There are a few other cue makers that get their wood from the same place Tony does. Those cue makes pay less for it than Tony. Tony gets charged a premium because of the value of his cues I believe and the fact of how picky he is about his materials. When Tony gets a bunch of shafts he starts production. When he makes his cuts, if its not premium ,no marks,no stains ,and many other factors too he tosses them into the fire wood pile. He is precise and selective on everything he uses.
Example ONLY: he calls dealer Ordering 100 shafts. Say his price is $100 each(I'm not sure what they go for but this is a example)! That bill is $10,000
When he does his production, for his likings & quality control say he only gets. 50 good shafts. Well guess what he has 50 bad ones he don't get credit for and he doesn't need to eat that cost. The supplier doesn't eat it either. So now his $100 per blank shafts are $200 @ cost. So when collars/ ferrules /ferrule-less/time/tips /inlays get involved there is a cost. Then a small profit is made by Tony which is expected. This is demand to seek the best or one of the best.
Other cue makers ordering the same wood from the same guy at lesser price use all 100 and don't care? You be the judge. Do they not see or have the know how of what tony does? Or is there nothing wrong with the wood tony tosses out? By any means I trust Tony 110% and his opinion and would pay for a shaft from him direct anyday
