What criteria are you using to determine "best"? Durability? Feel? Cost effectiveness? Easy of installation? Looks?

Never mind,I guess the "why" isn't enough. I would have expected something like.

I feel such is the best because, ....., and......., and.....

Or a comparison.

Hi, no cuemaker here, only players view.

I like a wrap that has some surface, bumps (Swedish, - I know I know, - there has to be a better word for it...:-)), both printed and real lizzard feels good to me, but I do like when it´s small bumps - I think the stomach - cuemakers can correct me here. Don´t like the big eyes.
The very smooth wraps I don´t like because they tend to feel a bit like wrap less, - can be a bit to sticky for me.
E-wrap is real nice, Tiger has a black printed E-wrap that´s real nice also.
Martin at superiorcues has loads of wraps and good pics on them also.

So my criteria for choosing a wrap is that I want my shooting hand to slip, change place without being to slippery or to sticky. Hope it made sense:).

Good luck

Chrippa

Btw - I havn´t had any quality leather wrap, real or inprinted gone bad on me.

Thank you very much. I have been looking at lizard, but not sure on real or a print. Perfect

It looks like you are asking something that would be better asked in the main section. Being that you are asking cue makers, their reasoning for liking one wrap as opposed to another. Their reasoning would not be for playing purposes because many of their customers like different types of wraps. Rather, their reasoning would probably deal with how that wrap would match the rest of the cue. Both aesthetically and how the customer desires it. For others, it may also be easier to work with on install. Now, cuemakers are also (usually) players. So, you could ask how CM's like their wraps as a player.

In a nutshell, on this forum it is best to be detail-specific. Otherwise, ... Well, I guess you just found out how your question will be answered. BTW, one of the best qualities to have as a CM or cue repairer is attention to detail. And the previous responses to your question should indicate how serious the CM's on this forum takes this issue.

As a cue maker, I have no preference in leather wrap. My prices are structured so that I make money no matter what wrap I install. Also as a cue maker, I prefer no wrap because that gives me 11"-12" more inches to decorate with inlays, or to let a beautifully grained piece of wood strut it's stuff.

As a player, I prefer the stacked leather wrap for a couple reasons: (1) smooth consistent slightly tacky feel, and (2) it comes it a bazillion different flavors to match any cue. I do not like the bumps in the textured wraps. I do not like the seem in the one piece wraps. It's far easier to hide the seem in the textured wraps, but, again, I don't like them.

Hi Robs:
I don't get to get on here often lately, but here's my thoughts.
The best does not exist but what is best for your personal preference does exist. I have played with every wrap that I offer.
Real lizard feels very nice to me, I like the texture along with the character of the skins.
For Imitation Lizard, I like what Castillo offers, reason: The skins don't feel to stiff and fake. Good job Gil.

Real Elephant, Great feel and grip, If your hands sweat, Elephant absorbs it and still feels good over time.
Imitation, I haven't found one I like yet but I'm still looking.

Real Shark: Very good grip and the character of the skin is nice, Holds up very well. just don't burn a piece of it, It smells.

For regular leather:
I am very fond of Superiors cues, (aka Martin) Sting ray and Lattice.
I like the way both feel. My hands don't sweat and I use the stingray on my personal cue.

There are a lot of leathers I haven't tried yet but just because it's leather, doesn't mean it belongs on a cue, Some leathers just don't like to handled.

All of the above has nothing to do with price, or application, just how they each feel to me.

As far as looks goes Real Lizard will be hard to beat. As far as easy installation Black Textured pigskin or cow is one of the easiest to install. As far as lasting the longest. Embossed textured black is also the way to go. Black can be redyed with normal shoe leather dye and polished like a pair of shoes. When you get into black and white Ring Tail lizard and or various colors of embossed leather you will almost certainly never find that shade of leather dye to touch up any scuffs. So stay with black if possible and use consistant textures at first for easier nice looking seams and such.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all your input. I believe I am going to o with real lizard on my Josey. I appreciate the help
