The Players Themselves Might Bring Down Bonus Ball

In only the first week of the BB season already we are seeing some teams and some players almost fighting with one another and captains acting like boot camp cadre. I think the first thing that needs to be done is lose the captains, as most pool players don't like taking orders or told how to shoot a shot. If this stuff keeps up by the 6th week they might as well bring in a cage. Like what happened to the other tours led by players it will destruct. Johnnyt

Because the viewing public really hate drama and the risk of arguments spilling over?

There's a reason Earl Strickland is the only pool player more than 0.001% of British people know. It's not because of his standoffish, reserved manner.

We shall see how this all plays out if BB lasts six months...Earl will not be there. Johnnyt

He'll be there. Heck they should even script in some controversy if they have to.

First off if they want TV to get involved Earl is perfect. Your average joe doesnt want to watch robots with no personality play pool. Drama like last night is exactly what bonus ball wants. And second if they want to go with the league/team idea the captain will stay. Every sports team has a captain, and every pool league team has a captain as well. I thought what happened with earl and JJ was great.

I can't believe Earl, of all people, is going to support Bonus Ball, a Canadian enterprise, while it tramples the very American promoters who have kept pool alive and well in these United States. That's not the Earl I know. Somebody needs to enlighten him on what's happening to Greg Sullivan's Southern Classic, how Bonus Ball deliberately, with malice aforethought, scheduled their events on top of the Southern Classic, while leaving their schedule empty for the Ultimate 10-Ball Championship, allowing players to attend one and not the other.

Both tournaments, Ultimate and Southern Classic, run back to back -- IN THE SAME LOCATION, SAME TOWN, SAME HOTEL. Why would Bonus Ball schedule hurt Greg Sullivan in this manner? It's disgusting.

We've given you a few sports --- this is just one more ;)

When it comes down to it, pool players are in it for themselves and really dont care about anyone else. They have a mentality to look out for yourself and thats it. And as long as a weekly paycheck is coming in from BB these guys are going to be on board. Its a shame but thats the reality of the situation. Im sure Earl is well aware of what is going on, but at the end of the day he has to do whats in his best interest.

Earl is probably more pro-American than I am. :o

Just ask him sometime what he thinks. I'm sure you'll get an earful.

Well my friend who loves the DCC and the Southern Classic is a bonus ball player and you know a fun fact he won 2 out of 3 events and the all around at Southern and didn't get free entry or room for winning he has a 6 month old baby a significant other and her 13 year old brother who's mother passed away and has no one but him to count on so if someone told you that you will get a weekly paycheck what would you have done...

I'd quit playing pool and get a real job to support my family.

The reality is pool as a profession is not conducive to today's economy. Even the $900 per week after taxes doesn't leave one much to live off of -- and that's if you're single. You have expenses, rent, food, et cetera. What happens if your teeth hurt and you need IMMEDIATE dental care?

In case you haven't notice, the majority of aging pool players have no family, no children, no loved ones surrounding them. When you get sick, go broke, or get old and can't run racks, you find out how many friends you have in this pool world.

I personally believe pool today is a rich man's high. If a player can get a corpulent stakehorse to support them in exchange for friendship, then, yes, professional pool pays. Otherwise, it's time to hang up the cue stick and get job that will keep one's family intact.

Who is your friend, by the way? Two out of three events is strong. I should know the name, I guess.

I have always respected your post and have no intentions of arguing but I don't think you have to hang it up when there is a chance for you to do what you love so far he justin hall is doing just fine and he is going to play both events. We talked last night and both agree that bonus ball could oc accomadated the schedule better but he Iis going to do what he has to.

I'm sure ALL the BB players know what's happening Jen

... seems they all think of themselves first, the sport second or third

who woulda thunk that?

Ok... Who has Jam

Jam.. It is nice to see that you have finally seen the light. As I have discussed in earlier threads you have to do what you have to do.

So what made you change your mind?

Don

Justin Hall? Did he win two out of three events at the Derby? Good for him. That is a strong pool feat for sure!

I am sorry to learn about his struggles with the new baby and family to support. Tennessee, if that's where he's from, may not have as many job opportunities as, say, New York City or Chicago or Los Angeles. So I can empathize with his stance on grabbing a sure thing.

He's young, which is in his favor. If and when Bonus Ball implodes, he will have to figure out where to go from there. It is always good to have a Plan B in any endeavor.

I hope Justin enjoyed that money he did win at the Derby City Classic and that it brought his family some relief.

That looks like a nice number there he's holding. That money he pocketed is the result of Greg Sullivan's Derby City Classic. Wouldn't it be a shame if the Derby City Classic ceased to exist?

He won 2 of 3 at the southern classic and the all around, the derby bank ring game and 2nd in banks at derby. Unfortunately he is one of the kids who has played since he was young and has nothing to fall back on right now that will support his family so he is doing what he has to. I believe there a lot of players who do not respect the heritage of the game but he is not one of them. If all the talented players hung it up would there be anyone left to watch?

I must agree with you. American needs new blood to fill the void of those who have left the pool industry. Without them, American pool is dead. That is a very good point.

But is it fair to Justin Hall? I think he should definitely keep on, keeping on with his pool endeavors. I don't know how old he is, but if he's young, he should also consider a way to make money in a non-pool-related field.

The problem with pool is that even when you win big, you're so stuck from all the other events where you didn't win, place, or show. It's hard to accumulate a bankroll when you're solo like Justin. If he had a sponsor or backer, that would surely help.

There comes a time in a pool player's life when they must pick and choose what's more important: pool or family. It happens to all of them. I hope Justin makes the right decision and has the means to keep his head above water. He looks like a nice kid. :)
