Ok, this is a strange one.....but it used to hold true when I skated amateur....certain music blaring at the parks would determine how well I performed at the skatepark that day....mood altering I don't know....but like skateboarding, the idea of 'mood altering' music faded away....I quit skating for good when I was 32, 8 years ago.

Anyway, I have an HTPC setup to play random tracks from my classic rock category (I have a massive MP3 collection, approaching 1TB of pure music), so there were 10's of thousands of songs for it to choose from.....so I'm just hitting balls around, music at a normal listening level, when this song comes on....

All of a sudden, for a few minutes, its like I never quit playing pool....I started making shots I should never be completing. Ran out 2x 9-ball racks back to back....first time since I started playing again....and I haven't been able to do it again....

Lets hear some songs you like to play to.....youtube links work great for this.

cant wait to see what everyone says.
ive only been playing again for around a month. i enjoy talking to whomever i am playing. learn about them, their cue, whatever. just make friends i guess, but some people hate talking while they play.
id rather talk because it keeps me more at ease and doesnt let the pressure set in for some reason.
however, i am going to start taking some buds to listen to music when i get against those players who dont like talking.

i have been thinking about what kind of music would be best because i like dang near everything, just havent quite thought of what would put me in the pocketing mood

I hate talking. I wish a pool hall was like a library. I don't want to hear about the shot you missed last night when you were on the hill. Or how you are thinking of getting a new wrap put on, or worse, about problems at home. I want to play pool.

The only thing worse than that is crappy music. I carry an ipod with wireless bluetooth headphones with a "playing pool" playlist just in case I got a talker or they are playing death metal or rap.

I know the OP is new here, and I certainly don't wanna be that guy who says "use the search funstion, dammit" :p

This has come up many, many times in the 4+ years I've been here. If you really want to know, there are a number of examples out there. Multi-page threads, lots of time and discussion.

My answer... I can listen to pretty much anything, other than extreme metal and extreme rap/hip-hop. And non-stop country would probably wear on me too. Some country stuff thrown in the mix doesn't bother me at all. I have been a DJ and played in bands so at this point I've played and heard it all, and it doesn't matter, at least while I'm out for the evening.

I am also one that prefers it to not be so quiet that I can hear the conversations around me too easily. It distracts me, which I realize is a failing of mine. The music doesn't have to be really loud, but at least a volume that helps ignore the chatter. The room I play out of about half the time is a private club, and on our league nights, there is also a cribbage league playing at the beginning of the night, so we can't play the jukebox till later. No music, just chatter. Very distracting, to me.

Classic rock would be my preference.

I don't know if you use the music site called "Pandora" or not but you can tell it what type of song you like and it will create a playlist for you.

I told it to play "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" and it played a nice blend of mellow blues that reminded me of my old pool room.

If you haven't tried it give it a shot, it's free.

Johnny Lang's Rack 'em Up

Anything by Stevie Ray Vaughan, anytime. ZZTop works too.

Bob Seger stuff is good, but doesn't have the same bite as SRV or ZZ.

It's free, for a while....there us an hours played limit per month, methinks 40, which is quite a bit for some folks, not so for others.

Slacker radio is similar, except their free version is unlimited, and has a few ads occasionally.

Both services are pretty cool.

As long as it's in the play list in my head I'm good to go. If something is playing that I don't know (or like.. aka "disco rap crap"), then I start humming to myself.

I got everybody beat

I got everybody BEAT on their beats, and I still can't beat anybody. :) :)

What I DO, is redub MY voice with positive instructions in mix with the music track that is playing. This project hasn't gone to far yet, since I simply haven't taken the time to finish it. It is a SIMPLE project but it takes time...depending upon how many instructions you want to put and how often you want to hear them. You can do this with the most BASIC of FREE music mixing software or you can spend as much money at the music studios do. The CHOICE is up to YOU.

The IDEA is sort of like a "subliminal" message. Something to remind you, while you are listening to YOUR favorite music.

You are hearing "YOURSELF" remind YOU to:

- Keep your eye on the ball
- Stay down
- Make sure you stay chalked
- Look at the shot from a different angle before you shoot
- Etc, etc, etc.

If you DON'T like your OWN voice doing it, you can have someone else read the instructions. You can space them out where you only hear one instruction per song, or however many you want to hear. I would SUGGEST your instructions are kept to the minimum number and then repeated through a "loop". You can loop them in random order or in a set order.

The idea is LIMITLESS. Up to YOU.

I was going to make a BASIC "demo" to show people at one time and then OFFER to do all the "mixing" for them should they let me know what music they wanted and what "instructions", but then it gets into a LEGAL deal if you are using copywrited music and making money on somebody else's music.

I never got into any legal research, because I don't know if it would be a money making deal. You would probably lose your ass on this deal because pool players don't even want to pay for water in the pool hall.

Bottom line is if "you can't handle YOURSELF telling YOU what to do" while you are shooting, who can you handle?

News at 6. Now a word from our sponsor.

Aloha.

P.S., In case somebody must ASK, I am playing this in my earbuds...NOT on the JUKEBOX.

Really?! This is my ram shot song!

Whenever I hear the name "Judas Priest" and think about their reputation and shit, I always think, "damn, those were some hardcore rockers..." And then I hear their music and think, "that's not so bad." I should invite them for tea. :)

I do not consider this hardcore, but 311 and this song in particular song was my soundtrack in college.

I'm sure there was a few....but a little redundancy is good for a forum, keeps things stirred and active... ;) Trust me on that one. If everyone searched, there would be no new threads on a larger forum....and then the forum stagnates....or an over-moderated forum, repetitious threads are removed, which is typically the beginning of the end.

SRV and ZZ-top....nice!! I'm developing a dedicated 'pool only' playlist with a selection of songs that I guess you could say would get me more 'stoked' for the game....as if the game itself isn't enough to get stoked about, I think the right music simply enhances it.
