Reyes & Appleton TODAY

Took off "lunch" from work today and visited Buffalo Billiards and watched the matche between Efren and Darren.

They said Efren was too old. They said he was over the hill.

Eren REALLY got lucky on the hill-hill game. Efren led most of the match but Darren showed why he is one of the best players in the world and held on tenaciously, responding to Efren's incredible safety play shot for shot.

Efren finally had to kick at the four ball HARD because there was no place to hide. With only the 4-9 left on the table, everything was spread pretty well except the 4 and the 9 which were close together near the head spot. Efren kicked hard hoping to make the 9 ball in the corner pocket or anywhere else it would fall. The 9 was close by and he could have combinationed the 9 by accident but he hit the 4 a hundered miles an hour and it missed the pocket hit the side rail, then the foot rail, then the other side rail and clipped the 9 ball and the 9 rolled ever so slowly toward the side pocket and it looked like Efren was putting the mojo on the roll of the 9 ball urging it toward the side pocket. And just like that, Efren won the final deciding game between he and Apple. My my, but that was luck of the Pinoy of the 3rd Degree. I like Darren quite a bit, especially his talent, his gamesmanship and competitive desire. He is one of a kind. I hate to say it but I was pulling for Efren the whole time. I understand Father Time and this may be Efren's last stand for the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship. I'm sure Darren would understand.

I may sound crazy here but part of me thinks he was going for that 9 ball shot. The reason I say that is this. He was looking at something before the shot then shrugged his shoulders as id to say "WTF" Then as the ball was rolling toward the pocket he seemed to be waiting for it. Finally, I think Efren don't show boat like that hi fiveing etc on a fluke. I think he is more likley to shake his head and say sorry. Just my opinion but if you look at everything I said it kinda makes sense Although It was either one of the greatest shot ever or pure luck.

Just my 2c. I think he was going for the 9 in the side. just sayin. He wouln't have hit the 4 so hard if he was trying to pocket it.

Is there a way for the rest of us to see it?

gopi-1 posted a link in the US Open updates thread...here you go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8Av-M_hg68

Personally, it looks like he was trying to kick the 4 into the 9 hoping to either make the 9 or (more likely) send the cue ball up-table. Looks like he missed hitting the 4 into the 9 and it wound up going 3 rails and accomplishing both tasks.

Even if the 9 hadn't dropped, it looked like Darren would've been hooked when he came to the table...

Thanks for the link.

It sure looks like he was going for it the way he was jumping around & 'milking' his cue to pull it in.

I was just kidding when I said 'I heard he called it' by Joey's description, but it sure looks like I may have been inadvertantly correct.

If anyone thinks Efren played that shot to kick the 4 three rails then cut the nine in the side I would have to vehemently disagree.

The obvious shot there is to play the 4 directly into the nine for the dead bank cross side.

Anyone who thinks Efren was riding there 9 there is a banana short of a bunch.

He was playing to pocket the the 4 one rail knowing the high side of the 4 sends the cue ball up table, which was his main focus.

Btw, he did come pretty close to pocketing the 4 in one of the 2 lower pockets.

Fluke...sort of.

He was kicking hard to make the 4 in the corner and carom into the 9.Of ethe kick is low percentage so he hit it hard to have a chance at making the 4 in another pocket or possibly making the 9,most likely in one of the side pockets.

I believe he was trying to get the ball speed necessary to try and kick the 4-ball into one of the bottom corner pockets and have the angle to carom the cue ball uptown which is what happeend.. Reason is that there are blocking balls and also the 5 was waiting there for the cue ball after its travel.

He deserved the win because:

Darren broke em wide open, missed a 1 ball pretty bad.
Secondly Darren got vey luck to hide the 4 behind the 9. He even pointed after the shot what he was trying.
