tone down stainless steel joint

I get very distracted with the shine of a stainless steel joint while shooting. Is there any way to darken it with out changing the joint itself ? Make it as close to black as possible?
 
quick question, how does it distract you while shooting? I can't even see the joint on my cue when i'm down in my stance unless i look at the floor. Have you ever tried phenolic or synthetic joints? i imagine you could either sleeve the ss joint with some darker material or simply paint over it.
 
I am thinking you would have to etch it with some kind of acid that would leave it black/darker, but I'm not a metallurgist, so I don't know what that would be. But that might also roughen up the surface and take the polish off, so it might be hard to sell the cue later. You'd have to have the SS collar replaced probably.
Too bad you can't anodize stainless :(

Take a piece of steel wool to it to make it dull. If you go to sell it then just polish back.

Great memory and suggestions.
Measureman, I thought the Dykem marking fluid sounded the best, but finding it in a small quantity may be your challenge unless you know a machinist.

I can see what you mean. It would be fairly easy to just replace the joint collar with another material (anything from antler to phenolic to ivory, even cueball material could be used). I would bet it would be cheaper to go with this route that to bother altering the current joint. Any local cue repair person should be able to do that. What kind of cue is it by the way?

I would go with the steel wool. That's easily the easiest fix. Of course, a little more focus would make it disappear.
 
a jeweler can burn it using chemicals and polish to a beautiful gun blue satin shine.
you'll be happy and once you're happy with it, you'll ignore it.
afterward it could be engraved because the white steel is still there under the charcoal blue.
 
Get some colored tape, the color you prefer. Wrap that around the joint. Problem solved. Need to sell the cue, get some adhesive remover and job done. Bet you already have these things at your house.
 
Scuff it then use cold blue. That's your best bet for metal (specifically stainless steel).

There are a million ways you could do it, but cold bluing can be removed. Not easily, but easier than painting the joint.
