Derby City thread for match updates/general discussion

Oh found it. Justin Hall takes the cheeze.

1st Jusitn Hall
2nd John Morra
3rd John Brumback
4th Shannon Daulton
5th Brian Groce
6th Shannon Murphy

Justin Hall claims the winer-take-all event. This was dominated by Hall and Morra with Hall playing well in the final stages to get the cash.

Well, looks like the "other" Shannon (Murphey) is playing great bank pool and I would consider him a favorite now to take the title this year. It took him about 15 minutes to white wash SVB and about the same time to freeze out the Freezer. He followed that performance with a banking clinic against John Brumback that resulted in a lopsided 3-0 victory his way. I feel good about his redemption this year, as he borrowed my cue last year to lose his second match to Tim Heath...maybe my cue is unlucky???:sorry:

Speaking of John Brumback, he bounced right back with a huge comeback over Dennis Orcullo. Dennis is obviously an elite player and beating him at anything involving a cue is quite a feat, so well done John! John might just have the Filipinos # this year, as he scratched out a hard fought win against Alex. Gotta like John's chances from here, and also gotta root for fellow AZB'ers, so John and Shannon are my pics to take it down from here. We will see.

In other news, I saw Mike Dechaine and Eric Durbin practice for the 10 ball event tonight on the 10' tables. Durbin got the 9 ball (edit: they were only playing for $200 per set) and Mike won the match 9 to 6. Durbin was playing pretty well though, and the spot was more nominal than anything. Having said that, Mike's break is huge and he is running out consistently, so he's super hard to beat.

As to the 10' tables, I just don't see the huge appeal. They aren't bad by any means, but I don't think that they add to the game in any meaningful way. just my opinion of course, but there you have it. I'll gladly watch it on 10 footers all day if that is where pool is headed. Still, like Durbin said to Mike before the match: "it's still pool, just with an extra foot"...:D That's what I kinda think too, especially after watching some top flight pool on them.

Anyway, have fun at the Derby to all who can attend a day or two. The action is fun to sweat.

Cheers,

JL

FWIW, I saw most of the Batram/Van Boening match, and the main factor was the use of the Magic rack, and frankly, a few good rolls for SVB.

SVB prolly failed to make a ball on the break mebbe 5 times in the match, and when he did, Batram was hooked. Not sure if I remember Bartram missing any outs, whatsoever, and was kicking safe life Efren.

After the loss Batram basically said "flip it", but rack with a wooden rack instead of the magic rack. SVB said no. Batram then offered to play the same way again.. SVB said it was too late, but would play the next day. Pretty sure that did not happen, but perhaps because Batram was busy playing Nick Hickerson. Read into it what you will as far as SVB is concerned...

This may have already been posted, but here is the matches in round 10 of the banks:

Carlo Biado (1) v Francisco Bustamante (1)
Francisco Bustamante (1) v Carlo Biado (1)
Louis DeMarco Jr (1) v Shannon Murphy (0)
Joseph Gray (1) v Skyler Woodward (1)
Justin Hall (1) v Thorsten Hohmann (1)
Thorsten Hohmann (1) v Justin Hall (1)
Warren Kiamco (1) v Dennis Orcollo (1)
Shannon Murphy (0) v Louis DeMarco Jr (1)
Dennis Orcollo (1) v Warren Kiamco (1)
Skyler Woodward (1) v Joseph Gray (1)

Looks like I spoke too soon about John B having the Filipino's #, as Kiamco put him out.

I still do like Shannon here, as he is playing great. Thorsten makes an interesting addition to these late stage matches.

Dee Adkins (0) v Ronato Alcano (0)
Eric Durbin (0) v Dennis Orcollo (0)
Johnathan Pinegar (0) v Paul Potier (0)
Mike Dechaine (0) v Richie Richeson (0)
Oscar Dominguez (0) v Alex Pagulayan (0)

Charge it! We're waiting.

Sadly, I had to return to work today (have you ever noticed that work is a 4 letter word???). I'll try to get some updates from my buds who are still there and pass them along...

Just perused the results screen and found that Dechain beat Richie Richeson. Bernie Pettipeice beat Souquet.

Also, if there were an award for coolest name of the tournament, the award should go to Aaron Infinity.

a notable upset

Just saw the that Arron Wolfrey upset Gabe Owen in round 1 of the onepocket. Interesting...that's not "One Pocket His Way" he he he.

Shannon Murphey is on fire!

Just got an update - Shannon beat L. DeMarco 3 to 0 in 13 minutes! This guy is on a mission!

That's ridiculous. I would have given anything to have watched that match, provided I didn't sneeze.

Looks like they're down to 3 in the Banks:

Justin Hall: no buyback
Bustamante: no buyback
Shannon Murphy: has his buyback remaining

Busty got a bye in the 11th round, so I believe he's ineligible for a bye in the 12th. So, looks like a coin flip between Murph and Justin. The lucky one goes to the finals. The other to face Busty in the semi's.

BUT, I just realized that really only applies if Murph gets the bye. If so, he's in the finals and it's sudden death elimination between Hall and Busty. The winner of that match would have to double dip Shannon.

NOW, if Justin gets the bye to the 12th round.....he's still not in the finals, if Busty beats Murph. At that point, all 3 guys have 1 loss......Justin wouldn't be eligible for a bye and there's a coin flip (or draw really) between Murph and Busty to see who DEFINITELY goes to the finals then. The other gets Hall.

Or at least I'm pretty sure that's how that goes.

I wish every tournament EVER was single elimination, with a buyback option, and fresh draw for every round.

It certainly makes things very interesting. You don't really get to see a bracket, which might turn people off, but it makes the potential match-ups that much more mysterious and exciting to see when they're posted.

They just posted Shannon Murphy vs. Bustamante for 7:00 p.m. tonite. It shows to be Table 1. Is that the Accu-Stats TV table?

Justin Hall will have the 12th round bye. If he "gets lucky".......Murphy wins, which eliminates Busty and we'll have the finals all set up. That would be a legendary match-up that we'll be talking about for a while, I'd say.

Alex beats Feijen

Broke the 9 in on the case game.

He's now trying to entertain the crowd by making the nine ball by putting the cue ball on the floor and trying to flip it onto the table with his feet. Gotta love Alex...an entertainer for sure!

Also just heard in the background of the stream that Alex just got the bye in the next round...

Dechaine keeps miscueing but he keeps on winning...whoops, spoke too soon...missed now SVB's turn. Jeez, SVB looking rough. Hooked himself during an elimentary run out. Decaines wins the rack....

Mark Wilson comments that SVB does not seem to be applying himself. Unusual for the South Dakota Kid...
