The REAL problem with pool

I hesitate to tell this story but what the heck. "Ladies Night" in 2013 means something different than it once did.

CJ, You will just love this experience. Some time ago, I ran a promo directed at women. The LGTB crowd took notice and they ran an ad in their underground publication to meet at my place because after all, we were giving the place away to women. My place was inundated with fat, ugly, mean, and nasty women. I put an end to it quickly.

Note to Self,

Leave Paul off the advertising team. He will understand.
code words if it comes up.......the road to hell is paved with good intentions.....lol

I will add something more to this. In Pennsylvania, it is now against the law to run a ladies night in an establishment that serves alcohol. Not only will an establishment hear from the State Liquor Control Board, they will also hear from the Local Human Relations Board on account of sex discrimination. The concept of luring young, attractive women, and using them as bait to attract men, is an old one. These are not business friendly times.

The disparaging remarks were directed at a local organization and not in the broad sense. There were no men in the group (no payers) and they filled my place up! They paid for nothing and spent nothing. They complained about everything and treated my staff poorly. Who needs or wants this?

I know of a place that once ran a bikini pool tournament. Can you just imagine? I won't do that.

How is this for an idea on generating extra income?

Why not have monthly membership for two classes a week? So, for example, $100 a month your customers could participate In a group class every Tues and Thurs. The class could be 1 1/2 hr long and organized in the following manner.

15 min.warm up drills
45 min daily lesson with practice drilling the lesson
30 min of free play or they could continue practicing their lesson. (Throughout the class the instructor would be there to lead the class, teach the lesson & for corrections of students faults)

This idea not only generates more income from the membership to the classes but it also puts bodies in your establishment. If the owners are not skilled enough to teach then they can talk to their local pro and negotiate a split. 50/50 split with 20 students put an extra $1000 a month in each of their pockets and at least 20 bodies in the room 2 days a week. No doubt the classes will bring in new people, which will become regulars plus the classes will give your regulars more incentive to practice. Private lessons from the pro should also be available IMO for the students who want to improve even faster.

Just a thought.

Any ideas on some cheap and effective ways to advertise this? Obviously you could spread the word to your regulars and rely on word of mouth but what are some more creative ideas to bring in new customers who want to learn to play? How could we reach them?

These days, any business without a "web presence", is way behind the times. Have a web site and facebook page and update them frequently with events, news, or just goofy messages that show things are happening: "Had a great time last night at the weekly barbox tourney. Hope to see you next week! Remember, an 8 on the break means free nachos!"

Exactly, email is received on most phones now. Having an email address, web presence even if its a free website is essential. People will give out email but there phone number is more private.

Without that contact you really don't have much cause everyone else is competing for their attention the same way.

Great Point!

Here they tried a "woman's league". Turned out a bunch of lesbians! What a backfire that was, and still is.

Come on, Neil, you and I both know that you like nothing better than watching two girls wrestle on top of a pool table, tearing each others clothes off, and then kissing.

Another word of advice NEVER advertise on a gang operated radio station.

Yes, in advertising and marketing "quality" is always better than "quantity".....of course this wisdom isn't restricted to any particular gender, race, creed, or color.

Actually, I find that disgusting. But, you haven't seen most of these "women" either. They fall a ways out of the "babe" category. Heavy set women trying to look like and act like a guy doesn't float my boat.

Women really like to see they are protected and it sets the "sample example"

That's what's right with pool.
What's wrong is the people. On the right, the snobs that think they own the game and everything about it. Combine them with the cutthroat league player who would poke a kids eye out for a win if it's within the rules. On the left are the people who could give a shit about pool, and people who just want something to do while getting loaded. Then there are people in the middle that respect and love the game They play with sportsmanship for fun. Witch is what pool is supposed to be. Fun.

You've hit the nail right on the head.....it's about creating an atmosphere of FUN.

Organizing leagues is not fun, but creating a social atrmosphere with great music (no juke boxes), and special, VIP treatment for ladies. Ladies want to be treated special, that's the only secret, that means discounts or complimentary pool, drinks, food, valet, etc.

I had a nightclub in North Dallas that had 630,000 Members, MANY of which were female and we catered to them specifically. We had free cover, free pool, discounted "female friendly" food items, free valet, and SECURITY that made sure they were treated with respect and courtesy.

With this formula we were #1 in the state of Texas in liquor sales 2 years in a row (we beat all bars, restaurants and billiard clubs, and behind two strip clubs for obvious reasons;))

There's many ways to cater to women at whatever level you choose, just remember the most important things are safety, cleanliness, clientele, and pricing structure. If someone talks disrespectfully to the female clientele or staff members, it's best to eliminate them immediately for the night or forever, this is a judgement call.

Women really like to see they are protected and it sets the "sample example" in an appropriate manner and will sort out the undesirables in the process.

I always thought 'Thong Thursday' would be a good promotion (with the proper eligibility requirements)

The Boston Billiards in Worcester MA had a bathing suit thing happening during one of the days, of course that chain most shut down (are there ANY BBCs left anywhere now??). Which was odd because it was a better pool room overall than Jillians in the area with better service, hotter waitresses (yea, so I'm shallow at times LOL), and better tables and average player skill. Back in the 90s you could find money players n BBC in Boston but really nothing in Jullians a couple of blocks away, and BBC had some major tournaments held at the place.

One of my main rooms has a pretty sucessful women league, I know several full families that play in the leagues there. Husband in one league, wife in the other and the kid in the Jr league or in one of the regular leagues.

I know one 15 or 16 yr old girl that plays in the Womens' league, the Master's league and the Jr league.

My Master's league team is me, my son and my brother-in-law. I called the team Family Guys. Still trying to create a logo, I think it will be the dad from the show but made into an 8 ball or something.

Has anyone concluded that in 20 years if want to play on a full size table you'll have to do it at your own home or someone else's? And other than that your only other choice will be a bar box in a bar?

No problem, I'll just take my self-navigating flying car from my sleeping pod.

Thank you CJ. #1 liquor sales in Texas? That's a lot of booze. A go to place for women = $$$$$.

it's going to be a heck of a night with 1000 people through the door by 10pm.

Our biggest Hour was 18k.....now that's a lot of booze, AND a lot of service. ;)

Bottle Service certainly helped those numbers, we had a lot of Pro Athletes that night in the VIP Sections. We had four elevated VIP sections and 20 Bartenders on the floor at a time. Our biggest night was $83,000 on Texas/OU Weekend....and broke 75k many times.

On Fridays we spent $800. on a free buffet and consistently did 10k by 10pm....(that was our sales goal too) - you know it's going to be a heck of a night with 1000 people through the door by 10pm. We averaged 50k every Friday night for 15 straight months running that particular promotion.......and yes, the ladies were the catalyst without any doubt.

CJ...I remember those times so well. They are gone and probably forever. Packed night clubs, dance clubs, and band bars filled with heavy drinkers and smokers were a common place in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. With the advent of new smoking laws and new DUI guidelines, the playing field has changed.
