NO Match for Harriman/Schmidt

Another business entity disrupting pool. Sadly, unproven and with out product to display and no product pipeline.

Just when we thought the bonus ball smoke had cleared this smacks the industry dead in the face.

Poor TAR keeps taking it on the chin. John it is time to man up and show some loyalty. They produced the two prior matches and created the interest in this match. You really need to consider which business relationship is MORE important and investigate terminating the one that does not work for you!

Kid, you and I need to talk. :D

Have you looked at the Str8 Shots website to see how much money they are pouring into pool?

I understand your loyalties to pool entities you enjoy and support, but please reconsider your stance on this one. I think this situation is quite different than Bonus Ball, FWIW.

Call me anytime. :)

LOL, Punter. :grin-square:

Actually, the tension in the pool world today is between the pool purists versus the action enthusiasts. I mean, there's a whole sub-forum on action, here at AzBilliards, which speaks for itself, I guess.

The pool purists, however, would prefer no smack talking and no gambling. There's quite a few of them who post on the Main Forum every day. They believe that gambling is the culprit for keeping pool in the doldrums. In fact, there is a Euro tour that doesn't pay any money to the winners, but they do give out titles and trophies.

As the saying goes, different strokes for different folks. :)

Not disagreeing with you, but I did want to point out that the TAR match ups aren't gambling.

And where did I say that TAR was gambling?

You didn't. I just quoted your post since it was the most recent to mention TAR. I also prefaced it by saying I didn't disagree with you, just so you wouldn't think I was "trolling" you.

Okay, Beiber Lover. Thank you for this valuable contribution to the thread.

It really doesn't matter what the vision/intentions were for this company making this decision. From a PR standpoint, they've now alienated the majority of the worlds biggest Billiards community. Since Billiards doesn't have a major media outlet, AZ Billiards is like the "Sportscenter" of the Billiards world.

Surely their marketing department discussed the benefits of having one of their sponsored players playing in a highly anticipated televised match before making this stance. Which leads me to believe that there are either alterior motives or just sour grapes. In either case, I think irreparable damage to their business has been done since they chose this decision.

Civility Rules in the USA

It has been brought to our attention that there are multiple threads about a possible Schmidt /Harriman match. We know Mark Cantrill started working on this match a couple of days ago and that he has spoken to both players. We were informed last night by Mark Cantrill that both players had agreed verbally with him to do the match. We were told a few hours ago that TAR came in and also made an offer to host the Schmidt /Harriman match.

When Mark Cantrill set about putting this match together, he really had no idea that the level of hostility that existed between the two players was so intense. It did not become apparent until late yesterday afternoon. At that time that he contacted us and shared what he had learned.

Marc and I spent several hours last night and again this afternoon discussing this match. A few minutes ago we had a conference call with both Mark Cantrill and John Schmidt. During that conversation we explained to John Schmidt, who is a Str8 Shots signed player that we did not feel this match was in line with the direction that Str8 Shots intends to take the players, the team, or the company. We understand why this match is such a hot topic and why it would be an exceptional PPV event. The reasons that make this match so attractive to those that would buy it, are the very reasons we feel it is not in John’s best interest.

We chose several professional players to be a part of team Str8 Shots because they are all great people. Every one of them has a contract with us. In that contract it states that they will get permission from Str8 Shots management before engaging in activities, or aligning themselves, with individuals or activities that could be potentially harmful to their images, the company’s image, or the industry’s image.

When we plan matches, we have a purpose for them above and beyond providing the players with opportunities to test their skills or generate some additional income. Our opinion is that this match only serves to create additional animosity between these players and that is not what we want for any player; whether they are associated with this company or not.

We understand that both offers made to the men provided them with the potential to make several thousand dollars. We are also aware that the money to be made off of this PPV match by Str8 Shots or TAR could be quite substantial. That being said, we have asked John Schmidt NOT to do this match. John Schmidt will be compensated by Str8 Shots for the potential loss of income. He has generously offered to donate a portion of those monies to the Str8 Shots Juniors program.

Thank you for your time. I hope you all have a wonderful evening.

In the US, we settle settle many disagreements in a civil manner. Irregardless of what many (here and abroad) believe. We do not try to overthrow the gov't because politicians make decision that are bad...we have future elections. The Yankees and Red Sox settle their "hatred" for one another on the baseball field. The Tar Heels and Blue Devils settle their disagreements on court. Because of hatred, it seems that this is a perfect example to show that "your" pool player can act in a civil manner and settle this thing like a civil man on a pool table. I guess that is not how you guys see things.

Daren believes that the world would be a much better place if people settled their differences on the pool table.

Makes perfect sense. Nothing is worse for pro pool than real exposure, real competition, and guaranteed payouts. Wait... it's the other way around.

Why don't you tell us what this is really about. Sounds to me like St8 Shots wants a cut of the PPV revenue.

So are they guaranteeing him the winner's payout or the loser's?

I think this has been a learning experience for St8tshots...pretty sure this whole episode has brought quite a bit to light for them.

Mainly because AZB members have a tendency to behave like hysterical schoolgirls, as parts of this thread demonstrate.

Exactly. Amazing how so many are so quick to run off at the mouth and condemn others just because they didn't get their little fix. Half of them posting wouldn't have watched it anyways. Let's forget about the hours of phone calls that were made, let's forget about someone else barging in trying to take over what they have stated they never wanted a part of again, let's forget about any actual facts. Just condemn because you didn't get your way. Like a bunch of kids throwing a tantrum. They aren't whats bad for pool. Many of the reactions on here are though. :(

So their reasoning behind not letting this happen is the animosity between John and Danny.

Question for those that saw the first two matches.

How many times did each player attack the other, either verbally or physically? Were the matches great because of that (if anything did happen), or because you got to see two great players play some great pool.

A company like Str8Shots could be a great thing for pool, but you're bound to piss a few people off when you go against a proven entity such as TAR. Funny how CueTech didn't seem to mind this when Shane played Mike D. on TAR.

Anyone who says that this is simply about watching two great pool players play pool is
either full of it or completely delusional. This is about the drama. I admit I think it would
be fun to watch. It makes it more interesting -but don't suggest it's about people's pure love
for pool and just the desire to watch two players play a tiebreaker. There might be a few
people that this holds true for, but for the vast majority, this match carries the appeal of
a potential train-wreck drama festival. Why does this match get so much attention when
the Shane Efren draw hardly created a stir before the match?

It irks me how many people feel compelled to instantly voice negativity about an issue on
these forums. Not very many, if any of us, can say that we fully understand the details of
the situation. Some people might be in the know, but a huge amount of the people that pour
into these threads undoubtedly know nothing other than that they might not get to see a
potential train-wreck and they want to cry about it like a two year old. People admittedly
don't even know what str8t shots is but still trash it. I don't know what they are so I have
no opinion on them or their position on this match. Str8t shots might be good people; might
be bad people. I have no clue. They might be in it solely for financial gain and using
less admirable tactics to achieve it…or they might be someone who is actually doing
something for a sport that they would like to see change it’s colors, such a stance
would completely explain to myself why they would find it counter-productive to allow one
of their players to put himself in a situation where he might lose his cool and show his ass.
Let’s give them some time to make more than one post before they get attacked from all sides.

What I do have an opinion on is all the *****ing that comes in droves. Ask some questions.
That's the great thing about this forum is the spreading and sharing of information
-not attacking people whenever you see an opening. It comes across as pathetic. You’re
entitled to your opinion. I guess you could say this is all just my opinion. I greatly appreciate
the very generous members on here that are willing to share their knowledge. I’ve learned a
great deal from this forum. Sometimes I get a little uncomfortable reading a lava flow
of negative spew. I realize it’s inevitable. I’m not directing this towards anyone in particular,
but this one goes out to the many people that make this forum a less enjoyable place sometimes.

I am going to try and give you the sponsor's perspective here. As someone who has been involved with sponsoring players for 20 years I can see Str8Shot's position somewhat.

Especially if their focus has been on the Junior programs prior to this venture.

I used to speak with Janet Shimel once in a while and when Earl was dropped by Cuetec he made some really nasty remarks about the brand, the cue and the people who supported him for so long. I asked Janet how she felt about those comments and she said they hurt her deeply because for the duration of the whole sponsorship she had dealt with people threatening to and actually boycotting her brand because of Earl's antics. She fielded the calls, she was presented with the emails, she read the forum comments.

And more importantly she spent tons of time on the phone with Earl trying to help him get humself under control and had considered him a friend. She saw the good side of Earl and that was a major reason why they continued with him even though the value to the brand was iffy.

So I can understand the reluctance to allow a player to be put into a situation that is geared towards intense conflict where so many words have been exchanged that it's not a professional rivalry anymore but almost outright hatred.

For a young company trying to project a positive image the last thing they want is one of their star players to be remembered most for having it out on camera with his hated rival. While that might make for great "tv" it's not what they want associated with their brand. I can respect that as a sponsor.

But here is what I would do because I respect the player as a human who should have the freedom to play who he wants to. I would have talked with John and made sure to extract a promise that his own demeanor would remain professional and thus the result would most likely be a a great match with both players staying cool OR if Danny were to get out of line John would be the shining example to the world of how a pro stays cool under fire.

I would definitely allow the match to happen.

John, this comment makes alot of sense to me. Thanks for presenting it. But, it leads me to another question...Do they not trust their player to act civil during a pool match? It seems like this is the perfect opportunity for their player to show younger players the importance of civility. Whether you like someone or not you can still compete on the table and represent your sponsors (and their younger players) well. All sports are based on camaraderie.

Why does this match get so much attention when
the Shane Efren TAR hardly created a stir?

That's where I stopped reading.

The Shane/Efren all-around was one of the best match ups TAR has given us. The one pocket set is easily one of the greatest sets ever recorded.

Have you looked at the Str8 Shots website to see how much money they are pouring into pool?

It looks like they are an online Billiard and Dart retailer. They are a store like Seiberts, Hawleys, etc.

Seems like they are trying to find a niche in the market no one else is trying to attract and that would be junior players, hoping they might be long term customers? Smart? Could be.

They don't promote tournaments...they want to promote their store.

They really aren't doing much more than tons of pool room, bar owners and other retailers have done over the years. Sponsering teams, players, giving kids cues and such.

Wishing them success.

I was talking about leading up to the Shane Efren match. The draw of two pool legends paled in comparison to the hype this potential match is creating in just a day on the forum
