Anyone else seem to have arm skid occasionally? Where your arm seems to react completely different from what you told it to do. Arm Skid.

It doesn't happen often but when it does it can cost you the set. I would like to know if anyone has a solution for this phenomenon.

WD-40? If you're fresh out you can substitue a vodka red bull.

Seriously tho, it's all muscle memory = perfect practice, right? I wonder if someone has ever developed some sort of pendulum practice device. Have a rigid brace from your hip to a sliding sleeve over your cue. = no more butt wiggle, just through and true.

Ok, I may be on crack.

The "Arm Skid" will usually happen when you are thinking about something (like your stroke) other than the aim.

I anticipate arm-skid, and am typically more taken aback by phantom "good strokes" that result in missed shots, over-run position, or both.

I'm terrible at pool.

LOL. Good point.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It does seem to happen when my thoughts get divided during delivery. I know I had a hard time trying to put the occurrence into words but with all the talk of ball skid lately I kinda liked the term.

Do you suggest to be thinking while playing, or not thinking at all? or not thinking while delivery the cue?

Ray

I lived alone for many years so I am quite familiar with "arm skid".
After meeting my current girlfriend, however, it seems to have all gone away.

Think I know exactly what you mean and randy's got it. Basically you're subconsciously worried
about something. Your arm freaks out midstroke... either trying to steer the ball or just suddenly
running out of gas (or overamping it) because you're not really committed to your gameplan.

Balls skid when they are dirty ... maybe you need a shower?

Originally I thought it may be my armpit sticking to my side :shocked2: ever so slightly during deliver, but I ruled that out with proper clothing.

Yes! I think sometimes we are not 100% committed and try to go ahead and shoot anyway and arm skid occurs. Like a conflict from the brain.

We always used to call it "the shot went off in my hand". Even drawing a clear picture of what you want to do sometimes results in this situation. ( If I'm right about what you mean).

I believe that we amateurs with less than a zillion hours a month on the table, try as we might to mentally picture the shot before we get down, sometimes fall victim to ever so slight changes in plan when we do get down and see the shot from a different angle.

Maybe a bit of a thought about optional speed choices, english choices, even shot choices inhibit our focus and ... boom, " the shot goes off in our hand"

Great thread and a great coinage: arm skid.

For me it's the dreaded elbow drop which often results in a miscue. The tip goes right over the top of the ball. And I agree -- it is a matter of letting extraneous thoughts interfere with execution.

By-the-way, what exactly is arm skid? Someone mentioned dropping the elbow during the stroke. Is that it? :)

Ray,

I call it leprosy in my arm. I'll mis a shot & feel it in my arm. It's like my arm had a mind of it's own but obviously my arm & my brain had two different things in their minds.

I find that it usually happens early when I am playing & it gets fixed real quick. I think it does have something to do with focus. It's almost like our body or arm is telling us, "oh, so you think you can take us for granted, well guess what, you can't.'

It can be a shock to find out that you have 'leprosy' in your shooting arm.

I hope you find the cure as quickly as I do.

Best Regards & Wishes,
Rick

Ray,

I did not. Is that true? If so that is too weird.

Anyway, from now on when I get that feeling in my arm, I'm going say that I've got 'Big Truck Disease'.

All the Best,
Rick

I don't know if this will help anyone, but along the lines of the OP's intent...

I use this "mantra" approach. Bad negative sh1t always tries to jump into everyone's mind at times.

I pick out two keywords. Be it over a golf shot, a pool shot, or bowling, or having sex with a chipmonk - I block out the negative by repeatedly saying to myself the 2 keywords (I can't handle 3, I confuse my elf)

Yesterday, in an important American Rotation match, before the match started I COMMITTED to the 2 word mantra "smooth and through". I surely said it to myself 100 + times. It calmed me at every turn. It blocks out negativity. It's a very simple, effective tool. Hope that helps.

TRY IT if you will.
