Well I haven't posted about this case in a while. Was not my favorite style and then Jive goaded me into making him a couple.

Now with Rusty and Marc and Two Shades among others there are plenty of good envelope case makers out there. Post your favorites.

Here is some of our work.

:-) Not at all. I have you to thank for making me do something I should have done a long time ago. I was a, ahem, case snob thinking envelope cases were too easy and beneath me..... But your persistence brought me around.

Now the damn watch band and case?? Do you think I am a leather worker or something??? :-)

Haha I'm glad I contacted u when you were in a good mood then!

Send me the watch band and case or your dancing singing video clip goes on YouTube. Consider this a warning, I'm not very patient.

A case I'ld like to own someday...

Hi John,

Here's the case I'ld love to earn someday...

I'll trade it for a cue... I make you a nice sneaky pete with leather wrap you like so much and you make me the case... How would you like that?

Greetz,

Tom

Those 3 orchids are very fine looking. The green stems have great dimension and are very smoothly cut. Seeder and stylus background (one dot at a time) looks soooo cool. Love the curl back up of the flame at the top. Then there is that bar and shield with the hot BB logo, and the lid that looks like tread on a big fat avon tyre. hand stitched with red / black spec wrap linen. Top of the food chain Ralf...I hope it is a treasure to you.

A case snob eh?
That there is amusing JB, as I have always thought lined sprinkler pipes with whatever kind of leather wrapped around them and seamed with rapid rivets was a speedy way of making something that looks leather crafty. But as we both know, there is always more to it than meets the eye. Anybody can make a case, a few make good cases, fewer still make great cases. A proper envelope is a very great case. I do expect that this thread will illustrate this.

Yeah, I am ashamed to admit that EVEN THOUGH I spent time with Chas in his shop and even though I know the effort in handstitching I still felt not much love for the envelope style as something I wanted to do. I mean I absolutely was in awe of Chas' work and yours and Rusty's as far as the decoration goes. But I thought yeah, yeah, it's a simple case....not worth my time.

And actually envelopes are fairly simple to do but that doesn't take away from their usefulness and versatility. Once we did a few of them I was in love with them. They do allow for a lot of creativity and ample space to put a lot of art. And yours are pure class with some many great touches.

I think that the simpler the case is the better it has to be, no where to hide. The stitching is exposed on both sides, all the edges are laid bare for all to see. The leather is exposed. Basically any little flaw is there to be seen by everyone so the maker really has to pay attention.

And I fully agree, the elegance is off the chart with a well done envelope case. No more than needed, just great leather without much else to protect the precious cues inside.

So, me case snob no more. I am humbled and deeply appreciative that you and Rusty carried on this form in cue cases and took it to much higher levels.

Hand Stitching.

For those that don't know the double needle saddle stitch is the strongest method ever discovered. It is tough to do, time consuming and has the best finished appearance. In this video George does a wallet sized piece. Imagine the time needed to do a cue case sized piece. And in the video he is doing it with punched holes which are loose so as to show the technique. The best leather workers make slits and have to force the needles through the leather with some effort to create an even stronger bond.

Look very closely at Marc's stitch work. This itself is a skill as well as an art form.

well, the sheridan style is popular......

pretty, smooth narrow curves. shading that requires skill and touch, and eyeball (not just a whack on a thumb print) (look where the leaves turnback), and pretty (unbeveled) dress cuts that feather out to the surface, genuine ostrich trim. Hand sewn to boot - should cost about $10000 at HERMES. less is done by hacks. Some guys cut it, and some guys scratch it like they are scared. Celebrate the envelope done well!

I love it Marc and mine is the Nutz. It's in my home and NOT sold:thumbup:
Cheers from sunny Thailand

:-) Give me a few weeks advance notice and I can have something ready for you! As much as we have talked I have plenty of ideas.

Will be hard to top Marc's work though.... but what are challenges for if not to accept them?

JB, I have great respect for your achievements in cases, both in aesthetics and protection and promotion of quality. I also respect Justis in his marketing and quality to the top players. I can't tell you how much I love Porper's use of high strength molded foam - (clever as hell). Good luck to innovators. Better luck to those who do the sos all of the time. They need a break and important friends!
