Bank or Cut?

For all those who say "cut it" -- what about if the cue ball is moved a ball to the left? How about 2 balls? At what point does the bank win?

Bob if it is 1 cb to the left , then without question I would bank it. as the shot stands now the cut is in order

It is nearly a natural bank...
I personally don't think any bank is "natural" if the ball is that close to the rail. For me a natural bank is a bank where you're positive that the OB will achieve full natural roll when contacting the cushion (not to mention the bank angle is geometrically natural). For this particular shot with the OB that close to the rail, achieving full natural is not guaranteed. You'd have to hit the OB pretty softly in order for it to achieve natural roll when contacting the cushion, but hitting a bank that softly introduces other variables that would increase your chances of missing. If the ball was a ball or two further off the rail on the same bank line, then the bank would be more "natural" and thus easier. But the cut shot would be easier as well.

See below.

One ball left is enough to change the odds enough to bank

See above!

I am an APA 6/7.

I would bank the ball and not have a second thought on it.

For that shot, I feel more comfortable and more confident on the bank.

Maybe my POV is a little different in that I love playing One Pocket and Banks over 8 and 9. That may put that bank a little higher on my list over the cut.

You had better learn that the cut is best. If you're more confident with banking here, you've got some work to do the next time you're at a table.

I cut this with straight top.I don't think missing should even enter your mind on this shot, imo. If you think about missing it you probably will. I'm either shooting to make the ball or shooting safe. Those in between shots usually don't turn out very good.I never did believe in .. where you were trying to miss it long or short.I just don't see how that can work. You either shoot to make it or shoot to miss it.Least that's my way of thinking.
Sorry to get off topic, just thought I would throw some food for thought out there.
Move it one cball to the left it and becomes a bank for me.John B.

This guy's on track, keep an eye out for him!

Missing long is going to drive me to drink(more). I think it's in the same way when kicking.. if you miss, you'd rather hit it on a certain side usually. I guess it all depends on the situation.

Cut it in with extreme right english & put the cue ball way up table just in case you mis. If so, you could leave a long bank or a long thin cut. Or...you could leave it dead in the pocket.

Regards,

I don't think there's any real case of "if I miss" here. For my money I'll cut it in with no english every time and empty my pockets if anyone wants to bet against the shot.

Note: No english, but a high ball.

extreme right english would worry me about scratching if I was "trying to leave the cue up table". i'd bank that mother...I suck at cut shots

Cut it for the win, I don't care what my opponent has on the table..... if you can't feel confident on this cut shot, for the win, you really should not even be in the banking mind set.

The only way I'm banking this is if the pocket was blocked, or it was a friendly game with a buddy, and I wanted to rub some salt in the wound :)

PS: Plus, one of the best bankers on the planet would cut it really tells you all you need to know !!!

Most will say cut it, but banking is not an incorrect decision if you feel the percentage is the same or better for you on that day, on that table.

If your worried about missing and getting safe you mite just go ahead and bank it.
Your making the shot more than what it is.No need for all the extra stuff.
I think if you get a chance to win like in this situation you dont ask to much of the shot or your going give it away.Just saying.

Maybe shoot this with CJ's touch of inside.

Anytime you have a shot on a money ball where it appears you have an equal chance of making a cut or a bank, you should always choose the cut.

You better be cutting this ball. Unless you're John Brumback or something. Or Efren. But even Efren would choose a cut I think, unless he wanted to troll you.

You also should be practicing cut shots like this to get an understanding in your head of where you need to hit to make it, every time.

Merry Chrsitmas.

I would bank it too. But I'm just a banger playing on a beat up bar table and when I bank balls people think it's soooo cool. LOL! :D

Well then, you don't really think it's an equal chance......

If it is truly an equal chance, it really does not matter...unless you are playing for the miss...then the the cue ball path figures in.....

But of course...common sense says cut it. I don't deny it.

I would say the correct answer is to cut this shot. You always have to take into account that you may miss. With the bank, both balls will be on the same side of the table, and possibly leaving an easy shot. With the cut, the CB will travel in the opposite direction in the event of a miss.
