It is about the game, pool winning is addictive i have been there done that, it has negative effect on those kids that indulge into it, and since there is no safeguard to prevent them from this, kids should not be put in camps to learn the game. Social gathering, family bonding at home pool, or community center is ok.
So, no other form of winning is not addictive. In any sport, their are winners and losers. That is a hard, cold fact and a hard, cold fact of life. The concept that everyone can be a winner is bullshit and has done more harm then good.
If I had a kid that was so passionate about playing pool, I would encourage it and not discourage it. Not everyone's path through life is getting a college degree right out of high school. Nor is going to college for everyone and the false belief that a college education guarantees you anything in life is the problem is seen by the current student debt education problem.
See I was one of those that got out of high school and went to college and played pool rather than go to class. Being at the pool table was the one area of my life where I was in total control of the outcome. No one to tell me what to do when, like parents and like going to school.
I ended up joining Naval Aviation being assign to P3s as a avionics tech for 8 years, a Inflight Tech for 3 of those years and a instructor for 4 of those years. These 8 years were the best education I got in terms of life, professionalism and standards, team work. What I experienced in these years have served me well over the years, more so then just going to college for 8 years.
I will not go into the what all I have done, but it has been a wild range of careers and jobs. I'll list a few of the cool ones:
Testing for a totally implantable hearing aid.
Installing and project managing of very high level of security systems at a major DOD contractor
Covert camera installations
Useability testing of Web E Commerce sites
Tech support over a the phone and on site
Project management and designs of security and CCTV systems
And more.
The point is that I may not have the quality and variety of life I do if I had gone to classes instead of following my heart which started with playing pool. People are real good at telling ya what to do, but suck at letting you do what ya want.
Some of the dumbest people I have met and worked with were "highly educated." I've worked with college educated people and there is no guaranteed that they are any good, that they really are educated beyond the paper they have.
You had a problem and you are transposing your bad experience onto others assuming they are gonna have the same issues as you did.
Some of the most competitive people are family members and friends. I was playing a friend yesterday and was having a OK time having fun, joking and such, until I realized, he was trying to win, to beat me at this game that was suppose to be played for fun.
Well, once I realized this, I made sure he wasn't having any fun.
