Poker Tells or Pool Tells

Interesting thread. I play a lot of pool, but identify more as a fighter. I know who's what by the eyes, and how they carry themselves. I can spot a true boxer within seconds in the room on instinct. Tips on this thread have me tuning into players as well. Gotta expand my radar.

There's one guy who plays in the same league as me who was playing at an adjacent table. He's a pretty big guy but even so, he snapped off this perfect break that I couldn't help but envy. I break somewhere in 23-25mph range and can lose a bit of control when I do. This guy must've stopped the rock on a 30mph slam. I turned to my friend and said, "Who is this killer?" I was shocked to learn he was only a B player since most of the time, I only see a break like that at pro events. I try not to use someone's break as a gauge but often can't help myself.

I do think you're right though. Early in the set, a player will do something that will tip me off quickly. They'll take a position route I hadn't thought of or don't agree with that will immediately give me an indication of who will be chasing who.

Several years when I first starting shooting, my APA team was playing in the Valley Forge tournament. We put up a 6 who placed 38th out of a 2-hundred something players in Vegas playing in the 7s bracket (they said he was so close to being a 7 he had to play in their bracket, albeit as a 6). Well, he hits his first shot, and the other guy goes "Ohh, a good 6." At the time, I wondered how he could tell. But it's funny how you really can tell by the stroke/stance/bridge all that.

On the flip side of the coin...

A tell can also let the locals know there is a new table captain in the house....Street Smarts

Who do you think was/is the best "poker" player in pool...doesn't tip his hand...until it's closing time?

That's what a "Hustler" is? Hustler's can "sense" other Hustler's?

I used to be a fly fishing guide, and I could tell if a guy fished a lot as soon as he got out of his car. So many tells I won't bother listing them here on a pool forum. Funniest one was this husband and wife team on the West Branch of the Delaware in NY.

They both get out, already impeccably decked out in brand-new (and still dry, must have got dressed at home before leaving) matching Orvis gear, with every gizmo and doohickey ever invented hanging off their fishing vests like abstract Christmas trees. The guy grabs his rod, marches straight to the river bank, and slides on his ass about a hundred feet into the water. He then stands up, soaking wet, and pulls his stream thermometer out to measure the water temp.

Now, they do teach you that at the Orvis school (where he obviously bought the his-and-hers matching gear), but they never told him that West Branch lies below a bottom-release dam, and the water is always about 50°F at that point in the river.

At least they had one of the most popular spots on the WB practically to themselves. The hatch ended about an hour before they arrived, and most of the real fishermen were having dinner at the local tavern.

Anyway, carry on, I just saw your post about the stuff dangling from the cue case and it reminded of this experience.

Funny you talk about fly fishing! I just finished tying up some new patterns for the spring. A bass fishing buddy of mine wants to start fly fishing, SO, I figured I would start him off easy with a few woolybuggers, leaches, floating ants etc....I don't have the heart to give him any #22 midges, or mosquitos, or even beadhead nymphs :) After years of him chuckin the car keys at bass, He will need a season or so to work his way down to the tiny stuff! :)

He was laughing at my #1 weight 6'6" Orvis set up with 2# tippet....said there is no way I can catch ANYHTING bigger then creek chubs on it or it will break! :)
....newbys!

have fun

I agree with a lot of the things above

But the thing that tips me off to whether a cat can play or not, is how they chalk their stick.

The 'banger' that's trying to drill a deeper hole into the chalk cavity, I'm not too worried about. Yeah, maybe they can make a few shots, but I'm feelin' pretty good about my odds.

It's the player that brushes chalk on the 'right way' that suggests to me to keep watching for more signs of their true speed :D

A weird "tell" I started noticing back when I first started playing bar tournaments was normally the guy that's an hour early that's just sitting at the bar playing the video game when everyone else is practicing was the guy to watch out for.

Most B and below players seem to always have a tell that once you find it you'll know when they are gonna miss without even looking at where they are aiming or being close enough to tell they are off aim.

Beyond that it's just the way a good player carries themselves that makes it obvious they know what they are doing. Just like they say about fighters and killers it's the quiet ones to watch out for.

Shit, the gig is up lol.
I love the megatouch.

Good observation. Some of my buddies, if they take more than X amount of time, they're no threat to make it. Or they tap their bridge hand finger nervously during practice strokes. Or they get up off it more than once.

MAN!thats a nice fish!, Backyard? huh?

I'm getting the itch already! I'm lucky to live in a nice part of PA with a few good streams around like the little lehigh, french creek, the breeches, sulfer creek.

Here's a largemouth just under 6lbs I caught last year at Greenlane resovoire in my friends boat. So to pay him back I am going to teach him to flyfish :)

have fun,

G.

NICE!!!!!!!! We don't get much bass fishing here in the gem state but the trout and pike are great. The one in the pic is from no farther than 30 feet from the back deck at my house. The world record cutbow was caught just down the road from me. The one in the pic i caught on a size 18 royal pattern with the old perrine auto reel i have been using since i was 8 yrs old lmao

Gotta continue the thread hijack a little longer...

Here's a little minnow from my backyard, a wee bit of what we like to call "Battenkill Gold". This brownie was close to 22" and went almost 5 pounds. Not the biggest fish I've landed on the 'Kill, but pretty sweet to take her on top with a size 14 rusty spinner just as dark was approaching.

nice catch..I saw that an thought about my younger years in
northern Idaho..still do a little bass fishing on the snake around
lewiston an Asoten area when I visit my sister.

Steamboat area in Oregon was the last fishing I did..

I sort of agree..but a "Hustler" will intentionally dirty up the cue tip ferrule and grind away on the chalk to deceive? At least I would...if I were a "Road Player"?

I don't even notice the cue or case a guy uses..as flashy as it may be...

Show me your Snooker pooch:D

Or they get up off it more than once.

That's funny cause I've noticed it's the people that once down try to move around instead of getting back up that miss. Me I've gotten back up 3 times on an almost straight in shot before with my opponent looking at me like " ****er just shoot it! "

With exceptions like Cliff, Corey or Mike.

With the explosion of all the different leagues and tons of league players all around I do not think much about equipment as pretty much everyone has the gear. I did carry two cases at one point depending on the purpose of playing in public--one was just plain jane 2 cue black one.

I do always wonder when I see an unknown player walk in with the single tube black case and a pretty plain sneaky. :)

Sounds like we have several Idaho boys here I grew up on the Selway river and Kamiah area. I spent lots of time on the St. Joe river in St. Maries too. Still live in Idaho but now in Pocatello area. Miss the Northern part of our state though.
