Where to play in LA

That's kind of funny because you play at least 2 balls better than Danny yet he was man enough to try you with no spot till it was obvious he didn't stand a chance. On the other hand, one of the better players at "S.M.Billiards" graciously gave you 9/7 and you cried for more weight every game.

Well, since this has become a "public discussion" I want to say a couple of things:

First, I want to echo Jim's comments about SM -- I have been three or four times over the last few years. They always want to make a call and send in Richie or Wayne, but *no one* else will play.* I see the same guys every visit and I never get a game.

Second, IMO Richie is one of the better non-pro 1pocket players in the country. Jim can't win at 9-7, particularly on Richie's home track.

Third, Jim is good, fair action, and I will vouch for him on that.

I think I mixed you up...I'll be coming into LA later this week, from 8/8-8/11 (Thursday-Sunday).

Manila Billiards is definitely on the radar, as is Hard Times, or maybe Mr Lucky's for the 8-ball tourney.

As for balut, I came across a blog where the person described eating it for the first time. I don't know that I'm gutsy enough...literally!!! Here's the blog - http://www.deependdining.com/2005/09/balut-egg-of-darkness-pinoy-pinay.html

My friend had more or less the same reaction when he first ate balut; looks gruesome, tastes pretty good. Me? I couldn't get past the looks gruesome part.

If you're coming in this week then everything is in play for you.

You should lay off the California Cigaweed.

Rich gave me 10/7. I won one game every five. I quit around $200 down. So yea, I think I needed more weight.

I might be better than Danny but he did beat me once. We are around even on the money won/lost. My high game is pretty high, but my low end is equally bad. I lost on a bad night and won on a good night. If I knew I was on a good night I'd give Danny 9/7. He doesnt need to go around and tell people I'm some champ when I loose to all the better players. Hell, the last two times I went to plush pocket I got run over.

Let's get real. Danny is a C player and you are a B player. Danny played you without a spot till he realized he was out of your league. On the other hand, an A player gave you 10/7. I only watched a little of the first part, and it may be an anomaly, but you were crying for more weight from the get go. But, I understand, I'm not happy either when I realize I don't have a lock ;)

Earth to Lou,

The players at SM Billiards are mostly working stiffs who happen to love one pocket. There are no pros or real hustlers there. In fact, most of the guys are C players. There's a handful of B players and a couple of A players.

Now, there's been a recent trend of outside guys coming and bragging it up because the C players are a little shy (with good reason as champs are always showing up), but these same outside braggarts duck the B and A players. Most of the A players are known for giving more than generous spots. And, even though they are not pros, the A players (and some Bs) will play the likes of Orcullo, Biado, Pagulayan, Justin Hall, Sylver Ochoa, and Scott Frost.

As to your case, I saw you awhile ago lingering on the back tables at S.M. when Wayne and others were there who would have given you more than a fair spot. Seems like a lot of this complaining is by those who want to duck anybody but C players. ;)

To add to what jtompilot said...He is a nice guy, works a full time job, loves to play, loves to gamble, and plays pretty well, due to his own hard work. He doesn't whine or complain, is not a locksmith, and is always just looking for a fair game, wherever he travels. Like many have noted, action anywhere is not as easy to come by as it was 20-30 yrs ago. Keep having fun Jim!

"Except for the champions, everyone is scared to death to play anyone they don't know or they want so much weight you have no chance. I just spent most of the day at S.M.Billards and no one would play me. I play close to Danny's speed. He beat me once, the second time I won, the third time I was up a game he quit me. He wasn't stealing so he quit.

Doesn't anyone just was good even action?

Rant over".......

Wait Scott this guy has just denigrated my home room and I don’t care how nice of a guy he is he just said an idiotic thing that has no basis of fact.
For one thing we have a lot of B and C players who will play anybody a friendly game. John Henderson, One Pocket Ghost, Beau Runnigan, Kentucky Bill, Filipino Alex, Gus Briseno, Billy Palmer have all come in and got some fine action here from our B players. Some Champions as well. To say we are scared to death to play is luducrious or just pumping your own self up. Even one of our lady one pocket players gave Corey Deuel some action and he quit after one game.

And shame on you Lou, sure when Dennis Orcullo, Efren, Scott Frost, Sylver Ochoa, Kid Delicious, Jose Parica, Santos Sambajon, Carlos Biado, Justin Hall, etc come in sure we call our A team. They all got played here. But not you guys. If you feel slighted and ignored or feared you are always welcome to come in and play. But don’t go around saying we are scared of your ass.

Now Danny Shades has a lot of game and will play anybody once. If he feels he has a fair game he will bet 3 or 4 hundred beans a game. And he is in his 60’s. You can ask Fatboy about him. He wouldn’t let YOU steal when he recognized you were better than him.
Wayne and Rich are working men who have families to support. So are most of our guys here. Im very proud of the way they have conducted themselves in the way of the game. So for you to denigrate them is an affront.

So if you want “good even action” you can always get it no matter how much you cry that it aint fair when you get beat.
And last of all rod feel free to come in and say hello at House of Billiards in Santa Monica. You will have a good time and see some great pool and there is always someone here you can play for money, marbles, or chalk. But no one will denigrate you.

Must have been someone else.

In several visits I have never seen Wayne there and the only time I saw Richie there was after I'd been there all day and had to leave. We talked for a few minutes and I told him no one wanted to play and said, "I don't why. I guess they all think I'm a road player." He looked me at me and said, "You don't look or dress like a road player." He looked around the room at all the regulars and said, "I don't know what's wrong with these guys."

I'm not saying anyone is scared. All I said was: in several visits, like maybe a total of 20 sessions there over the last few years -- I have never gotten a game there. I often end up playing 3C with the billiard players.

On my last visit earlier this year, over a couple of days, I asked every guy in the room who looked capable if they wanted to play. No one did and I ended up playing 3C, again.

I am not casting aspersions on anyone. I'm just saying what happened.

I'm sorry for bashing your room. You have one of the nicest rooms anywhere. Everyone there is very nice.

I enjoyed playing Danny and Rich. Danny made many nice banks and played good shape. I dont think he's a C player, more like a B. I've talked with several players there and one of them said "Danny told him I was champion" and nobody would play me. That guy also told me Danny has got a lot better the last two years.

So OK, I'm a B+, sometimes I play like a C. I understand that I'm from out of town and everyone thinks I'm a road player. I play all over the country and I've been run over more times than anyone in the state of California. I've been to your room 10 times and played three players. I guess I'm lucky.

You have a nice room. I was a little upset that any possible action got knocked except for the Champs.

No one thinks you guys are "road players". If you think we think you are road players you have a bit of delusions of grandeur. Its pretty laughable as top road players and pros come in all the time and they will get games. Yes our top players end up playing them but many of the locals will get up and take a road test too. Even when Mika came in looking to mooch off some room rent he got action from no name guys..

Let me explain to you something about our room. Most of the guys are recreational players and this is why. They have money from their careers. Its a big town with big money and we got guys here that make a top pool players annual income look like a bad month.

The reason Im saying this is, one, they have their own businesses and they rarely get to play as often as they would like. and two, play because they love the game and want to play with people they can socialize with. So therefore like to play with people they enjoy and like. Perhaps you cant get a game because you are a stranger or the people that know of you don't like you. Its not because they are "scared" you can play. Youre not known for that. Time is precious and people want to spend it with people they like.

We don't roll out the red carpet for any tom, dick, and obnoxious. If you get out of hand we just let OMGWTF deal with you. She will set you straight. We don't have the time to pissant with tourists. This aint Hawaiil. But now that we know you are here on a friendly basis and would like to knock them around we can give you a beauty line up and you can pick who you want to play. But don't go around saying we are a bunch of ninnies shaking our knees when you walk through our portals.

And Pilot guy, for your information Danny Shades was being respectfull when he said",that guy can play" "He plays good.". He never said don't go playing you because you are a "champion". No one thought that anyway because Champions do get played here. Ask Efren and company whenever they come into town. Cause they are always calling up for any action. We got a chiropractor guy who plays a pretty sporty game that will play.

And if you can give Shades 9/7 on a good day you can beat 80% of the room. Cause not many can give him that weight. So if you ask someone to play and you can give Shades 2 balls and Shades gives him 2 balls. Shouldn't the guy ask for some weight or say I don't belong on the same table with you? Would you give the guy 4 balls? I don't think so. Arent pilots supposed to have logic and understand a bit of math? Never mind just tell me what route you fly and for what airlines. So I know what my options are.

So guys this is the way to handle it. Just come in and say I want to play one pocket. Is there anyone here that wants to play. Ill be here from x to x. I will not play this guy and this guy because they are "champions" and Im not but I will try to play anyone else. And hope that someone has the time or tolerance.

Actually I'm very good in math. And you have many nice customers, I've hung out and talked with some. I've played many of the top players you talk about and have donated plenty of money to them. I also work for a living and my job doesn't pay what people think. I just want play.

Opinions differ.

Have a nice day

Strange, John Henderson and the One Pocket Ghost (from Chicago) had no problem getting games at SM whenever they showed up. The top pros and road players get games at SM. The guy I saw who looked exactly like you would have had no problem getting a game that day. :( (Now, it may not be the case with you, but I have noticed a number of players showing up at SM who complain that they can't rob the C players but who make themselves scarce when the B or A players show up.)

You are obviously worked up and highly defensive about this topic, so I’ll make this short and sweet.

I have been a working guy/recreational player my whole life. Over the last few years I’ve had the chance to play at rooms in the areas of New Jersey, Boston, Lexington, Miami, Atlanta, Gulfport, New Orleans, Louisville, Dayton, Chicago, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Seattle. I‘m sure I’m forgetting a few, but that’s off the top of my head.

Without making an appointment or filling out an application form at the front desk I’ve almost always been able to get a $10, $20, or $40 game of 1pocket at all those locales just by asking another player in the room if they would like to play some.

Except for one place, in 20 visits. Like Jim said: it’s a nice room with nice people.

I guess it's just been my bad luck.

And for the record: I have gambled with pros; shortstops, and guys like me. I don't duck anyone when I'm visiting a room and will usually play whoever is available and take my chances. When I ask every player in a room to play I have no idea how they all play. I'm not looking to rob anyone, I'm just looking to play for a few hours and have a few yucks.

Demon maybe you might not know this but Jon H and the Ghost are highly respected one pocket players in their own right and are as good as road warriors.. They have much respect for the sanctity of the game as well as their opponents. They are very likable guys too.
If they win they don't brag and if they lose they wonder how they can improve their game. One thing is that they don't do is when they get beat they turn their back and refuse to shake their opponents hand after defeat. That's no class. Nor do they whine about the game when they are on the short end. They do their best.
Guys like that can get a game any time.

Worked up and defensive. That's a joke. The OP used the words "scared to death to play" so naturally Im going to come to defend my home turf. We mammals are built that way unless youre a slug you would know that. Then you come to his defense by alluding to the effect that people might mistake you for a "road player". Now I cant tell you what Rich actually thought of you when he said "I don't know whats wrong with these guys" but he might be thinking well "what might be wrong with you that no one wants to play you". That's Richs problem he is too nice of a guy to say what he really thinks. But I know he does love irony.

Billiards players will play you as they are a bunch of gentlemen but they are totally clueless when it comes to the pool forums but we pool players do have some clues dating back to the RSB days. Now please don't get worked up and defensive about that. But we know you and know who you are. We know youre not a road player. So there must be another reason besides the room is "scared" of you. And for $10,$20 or $40? I don't think so.

By the way did you ask Rich to play?.

Bottom line: always lots of guys in the room with expensive sticks but no play-ee in 20 visits :-) Not a problem for moi in many, many other rooms all across the country...

And as I said in a previous post, Richie came in after I had been there all day and was leaving. He asked me to play and I joked with him and said, "Hey, aren't you Wayne Pullen?" And he laughed and said, "Hell, no! He's OLD.'" And we had a good laugh and I told him I wish he'd come in a few hours earlier.

Yeah Im sure Rich had a good laugh. Hes heard that a lot.

I'll be in LA from Thursday-Sunday this week (sadly, for an uncle's funeral). Are there any good tourneys or pool rooms that I should check out on these days? I played at Hard Times when I was on vacation a couple months back during the day...didn't see much pool outside my own table.

I'd be happy to meet up with any AZB'ers for some drinks and light action

Thanks,

Rod

Sorry about your loss. I too loss someone dear to me recently. Come in to House of Billiards in Santa Monica and Ill buy you a drink. You'll enjoy it. Don't be too concerned of the expensive looking sticks you might see. Most of them bought from broke pool players. We know a good deal when we see one.

14.1, 9 ball, one pocket, banks, billiards, 8 ball, all played here. Take care pare
