Basically how you "handicap" gambling games in pool.

This sounds good! What do you mean by "how to match up" and "weight"?

Basically how you "handicap" gambling games in pool. There's a variety of ways to do this and a handicap is also called "weight".....it's sometimes "heavy". :)

Matching up is another way of saying "negotiating a game".

There's an art to matching up and some people use it to win a LOT of money gambling. The proposition games and bets are a bit more advanced way of doing this. I only disclose these things in private, out of respect for other players that still gamble for a living.

So.....Euless? Hurst?? North Arlington???

Geez, why all the secrecy??? Couldn't you at least divulge what city it's in?

Maniac (Holy Spygate, Batman!!!)

When Dick Chaney plays here they make us call it "An Undisclosed Location" ;)

It's a cool little town called Watauga, by Hurst, Euless and Haltom City, which are called the "Mid Cities". I'm used to most people coming in from the DFW Airport and they usually don't know the difference between any of these cities.

I see you're from Texas, just not sure what part of Texas you're from, it's a BIG state.

A pool degenerate would have to be a maniac to live in a town with no pool halls.

Maybe I'll come over to your "neck of the woods" one of these days. I think you said you live in North Carolina and that's where I have to go to interview Earl Stricklands Ex Wife about the Million Dollar Challenge Win.

I'll let you know, it may be July when I can make it over that way, I also have people wanting me to stop by Chattanooga, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Jackson on the way.

Play Well,

CJ

CJ:

If you make it to NC in July, come check out Breaktime Billiards in Wilmington...First Tuesday of the month is an open 9 ball tournament, with some strong players...lots of potential customers, plenty of action...last time I was in there, Mike Davis swung through and taught everyone a lesson.

The object ball acts as merely a REFLECTION of what we do to the cue ball.

I agree with the shorter sessions CJ. I did the three hour sessions which were just about right for me. You taught me in a very systematic & methodical approach, giving me additional information when I was ready for it. After a few days at home digesting everything that you taught me, it kind of fell into place. I began seeing how to create the angles, and how to employ these created angles into the 3 part pocket system.

Just from the last session that we had I can see a noticable improvement in my game. Absolutely Amazing.

"CJ is The Teacher"

Yes, 3-4 hours over 3-4 days seems to be the best formula recently. I have a guest in town experiencing a 10 hour Training in 2 days and we did the first half yesterday. He's an advanced player so I customized a session to address his stroke power, and accuracy first. This takes some effort and patience, however, when the break through is produced it makes increasing playing levels much easier in a reasonable time frame.

This is something that most players will benefit right away because I use the Sword to show how to keep the cue perfectly on the best Track/Slot for your personal body type. Also demonstrating how the Forearm/Wrist/Fingers join synergistically to provide instant power/speed/accuracy which is the fundamental key to playing ALL pool shots.

He will be a bit sore after yesterday's lesson, he wanted the "accelerated course" so it was more physical than one of my normal sessions.

Today we'll get more into how his new stroke applies to the game he prefers. I will have him do a drill out of the BANKING T.I.P.S. video that aligns the pool cue TIP to the Diamonds in such a way that it becomes instinctive. The only way this happens is through an amplified experience and banking balls without the cue ball teaches this immediately. This is also how to fine-tune kicking abilities right away as well.

Then, once there's an amplified awareness and feel for the cue ball it will be time to move on to position play and Exactly how zones are created to increase margin of error (this applies to ALL games). Not only do we want to increase ball pocketing margin of error with techniques like TOI and 3 Part Pocket System, it's also essential to do this same thing with position play using zones that connect to Diamonds on the Table.

The Diamonds are there for reasons that are rarely talked about and can change the perception of the Game very quickly - they open up a new dimension regarding how someone plays Shape, Banks, and "Aims". An index relationship between the TIP and the Diamonds is something that's done at the highest levels and I wouldn't want to describe the system (in writing), it's something that must be experienced or seen to understand. Many players have no idea this even exists, and it's a huge advantage.

The object ball acts as merely a REFLECTION of what we do to the cue ball.(that's why I'm only "aware" of the object ball when I play, freeing my mind to focus on the cue-ball and TIP) , if the cue ball spins right, it causes the object ball to move and spin to the left, high on the cue ball puts low on the object ball, low, puts high, etc. etc. The Key is the Cue Ball.

Yes, matching up well used to be worth a lot of money, however, the gambling scene in pool has pretty much went away these days. The handicap system's are very elaborate in pool and only a few players know all the "trick games" of the past. Playing "one-handed" is one of the best games for winning money off average players, and there's plenty of others.

I traveled for a couple years on and off with Weldon Rogers who was one of the greatest one-handed players of all time. I could tell many stories of watching Weldon operate with the trick games and we always averaged at least a thousand a day when we were on the road. We won a couple scores that were classic in Tennessee and North Carolina, those were some amazing places to gamble.Kentucky was too.

One of those gamblers was "Sharkey" in Albemarle NC......I'm not sure if he's still around, but that's one of the places I got robbed at gunpoint. We ended up taking off a few of the biggest gamblers around that area, after facing the "stick up man" a few times you learn to leave the area for a few days after the be wins, or they come after you. ;)

The one thing that still isn't understood these days is if a player needs the "weight" at the beginning or the end of the rack to have the best game. hmmm,

from the Dippy Dave bet we made

Well CJ, here on AZ Billiards, you've shown us the patience of JOB and that's not the pool room in Nashville, TN. It's the guy in the bible who was tested many times, yet he maintained his composure.

When patience and tolerance is combined with experience and intelligence it produces wisdom.

I'm sure anyone would improve their pool game under your tutelage.

Thanks, Joey, 'The Game is Your Teacher'

I'll be down to see you one of these days, I still owe you a Lesson from the Dippy Dave bet we made a couple of years ago. Did you think I would forget? ;)

Dang. You DFW players got it good. Sounds like an offer that can't be beat.

I'm going to immediately start squirreling money away when I get back from Tunica. I gotta get down to one of those lessons at the facility.

Can we get some more feedback from you players that have worked with CJ? How long did it take for the lesson to click for you?

Fathomblue,

I finished my 5th 3 hr. class with CJ on the 18th of May. We did 2 days a week for 2 weeks, then the last class just reviewed and put things together. CJ took me from the very basic of fundamentals. I had to forget everything that I thought I knew about shooting pool and start over. You have to commit yourself into "emptying your cup" and learning a completely different game. I have a new stance, grip, stroke, and now a mental aspect (the "feel" that CJ talks about) is starting to grow. Between lessons I would practice what was being taught, then the next lesson, CJ would fine tune my advancement then move to the next area of adjustment. There is a natural method to CJ's teaching ability, and he can pinpoint any inconsistency's immediately by watching you go through your routine. As he is teaching you the proper body positions and movements he also talks about how the mental aspect connects to each movement. I know without a doubt that he can and will improve anyone's game, no matter what your current level of play is.

I practice anywhere from 1 to 2 hrs. per day and I can see my game improving daily. I walk away from my table smiling each and every day. I have no regrets spending the few hours that I did with CJ.

Thank you for responding, Yankee.

Even tho I'm "only" about 9 hours away from DFW, I'm probably going to have to see if I can split it up into either two, long 6-hour-ish sessions.........or maybe, just maybe three shorter 4-hour-ish ones.

I live in very north central Arkansas. On a Thursday evening in the fall, I might drive a couple of hours to my brother's place, just outside of Little Rock and get a good night's sleep. That would put me 5 1/2 hours from the facility (based on Mapquest to Watauga). If I got a good start, I could be there early Friday afternoon and try to get in the first lesson that night. BUT, I'd hate to end up being tired as hell and absorbing what will probably be a complete teardown of my fundamentals. If I felt good, tho, then I could go ahead and put in the time on Sat. and then maybe early-ish on Sunday, to spread out the lesson over 3 days. That would probably be a pretty long drive back home on Sunday night....complete with me taking Monday off from work. :boring2:

So, yeah, I guess taking a Friday and a Monday off, while cramming in as many hours as I can afford and handle over the course of 3 days with a legend/champion would probably make for a helluva weekend.

My only other probable alternative would be to take one day off from work and try to smash everything in over 2 days. I know I'd love to get that much table time in, but I'm kinda scared that it might be overload.

Like I said, I'm pretty jealous of you DFW guys. I guess it could be worse, tho. At least I don't live 22 hours away or something.

And I'm pretty much restricted to driving. It's a 3 hour drive to the nearest airport. Then a couple of hours of standing around and waiting to board. An hour flight. An hour to get out of the airport. Time getting a rental car. Blah, blah, blah. Might as well just drive there and cut out all the possible logistical nightmares that could crop up.

Anyway, Yank, I hope you keep us updated on your lessons and how much you're improving.

Are you in a league? If so, what was your ranking before you started these lessons? Have your regular pool shooting friends and opponents noticed the difference in your fundamentals and style of play.....not to mention the results?

Also, did you have CJ film you? Did you keep a copy of the practice sessions?

I am in a 3 person per team league. There is no sanctions or rankings, just kinda of a good ol'e boy's league. 61 players all looking to get out of the house for the evening. The league moderators keep up with team stats along with individual stats. I am not sure where I was when I first checked, but I have moved up to #38 hitting a little over 50% of my games. Most of my home playing is done alone except when my step son comes by and plays with me. He has noticed a huge improvement in my game. At first he thought that my psr was a little crazy, only because I was still thinking about it and going through it in a step by step process. Now it is smooth and pretty much thoughtless. My wife sits and watches me practice quite often and she is impressed, and during one of my lessons, CJ said "man you even look like a pool player now". What a confidence booster that was.

I hope that you can make it down to visit with CJ, what a rewarding experience. And yes, you would want to be fresh during his sessions, they can become pretty intense, not to mention the huge amount of information that is given to you. Also, CJ has the best customer service around. He never lets a question or a problem go unanswered. You can call, e-mail, use this forum, whatever. He has helped me through e-mail and pm's from this forum quite often.

boy you got this right. I went up (I'm in San Antonio) and took a 5 hour lesson. Some of the best money I've ever spent. My game has gone up just from that lesson. Hoping to get back up in the fall. Your absolutely right about his customer service. He has answered and explained every question I could think of via many different ways. He even emailed me the other day to check up on my status. The feeling you get when you take a lesson from him is not that he is instructing you on a one time deal but rather you have just gained a coach !

Hey there H. we did have an intense 5 hour session, a lot of the credit goes to the SWORD, once someone experiences the "cutting edge" they can not stroke the pool cue the same again. I've spent a lot of time with that blade "sharpening my skills".

Hearing your feedback makes teaching very worthwhile. When I retired from playing professional pool in 99 I devoted much of my time to running businesses and teaching/training martial arts with my Instructor now of 25 years. He helped trained me in a way that I will always be grateful for.

Through his instruction I learned how to be my best and he guided me and pushed me to levels that I could not reached on my own. He could see things in me that I could not see in myself because he had the perspective of "looking in, rather than looking out". Any time I got out of sync in my life, training or pool game I could always go to my teacher, and after a few sessions I was right back on track.

This was very valuable in my competitive life as well as my personal well being physically and mentally. I've had many other teachers in my life that helped me reach certain goals and overcome other weaknesses and to be able to pass this knowledge on through pool is very rewarding for me.

Teaching for me is a way to "give back" to my past teachers, my Life, and even to the Game it's self, the Game of pool has also taught me some very important lessons and without that Game, I would not have "real eyesed" the experiences and formed the relationships world-wide that I have....I'm grateful and thanks to all my past and present teachers, family, friends and especially the wisest teacher of all.......the Game.
