Do cue makers collect cues from other current cuemakers?

I know, obviously, that most cue makers will make a cue for themselves as their main player, but I was wondering if you guys collect as well.

Does anyone ever ask you to take a cue from a different cue maker on trade for one of your own cues?

I know it is a stupid question, but I was curious anyway.....

I can only vouch for one and that's myself and the answer is "No chance".

I think if I had some expendable cash, I'd probably have a collection. Right now, the only collection I have is kids....

Your collection will give you more enjoyment over the years than all the Szams and Bushkas ever could. Some folks dont call them kids, they are referred to as trophies.

cuemakers collect cues

I have a Chester Krick I would never part with. I know several cuemakers that have Haleys or are on the list. Andy Gilbert has a collection of purpleheart cues. I believe Cory Barnhart has a collection. What I haven't seen is many real cuemakers that are flippers.

I collect my own rejects.
Got a few shafts with turds that showed up on the last cut.

I do take trades at times and try to resell most of them. If it is a Hall of Fame person or likely not too distant in the future Hall of Fame cuemaker I will most likely keep the cue. So yes I collect cues, but not from very many current cuemakers. In other words I am not into what is popular right now, I am more into vintage cues. I do have cues from several living cuemakers, but very few of them would be considered newer cuemakers.

I know of a couple of cuemakers that have collections of cues although as far as I know they are not from current cue makers as your post asks. As for being asked to trade another cue for one of mine... happens sometimes and so far I have said no. No one has offered an old JW for a fraction of it's value yet! :D

Most of my cue for cue trades have been trading a much nicer cue for a simple cue. I traded a nice Ivory inlaid cue I built for a Franklin era South West. I took a plain jane Tad plus a little cash for one of my cues. I once took a Gina and a Josswest for a lathe. But no one has offered me a Hall of Fame caliper cue for a fraction of it's value either. I have taken a lot of lower end cues plus cash in on trade. It has probably not been worth it as I wind up spending a lot of time answering emails and phone calls about a used cue before selling it for very little more than I allowed for it on trade.

If someone came to me with a Jerry Franklin SW, Dave Kersenbrock, James White, Joel Hercek, Paul Mottey, Ron Haley, Black Boar, Gina or Dennis Searing, I'ld be more than happy to trade.

But as Joey already explained, customers don't show up with these cues for trades...

And besides that, my cues don't cost that much wich would mean I'ld have to give some cash with my cue which is not my goal...

I'ld love to make trades with cuemakers themselves though. In the style of; I make a cue for you and you make one for me...

Just my two cents...

When I was making cues, yes, no question. I will be making cues again after I figure out which property to move to that has needed space. Cues are functional Art. I like the beauty of them. Yes, in the upcoming years I plan to get a good collection going.

I have a Gilbert and a Barnhart with another Barnhart in the works. Does that count as a collection? Obviously I have several Carolinas, seeing as how i work there.
