Legal shot ?#2

Hello i am new to the forum but wanted to get some opinions regarding the fouette shot.

If done correctly there is no double hit but there are many players who just automatically call this shot a foul. Even with some high speed you tube videos it is difficult to tell visually. How many of azers would cry foul if your opponent shot this shot during a game?

Is that also known as "cross face" english?
I don't think I've ever heard that term. Inside english is left if you are cutting the object ball to the left (as in the video) and right if you are cutting the ball to the right. Among snooker players I think it is called "check side".

I think you said higher squirt cues are better for this. Is that because higher squirt means the cue and ball separate at a greater angle?

That's certainly the feeling I have. My cue has some super-squirt shafts (with brass inserts) but I've never made the connection of trying fouette shots with them.

Bob, did you have an article about this shot in one of the magazines maybe 5 years ago?

I saw it in print somewhere, and tried it at the pool hall, and was able to successfully execute it after practicing it. I have never seen the shot in a game. (pool, not 3C)

In my opinion, only someone who has heard of this shot, and actually practiced it themselves, would not cry foul if you executed it on them.

Inside english. Some shafts work better for this than others.

Would this be one of those rare times where higher squirt is advantageous? Or is there an aim that you can get the same result with the full range of squirty shafts.

Freddie <~~~ can't shoot this shot

Personally I wouldn't use this shot in a game. Especially if you are playing amatuer pool no one is going to know what this is and when you tell them its a 'fuette' or however you spell it they are just going to think you made it up.

I believe I had a thread dealing with mass in front of the cueball and getting your stick out of the way. In that thread someone (I think it was Bob) commented about the fuette technique but other than that and trick shots in general I cant see a reason to use this in a game.

Actually I wouldn't even use this at nationals if anyone goes. The refs down there probably wouldn't know what it was either.

Here is the video that Bob did on that shot

I've practiced this shot as well and able to get sometimes 2-3 rail draw for position which is crazy cool but for the practice to obtain this skill its a shame when its called a foul. this is probably for the same reasons you mentioned above.

I think I'll keep doing it anyway sometimes BIH is worth to see the look people have afterward.

thanks for the replies.

The lack of general knowledge of the shot is a problem.

There are some cases where it is your best chance to continue a run. The best example I can think of is when you manage to get straight in on a very close ball and the shot is long. (For a short shot, you might be able to use a very short stroke or play a thin hit.) At the DCC 14.1 this happened to one player who was on a 71-ball run and got stuck behind a ball after a break shot. Instead of a fouette, he jacked up, used draw and fouled the ball.

Would be a handy shot in one pocket.I usually have to jack straight up in the air and hope I get enough speed on it.I do think most people whould cry foul especially if they didn't know the shot or know what was comming.

I will have to ask Don W about the shot,he may know it and he loves giving away free knowledge(not that I have the stroke to execute it).

I have found that a very loose grip and longer bridge make it easier for me.
