Speed Control and Cue Weight

I have always played with a lighter cue.... around 18oz. I grew up hearing speed control is easier with a lighter cue and I found that heavier cues felt too butt heavy. Probably because I was a kid.

Recently, I picked up a 20oz cue with a 18.5" balance point that feels great to me when I stroke. The balance makes it feel lighter. Anyhow, my cue ball control is just as good as with my 18oz cue and long stop shots seem to be a bit easier. Slow rolls are not a problem.

Is there any truth to lighter is better for cue ball control? I am thinking not but would appreciate your opinion. What arethe pros and cons of heavy versus light cues?

Thanks!

I think the big thing is trying as many different uses you can. I kept coming back to my McDermott, it wieghts 16.4 ozs with an ob classic shaft an a black hard kamui tip. Balance point is at 19 3/8inch. All I can say is that it works and feels good for me. I play BCA 8ball and carry a 9.1 handicap.....And I.trird a lot.. Check my sig.... That needs up
Dated..
Good luck with ur quest to find the right cue.

JMW,

you gave yourself the answer-- the balance is the key. You have to feel immeditaly comfortable with your cue- that s it :-)

then it makes no difference at all, to play 17,5 or 20.5 oz. I played 17.9 for a long time. And now on my Josey i play with almost 19.5 oz (around that) and it feels perfectly, just because the balance is just great for ME.

JMW...No, there is no truth to that speculation. Speed control can be taught and learned using any weight cue. MOST poolplayers, amateur and pro, play with 18-20oz cues. There aren't really 'pros and cons' for cue weight, within those guidelines. Use the weight that feels best to you. I have used 18oz cues for many years.

Willie Mosconi just Improvised, Adapted, and Overcame with the equipment of the day. BTW Willie never took a lesson, he learned from observing other player. Read Willie's Game it is all there....

I too prefer lighter weight cues. In addition I also prefer a thinner handle somewhere in the 1.18-1.22 diameter range at the butt cap. I have had a number of cues built this way for me.

Bruce...You're such a tool! What do you think Mosconi was doing when he traveled cross-country for MONTHS at a time with Greenleaf, as a child. You don't really believe that he didn't "pick up" things from playing Greenleaf, do you?
