Hoppe cues

Can anyone tell me what is meant by a Hoppe or a Hoppe style cue when the cues being referenced are clearly not the original old Hoppe/Titleist cues? The taper on the butt end looks similar to the Hoppe cue that came with my Gold Crown.

Thats it???? Thank you for the answer. I thought it was maybe the dimensions or something. Is the white ring anything other than visual thing?

I dont want to start another thread on this, but I have a 2 piece Hoppe Titleist, the one thats signed Willie Hoppe. If I have that cue restored so it looks nice does that affect any value it may have, even if something happens to the signature? The black Willie Hoppe Brunswick Profesional sticker is still intact but the blue one is missing. I would like to have cue refinished and a new shaft made for it so I can use cue.

TomHay...By what I understand, Rambo worked for Brunswick for some time when they were selling the Titlist and Hoppe cues. He also customized some of them as well. That is the short story version. There is a lot of more history that could be discussed that has been done in other threads.

Fastone371...But yes basically, the white ring on the but of some cues is referred to as a Hoppe ring. As far as the value of your cue and/or having it refinished, I don't know.

I personally have 2 old Hoppe Professional cues, neither with the Hoppe ring. These were the Brunswick version of a 2 piece Titlist. One is a blue label from the late 50's to mid 60's model. The other is a black label from the late 60's. I will soon be getting them converted to a modern cue. This involves cutting and lengthening the butt. Then turning down the cue butt and forearm, thus removing the weight stamp and signature. Replacing the brass joint with either stainless steel or a sleeved ivory joint. I will also have new shafts built as the old ones are warped.

If It were me and I had an original ivory Hoppe ring cue, I would have Scott Sherbine at Proficient Billiards refinish it. There are decals available to replace the damaged one. Scott does GREAT work. He refinished and old Joss West Merry Widow for me a couple of years ago.

Your blue label isn't missing - there never was one.

IIUC - Black label Hoppes weren't made by Brunswick - they were made
by Adam Cues in Japan.

Restoration and Value:

Like so many things - it depends. Some people collect Hoppes and would
consider a restored one to be less desireable than 'as found'. Other people
are only interested in having a Hoppe converted, so restoration would be
pointless to them. IMHO - the rest of the cue buying world would prefer
a nice new shiny restored Hoppe - but probably not as much increase in
market value as the cost of the restoration. If you are keeping the cue for
yourself, market value means less.

BTW - not to nit pick - but if you put an "e" in Titlist, it's a golf ball:)

The titlist/titelist thing is very common. As far as bad spelling goes, I
probably could take the title.:)
