Any drills to improve????

I am by definition a casual player. I play pool once every few months, at most, on and off for 20 years. And when I play, my main objective is to have fun.

Just to give everyone an idea of where my game is, my high run in straight pool is 6 or 7 on a 9-ft table. Yup, my high run is 6,7.

Anyway, I'd like to improve my game a little as I think that is my main weakness is pocketing balls. Are there any drills out there that teach people to improve making shots? I am not looking to improve much, I am too old for that. Just want to improve my game a little where I can consistely run 10 balls - wide open - in straight pool.

Raise,

One of the most helpful drills I've used is take all 15 balls, put one ball 1 inch off the rail at every other diamond not using the middle diamonds. Then put the remaining 3 balls at the spots and center of the table. Every rail section will have 2 balls, with 3a down the center.

Take ball in hand and shoot till you miss. You can shoot any ball you want, but you cannot hit another ball....when you do, start over. When this becomes easy to clear all 15 balls, put them about a 1/4" from the rail.....this will make it way harder.

Sorry, I can't remember the name of the drill, but it's one one of the best.
I love showing this to some of the bangers in my leagues, they usually say " oh that looks easy" then they run 5 or 6...get alittle out of shape, and boom.....start over.

If you really want to improve, you need to improve your stroke. The best way to do that is with some instruction from a qualified teacher (someone who uses video analysis). They will provide you with some drills to build your stroke, as well as learn how to pocket balls.

Thanks, I'll try that. Sounds very difficult, but I'll try.
I'm disappointed with the number of responses so far. I know less about straightpool than anybody living. Willie Mosconi on the other hand knew quite a bit. Here are some drills he suggested. If you can do the first one, you are on your way.

Thanks. I'll surely practice that.
Way to lay it down champ. Who you trying to trap?

I really don't play pool much at all. And when I do, I just want to relax and have fun. ;)

I would love instructions, if I play more often. Unfortunately, I rarely get a chance to play.

I want to be perfectly up front with you, just today I made this thread:

So what I can give you in terms of what to practise is very limited, I don't know that myself. I can't teach you how to run 100 balls, I can't do that myself. I'm not sure if I can teach you to run 50 balls, I can barely do that myself. There are a million drills people can suggest to you, but only you yourself know what your weaknesses and strengths are. You want to learn how to pocket balls, is what I get from your post. What balls are you missing? Do you miss because you are out of postion or do you miss easy shots? You've got to give us more to go on.

I'm not trying to be harsh, in fact the exact opposite. I don't want you to waste time like I did, practising stuff that won't help you. I can tell you one thing that I believe is not a waste of time, that was taught to me by a guy I really respect. Throw 5 balls out, run 4 and try to get position on the last one as a breakball. You can start with ball in hand in the beginning. Later try it without ball in hand. THAT i believe will help you. You will at the very least understand what you can and cannot do.

I miss easy shots. :embarrassed2:

probably a very inconsistent stroke.

Take the cue ball and put it in line with the center dot on the end of the table (like you are going to break) then aim for the dot at the other end of the table, try to hit that dot with the cue ball, and leave your cue stick on the table after you shoot. The whole point is to see if the cue ball will bounce back and hit your stick. Do this a bunch of times until the cue ball comes straight back and hits your stick more often than not.
