I get so tired of hearing people say "the table plays the same for both of us". I'd say, those that really believe that, don't play very well to start with. I just came back from the pool room. A friend called, had a little time to kill, and wanted to knock them around with someone. So, we played a couple of short races on the 9' table.
Granted, I haven't been playing much on a 9' table lately, but I noticed right off the bat that things weren't right. Got way too much draw on the cb, and had to fight to get any follow most of the time. Yet other times, follow worked right.?? Nothing was consistent. You'd know your aim was dead on, yet you would overcut the ball.
After a couple of short sets, I showed him something. I lined up the balls on the rail, and laid my cue on top of them. The cb was over 3/32" smaller than the other balls. Two of the balls were about a 1/16" smaller than the others, and a third was close to that. And, obviously, the balls were not really round anymore.
Now, if my opponent is shooting the small cb at a larger ball, but has a fairly straight shot at it, no problem. If I have the same balls, but a good cut on it, guess what? Things aren't equal anymore. Plus, if ones skill is better, but you have to use crappy equipment so the extra edge the better player has is gone, how can that be equal? Crappy equipment will always give the lower player an advantage because where he couldn't do certain things anyways, now the better player can't do them either until he gets time to figure out the table and adjust to it.
Having balls all different sizes is just plain terrible management. No excuse for it in any place that wants to call themselves a pool hall.
