortable, and CLEAN hotels. I had used it all the time when we were on the road, and it never steered me wrong.

You and Lou are duking it out verbally on the thread. I think each of you are first-class pool peeps and have a great deal to offer. It doesn't take an army to figure out who's right and who's wrong sometimes. People do differ in their opinions about a variety of topics, but it's all good. You two are some of my favorite posters to read.

We're just rasslin' :-)

I like CR, never used Angie's List, but do rely on TA. It's pretty good as long as you're able to pick out the reviews that are obvious shills or people just looking to pick a bone.

And thanks, you're a favorite of mine too.

Thanks, Jennie.
