Getting beat by the table conditions

Well, like it or not, Lady Luck plays a huge role in bar pool. I've learned to accept it from the start. I try not to get mad if my opponent lucks 2 balls in with one shot, cause I often luck in 3 in the following turn  Speaking of luck, I actually built my whole playing style around "getting lucky". I've learned most shots, deflections, certain areas where you need to deliver power blows etc. to increase the chances of lucking something in when a better player or bad table conditions don't leave you a good shot. It may seem unreliable at first, but after I practised it, I can say that in nearly two thirds of my matches I somehow "got lucky". In bar pool, luck can also be skill

Careful, your tells are showing.

According who?

'Pool' doesn't have standards in place for anything from speed of cloth, size of pockets, .COR of the rails and so on.

What makes a table 'legal' for play? Where in the record books going back thru time are the specific table 'specs' given for any record currently held?

There may but.....I can't hardly think of another sport where even the specifics of the "goal" itself are not defined in some manor.

:grin-square:

I kind of look at it like this, if every bar was forced to conform to certain standards and tolerances of pool tables less bars would have them. I prefer the nice diamond or GC 9 footer, but I will take what I can get.

And those of us without pool halls around have to. It is always fun watching someone used to a 9-footer miss side pocket shots on a bar box that they're normally used to making.

Those words you labeled red are showing what?

Ever think about how children always act like their parents don't know what's going on? You know, how their parents don't know their 'tells' or how to hide evidence.

Well, here's a few things I noticed that you may want to change the next time you 'go fishing'..

1. You can't keep posting in the same retentive style if you want people to think your new identity is a different person.

2. Don't post the exact same type of material.

3. Don't use key words or phrases, such as 'power blow'. It's a dead giveaway for the fact that you like to rename things.. to stupid things.

4. You have a repeated history of directly ignoring or sidestepping questions that you don't want to answer. It's very obvious for anybody that's noticed it.

This internet thing has been around a long time and you're not the first person to go 'incognito' without changing anything but a name. Maybe you're just PocketPoint with an agenda that's set to piss people off because not enough people have ever taken you seriously.

I get so tired of hearing people say "the table plays the same for both of us". I'd say, those that really believe that, don't play very well to start with. I just came back from the pool room. A friend called, had a little time to kill, and wanted to knock them around with someone. So, we played a couple of short races on the 9' table.

Granted, I haven't been playing much on a 9' table lately, but I noticed right off the bat that things weren't right. Got way too much draw on the cb, and had to fight to get any follow most of the time. Yet other times, follow worked right.?? Nothing was consistent. You'd know your aim was dead on, yet you would overcut the ball.

After a couple of short sets, I showed him something. I lined up the balls on the rail, and laid my cue on top of them. The cb was over 3/32" smaller than the other balls. Two of the balls were about a 1/16" smaller than the others, and a third was close to that. And, obviously, the balls were not really round anymore.

Now, if my opponent is shooting the small cb at a larger ball, but has a fairly straight shot at it, no problem. If I have the same balls, but a good cut on it, guess what? Things aren't equal anymore. Plus, if ones skill is better, but you have to use crappy equipment so the extra edge the better player has is gone, how can that be equal? Crappy equipment will always give the lower player an advantage because where he couldn't do certain things anyways, now the better player can't do them either until he gets time to figure out the table and adjust to it.

Having balls all different sizes is just plain terrible management. No excuse for it in any place that wants to call themselves a pool hall.

Wait, wait, wait. We're really gonna go through this again? Calling a very strong shot a "power blow" can truly piss people off  And when exactly did I skip answering questions? Ask me whatever you want (except my personal information) and I'm gonna answer you here and now. Btw I think this is the guy you're looking for so for the last time, leave me alone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kkjopqJhZE

No, it's the intentional renaming of things to something a child would say.. that kind of retarded stuff tends to piss people off when you do it over and over. Let me help you get your next one.. you can rename the 'break shot' to the 'big slam hit hard'.

We'll go through this every time you pull this little attention-getting bit.

I'm going to go home and work on my Big Slam Hit Hard! Lol too funny.

I'm gonna rename you "Persistent Trolling Kid".

I'm thinking about adding the "10 best ways to ignore forum trolls" part.

That's a good idea. So good, in fact, that I think you should drop what you're doing and start your manual immediately. So important that you shouldn't come back until you're done.

bar league

My home bar has a table so nice everything rolls to the center so no slow rolling. The one end of the table has a 2 by 6 under it because the floor is so unlevel. The one side the rails are not true one sticks out enuff to get the ball if you have to run the rail past the side pocket and one of those racks that you can never get a tight rack off of. It's a great place to play.

I play on an 8-ball bar box league here on Monday nights. Its a travelling league where you play at several different locations. So, last night we get to this bar and the table conditions are horrendous! Mud ball....table unlevel...dirty balls...etc. I realize all of this going into the gate, so I shoot my normal game. During my first game, I have a nice run going and I have to take a ball down a rail two diamonds out from the pocket. I slow rolled it and the ball tapered off and didn't go in the pocket. Now this just messed up my break and run out...so I'm pissed. I let the table get the best of me and I dogged my next 3 shots (in this same game mind you). I find it very difficult to play consistently when I get screwed over by the table conditions. How do you all adjust your game (and mindset) to play on subpar conditions?

u have to shoot the balls harder stun 2 ajust 4 speed

Thanks for the posts everyone...I've played on so many different tables before and I know how to adjust accordingly. I think the reason I got so flustered was because I'm really trying to get more serious about my pool game and when you practice and get beat by the table, it is so damn frustrating. I had multiple opportunities to capitalize on the game I was playing against my opponent, I was just more focused on the thought of me getting screwed over....not my next shot. I'm working on trying to keep my composure and stay focused even when something bad happens....like Efren.

Carry a deck of cards to level the table - this isn't that difficult.
Hit the Cue ball corner to corner slowly and use the cards to adjust.
Have a screwdriver or sockets in your car to tighten rails, you can fix a lot of shitty playin tables in a few minutes and there's a chance the owner may buy you a beer:thumbup:
