The prize: a hardback copy of the autobiography (somewhat fictional) "The Bank Shot and Other Great Robberies" by Minnesota Fats and Tom Fox, plus a small paper back by Fats.

The question: On what date did Fats apply for a Social Security number?

Rules: Closest answer wins. Earliest answer wins ties. Contest ends on January 19th (his 101st birthday) at noon AZ time. Post your answer here.

Hints: He didn't get a SSN until after "The Hustler" came out. He got one before "The Bank Shot" came out in 1966.

1964 ss 322-42-2375 according to ss records Rudolf Wanderone

Oops just read the last sentence, I didn't think he ever had one. I don't have a clue but thanks for the trivia!

one book is telling me after the hustler released in 1964 (which was released 9/25/1964. Another book is saying he got the card in early 1965.

without contacting SSA to find date of application, hard to say what the exact date is.

According to IMDB "The Hustler" was released in September, 1961: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054997/

No one has the right date yet according to the copy of the application that I have. (I'm going to take a year guess as July 1st of that year for those who are imprecise.)

I'll guess December 4, 1964.

U.J. Puckett never had one until the Legends of Pool competitions, from what I've heard.

Jan 17,65 was also when Rozel published Fat's first book, Minnesota "Fats" Book of Billiards.

Are you talking about Fats

Or the real Fats that was a monster player sued by fats for using the name that fats stole from him? I obviously haven't seen the book. The real Fats was the player of the two.
Nick :)

I'm guessing that Minnesota Fats never got an SSN.....

...but Rudolf Wanderone might have....

Well, the name listed under "full name you will use in work or business" was listed as Minnesota Fats on his application, which is immediately followed by "name given you at birth". In the info I've seen, it's not clear when the family name changed from Wanderon to Wanderone. And is the final "e" supposed to be pronounced so as to rhyme with Mosconi?

One of the guesses above is correct within two weeks but no one has the right answer yet. Here are the two books:

I should have known not to mess with you...he was indeed born as
Wanderon......later changed to Wanderone, but not clear if it was a legal
name change.

I've been sorting out my storage recently and I've found I own both
Fats books....and I found another one that drove me nuts years ago...
...I bought it with the intention of doing every shot in it.....
....well, I couldn't...:embarrassed2:

It was The Shots of Artistic Billiards........by Bob Jewett...:bow-down:
