I have been playing around with inlaying some mother of pearl.
And was woundering about crushed MOP rings.
Ring will be going into ebony.

I was thinking of crushing up some mother of pearl mixing in
ebony saw dust
black epoxy dye
5 min epoxy

Has anyone tried this before.
thank you

be careful

the dust of mop is very bad for your health. i have used lots of mop in my jewelry business and we always cut, sand and polish it under a stream of water. i am sure crushing it will be almost as bad. you might want to check with rio grande as they sell crushed mop and the correct epoxy used for inlays. www.riogrande.com hope this helps. chuck

I have used crushed Turquoise in cues for inlay work, but have never tried crushed MOP. I did not even know it was used that way. Post some pictures when you do it. I would tend to think clear epoxy might be better for MOP, but if the chucks were large enough black lines between might look cool.

Most of the old pearl paint jobs on cars where done with crushed MOP added to the paint or clear coat hence the name but all of that has gone to a synthetic MOP you might want to check with a auto paint store or house of colors online they will have the flake in powder form already .

cushed stone

i have done the crushed stone, and so forth.it's pretty simple to cut the pocket and mix what ever with an epoxy and fill the hole.the issue i encountered was that a year or two later it will shrink badly.

first try was a failure

My first try was a falure
I super glued in each bigger piece then mixed you some MOP dust and ebony saw dust with liquid hide glue titebond, the glue wasnt strong enough!

I have done the crushed turquoise, that seemed to work good with fiber glass resin.
