Should we basically do away with the break in 8 / 9 / 10ball?

Should you ALWAYS get to shoot after the break in 8, 9, 10b? ("No Conflict" breaking)

I just bumped into this quote a couple of days ago on Dr. Dave's website. This is interesting because I have had no discussion or contact with Dave. I copied and pasted here:

Dr. Dave (Alciatore): “I personally recommend that everyone (including all leagues and tournaments) use the "No Conflict Rules" for racking and breaking in 8 ball, 9 ball, and 10 ball.”

Hey Paul, guess what? The Mosconi cup changed the breaking rules, and it's NOT to no conflict. Why's that? Because.... it would suck.
Dr. Dave's phd is a pool haters degree.

I can think of better ways to make a point. What this guy is saying is important and a serious consideration. He is saying "This would not be any fun". Just consider for a moment "Grady's Rules for Nine-Ball". His rules took much of the bad luck out of the game and made the game much fairer and more skilled. Here is the problem: HIS RULES ARE NO FUN! No one wants to play by those rules. We are doing recreation and if it ain't no fun, it ain't no good.

I can tell everyone that the "No Conflict Rules" are more fun than our conventional rules. They are more fun for great players, more fun for good and average players, and more fun for lower level players, and more fun to watch. I have extensive experience with it...to the tune of over a half million racks. Don't be so sure that you know what you don't know. If you want to know about this, you would need to play it to find out what it means and to find out if it is any FUN. You would be surprised.

I'm not sure exactly what your point is but below is the poll. 9-ball came in last and 10-ball and 1-P were tops. I think American Rotation or something similar will get more popular in the future, too. Pool is changing. There are more and more players who want to aim at higher skill, not lower skill.

10 Ball 50.71%
One Pocket 39.34%
8 Ball 34.60%
14.1 Continuous 32.23%
9 Ball 25.12%

Be careful who the polling sample is. This poll is like asking a group of obese people: "What is your favorite food?" and then advocating that food for good health. Ten-Ball is where pool goes to die.

I always liked the original 15 Ball Rotation... but people (gamblers) preferred 9-Ball because it was QUICK & full of excitement.

10-Ball is a good game too, but ball count does make for a good game instead of making just 1 ball.

JMHO

Good Luck in all the games you play.

The push out in 9 ball works well. 10 ball is a great game, but in my opinion, it is impractical in most amateur tourneys as it seems to use up much more time than 9 ball or 8 ball. Shoot after the break in 8 ball if you make a ball on the break (still have choice of stripes or solids, no matter what went down); if you don't make a ball, other player gets the shot!

I question the value of questionnaire poll. If you ever want good information, watch what people do...how they spend their time and how they spend their money. This poll does not jive with reality. I am running an event on Saturday 11/23 with the No Conflict Rules. It filled in no time. It has been full for a week and has a waiting list to get in. There are a number of competing events within a couple hundred miles to play in for the players to make a choice. Players from Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia have chosen to come to Erie PA. Player entries are a good poll.

Paul, how are you? Happy holidays.
For a 500 dollar amateur tournament I think people are fine with some unusual rules.
And I hope they have a good time.
I wouldn't expect (or want) to see the rules implemented for any major with pros.
