You can carve/tool just about anything you want.
Like previous posters have said, it's mainly traditional. Most beginner leather workers get started with 'Western' designs. It's such a tedious process that you can spend the rest of your leather crafting life just trying to master that genre. There is a HUGE variety of leather artisans out there. You just don't see them all that much in the pool cue cases due to it's difficulty and the amount of time it takes. The Cost / Time ratio to make a cue case is brutal.

With that said, there are some of the most amazing and talented case makers here on AZB!

My friend does leather carving and he also uses a lot of flowers in his work and I asked him why. He said that most people start out learning to do flowers because most of basics are taught through flower work. He said it's something that even beginners can do nicely but also allows for the use of advanced techniques and personal expression.
I must say, watching a leather craftsman in action and seeing the designs slowly emerge from a smooth piece of leather is mesmerizing.
