Will Schon shafts fit on any 5/16x14 piloted butt?

I have a Mcdermott cue with a piloted 5/16x14 joint on it.

What are the odds that a Schon shaft will fit on my Mcdermott cue?

I have added a picture of what the joint of my Mcdermott cue looks like.

The only thing I am really worried about is that the pilot on the Schon shaft will be too big (because I know that the pilot on Schon shafts are pretty big, much bigger than a Joss pilot for example), so it might not screw in perfectly flush with the butt.

I am not sure if I was using the word "pilot" correctly, so I hope that most of you understand what I meant by that.

Thanks for your help.

The short answer is odds are no. Pilot is one factor, ID and OD of the threads could also be different and still be 5/16x14.

I am sad to hear that. So what about a Joss shaft? Would a Joss shaft probably work on the butt? Thanks for your help.

Maybe someone in your local area, a league player maybe, might have a Schon for you to try. Try a cuemaker, he'll be able to answer your questions with certianty

The brass pilot/nubbin ID could be machined to fit, and the threads fit most 5/16-14 pins.
The joint diameter is probably close, so it could be made to fit nicely.
One of my newer Schon shafts came from the factory with a smaller brass nubbin, it fits a lot of cues and it's a good one, so I kept it.

Take it to a cuemaker and see what he can do.
A friend has a cue we call the Sho-tinez because it is a Schon shaft made to fit a 3/8-12 Ernie Martinez pin.

The joss shaft is almost identical except its brass insert is smaller and I think a little shorter. I have both and I used to have a Jackson cue with the same screw. The joss fit but the schon wouldn't work on the Jackson hope that helped.

I had a few older Schons and Josses....Joss shafts would fit on Schon butts...
...the Schon shafts wouldn't fit on Joss butts.
It's a machining tolerance thing.....

So I guess that the Schon shafts are made in a unique way so they will only fit on Schon butts. Was it because of the pilot being too big on the Schon shaft, or other reason? I wonder if that would be a very expensive fix, to get a Schon shaft to fit flush with a Mcdermott 5/16x14 stainless steel butt. I know that I am going off topic, but is the hit of Schon much different then Joss? Thanks.

This is my experience as well. If you get a generic 5/16-14, like an OB or Predator, it will fit on a Schon, Joss, etc. But the Schon usually won't fit on other cues.

You could have the pilot on the Schon machined down to fit the pilot on your McD butt... If you don't care about changing it. That way you'd still have most of the same playing characteristics of the Schon shaft.

No, the problem was in the threads...Schon had a finer tolerance...it would
take a machinist to explain it.
The newer Schons do not have this problem,in my experience.....
...they seem to intermix okay.

Schon and Joss hit very similar...like Richard Black cues.

a person with a tap can probably have it work in a minute
that is if it doesn't fit now

best advice ,try one first then find out if you need a tap

The reason a Joss fits a Schon is because Joss and MOST cues that use the 5/16-14 pin is because the inserts are drilled with an F drill which is .257,and tapped with a normal tap.

The Schon pin is made undersized at the top and bottom of the threads, hence the fit. This is why aftermarket shafts will a Joss or a Schon every time.

It doesn't work in reverse,a Schon shaft will screw onto a Joss,Scruggs,Black Boar, etc, about 2-3 turns and lock up because their pin is cut to the true 5/16,even though it's the same thread form.

Then, even if you get it to screw in,the typical brass insert is .500 wide, and the Schon is usually right at .530. Tommy D.

Thanks for all of your replies. So that sounds like 2 different issues that I would have with a Schon shaft fitting on my Mcdermott cue. Does anyone know how much most cue makers would charge to do this kind of repair? Is it is very difficult job for a repair person? Thanks for your help.

It's a very small job for an expert with good equipment....
...I've had 3 shafts done while I wait.
