HI all. I am changing pool halls and the new pool hall is running a Valley league. I have been playing on APA and have never played on a Valley league. Are there any major differences I should expect.

I've played Valley for several years now. I tried APA since the tried to start it in our area but the people running it were not running it right or efficiently IMO. The biggest differences is you play 4 people from the other team, once each, instead of a race against 1 person. Also the way you're ranked is much more clear cut than APA, you have an average that's based on how many points you score divided by how many games you played. Much easier to know what you're average is. Thats the big differences between the 2 in my area anyway. Good luck!

And in my area, no real possibility to sandbag because the averages don't stick too much since it's updated with the points weekly. Standings are based on points, so you want all you can get. And no inning counts, etc.

As others have said, you'll see little or no sandbagging. Also no slop. Also World Standardized Rules. Also no arbitrary ratings by league directors.
I played in VNEA leagues from 1980 to 1987 and enjoyed it a lot, especially the trips to the state and national events.

VNEA is the strongest leagues here in SD. APA is more of a beginners league in my eyes. It does a good job with beginners, but doesn't really cater to the advanced folks much.
biggest things I see are:
No Coaching
Call every shot
scoring
VNEA has to be played on a valley.
Phenolic tips and jump cues are allowed.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

...and correct me if I'm wrong, but the national V.N.E.A. team tournament does NOT have handicaps so you bring your best team to compete. No need to sandbag your team to get to Vegas !
Are you sure about that?. This place has all Diamond tables.

Interesting. The V stands for Valley in VNEA. So you would think that would be a requirement.
Not all Valley leagues are 4 man rosters. Or leagues in my city usually are teams of 8 people where 5 play every night. You play each person on the opposing team once. We have also played three player formats as well but if your team were to go to Vegas it is 5.
Some of the rules are similar to APA like ball in hand and things like that. Not sure about your area but here you have to call all shots that aren't obvious, combos, and banks. Also the eight on the break doesn't count.
Scoring is also different. If your league players international rules you get one point for every ball you make plus three for the eight. Our league uses the BCA scoring and plays the 16 point format but that was a local rule only.
If the league is run right it's a lot better than APA. All the money that goes into our league goes back to the players. Usually with 8 teams two get to go to Vegas every year (one has the option to take the money). I have heard that not all local Valley leagues play that way though.

I believe that Valley is also associated with the Diamond tables. I asked about that at a tournament once in Myrtle Beach. I was told that Valley was part owner of the company or something a long those lines. Don't quote me on that though. I work with computers not pool tables.
