Must have books

Hello all,

A little background first. I used to play three cushion a fair amount. I was never good, but loved the game. My high run was 6. I play mostly by feel. The only "system" I used was a system to get to the corners. (I think it is called corner five??? It has been a while).

I now live very near a hall with a nice billiards table.

Can anyone recommend a good book to learn billiards? Something that starts from the basics, covers basic systems, and perhaps shot selection? I would like to think much of it will be too basic for me, but heck, it HAS been years...

Thanks in advance.

Puma; My name is Bill Smith "Mr3Cushion", I invite you to visit my website; http://mr3cushion.com

I have written a book and DVD combo " The Concise Book of Position Play" 2 yrs. ago. It covers many basics important to playing the "Modern" game of billiards, along with 12 chapters on position play to improve your scoring.

I have also just released my second endeavor on position play, a NEW DVD over 2hrs. in length, that covers more advanced solutions to playing position. The title is "The Secrets EXPOSED Consecutive Scoring For a Higher Average.

I hope you visit my site, I think you'll find it informative and entertaining!

Get Robert Byrne's three books on pool/billiards. His intro to three cushion is the best available in English -- that would be in his "Standard Book of Pool and Billiards." He covers basic concepts, standard shots, a little position play, a dozen or two systems including why they don't always work and a fair amount of history of the game.

Byrne has the best coverage of all the basics and a lot of specialty shots are included too. All of his books are bargains considering how much info they contain.

After you digest most of his stuff, Bill Smith's instructionals are good. If you're a numbers guy, I think the Billiard Atlas books by Walt Harris have a lot of good systems in them.

If you have the money and interest, you can try and find a copy of Eddie Robins "Position Play in Three Cushion Billiards". Might be 200 bucks, though.

Videos from Accu-stats or a membership to Kozoom.com so you can watch matches would also be a great learning tool.

Roger Conti's book remains my favourite on the subject ever. I was under the impression that it's been translated into English, but googling it, not sure… Other than that, agree that Robert Byrne's books include some fine stuff on carom billiards.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Robert Byrnes book on EBAY sells for 6 or 7 dollars. His first book is good for beginner play.

It was translated into German as "Billard fu:r Jedermann" and into Spanish as "Billar" but I don't know of any English translation.

Bummer… It's a true classic of the genre!

Thank you for all the replies. I just received the Byrne Advanced Techniques, and am also picking up his Standard book. (Used off Amazon, it's almost too good to be true!) I actually read the Standard book many years ago, and that is what got me to "here"! :) I am going to read it again.

Bill, I'll be sure to check out your website.

I have also been checking out youtube and watching the pro's shot selections. I try to guess what shot they will take. When they take a shot I would not have tried, I try to think about why. I figure taking the right first shot is a big step in the right direction.

Thanks again all.

Thanks All.

I picked up the standard and advanced Byrne books. Great reading. I've been to practice a few times solo, and can already see an improvement.

Bill, thanks for the link to your site. I've been checking out the articles you have. It feels a bit advanced for me, but I suppose it probably is not. (After all, thinking about leave in 8 and 9 ball is never too early as a beginner in my mind, perhaps 3 cushion is the same!)

Back to the practice!
