So many tips, so hard to decide on which one to try!

My Tip Rankings

#1. Original Moori
#2. French Red Back Champions
#3. Old Pre 2000 Lepro
#4. Ultraskin Mediums
#5. Superpro
#6. Sniper

For Fast Cloth I.E. Brand NEW Simonis Cloth. It slides and I Prefer a Hard Superpro!!!

For Slow Mud Cloth I prefer Ultraskin Medium

Snipers made the list but they do have to have a BREAK IN period!!! I almost cut it off several times and after months of use it is HIGHLY reliable and the chalk impregnated in the leather gives more spin and less miscues. But, getting to that Sweet spot is challenging!

Wow, thats one flat tip, lol.. Its really funny that were talking about this over the last few days, because I just had a guy come in this afternoon looking for someone to shape his Black Kamui tip that was installed on a shaft he got for xmas. It was installed by the company he got the shaft from, and it looks very similar to yours, but yours is still flatter. Its the first pic below, then a pic of it after I shaped it up for him to a dime radius.

I played with Kamui Black Soft for about 3 years...loved it, but have moved on to POOLDAWG8's milk duds. At $3 a tip, you can't beat it, and I actually like it better than the Kamui! They play awesome, great action/grip, perfect feedback, no soft/hard spots.

As for bevel of the Kamui Black, I found the nickel bevel to be the ideal curvature for action; the dime shape had a lot less spin/action for me for some reason. I read somewhere that they recommend a flatter surface than conventional tips, and once I reshaped it to a nickel bevel the difference was amazing (even if it's counterintuitive).

Hey Chris (Renfro),

Can you comment on your Ki-Tech tips (tip set S,M, H etc) as to how they fit into the List from Pool Dawg?

Thanks Randy

Randy,

I won't go into the shore A vs D debate... but I am in the shore D camp for measuring tips... on a shore D Ki-Tech Soft runs from 70-72 medium 72-74 and hard 78-80... There is no true conversion from shore A to shore D as the force and foot are different between the 2 testers..... I also need to say these measurements are based on dwell and not peak...

If you notice on these videos cuetips1000 uses a shore D but they are using the peak hardness and not the reading after allowing the foot to remain in contact to allow the pressure of the spring time to set the foot.... If they had used dwell they would have recorded measurements few points lower than they did....

I am not sure if pool dawg actually uses peak or dwell in their A tests but at 2.2lbs of spring pressure on their type A I would bet that the dwell would have zero effect on the measurements.....

The ASTM standard for testing requires the dwell.. I can find the citation if anyone really wants to see it....

Well Joe Blackburn recommended I try a black heart hard (black) after playing with a medium tip for 15 years its the best tip I've ever played with.

tip

I used a Talisman medium, layered tip for a looong time. I thought I played pretty well too...UNTIL I tried a Moori medium, layered tip in 2012 late. I couldn't believe why they were so expensive until I used one. WOW! The performance of Moori is WAAAY better than Talisman IMO. They grab the ball better so everything you put on the ball is accentuated. Talisman ( for me ) slid right off the ball and barely gave me anything. I sold my Predator shaft when I found Moori tips, as Moori did the same for me a Predator shaft did! I wanna try a Predator shaft with a Moori tip now, I bet that combo is amazing!! Depending on what you want, I recommend Moori - not Talisman. Good luck

Going to attempt to reshape the kamui black soft on our own tonight, good luck to us!

Why I love Snipers

Lesh,

Please tell us how you decided upon Sniper based upon these data and your experiences. While my experiences are not representative of these results, I am interested to hear more about yours.

Absolutely, and thank you for the additional data on the manufacturers claimed hardness.

I ran through a few different tips since installing a tip takes all of 10 minutes for me.
I settled on Snipers because they tend to harden over time into something akin to a really good triangle without the mushrooming. I've been through a few of them now and I have yet to have a bad one. Some are softer than others, but all of them harden up nicely over time. Just resist the urge to scuff them up... and you better not use a pick tool of ANY KIND on Snipers IMO this is really destructive.

I feel tip picks are a Taiwanese plot to subvert free will.

Snipers are mushy and I like the idea of a single slab of leather over the layered thing. But for my money now and less hassle, I stick with Snipers. I have snipers that are over a year old on shafts and they are doing well. They grab the Cue Ball and provide instant feedback from the hit.

Ki-Tech soft is a single layered so you can pick until your hearts content and they will more than hold up to the sniper in playing characteristics and longevity.....
