Cue ball on the rail and draw help

I'm a C/B player. Been playing for years. Lately I have been having trouble when the cue ball is on the rail, especially on straight in shots. I don't miscue but I seem to be pushing the cue and the object ball misses the pocket to either side. Also I am having trouble with my long draw shots. I used to be able to hit a long shot and draw the ball back the length of the table. Now the cue doesn't draw at all or it rolls back about 3 or 4 inches.

On the rail shots I tend to shorten up on the cue and press down on the cue so when I hit the cue ball my tip doesn't slide over the top of the ball. Now on the draw shots I think I am holding the cue with a light grip but I'm probably gripping tightly when I'm striking the cue ball.

Any suggestions that could ring a bell in this old frustrated head?

Dollars to doughnuts you're not hitting the CB where you think you are. Possibly dropping your shoulder/elbow prior to making contact with the CB.

Start with rail shots. 1) Take a stance as close as possible to your regular stance despite the rail. 2) Use your bridge hand to press HARD, VERY HARD, DOWN into the rail. Creating a stable bridge will enable smooth cue movement.

Try a Jim Rempe cue ball....you will soon learn the answer.

i bought a rempe cue ball
what blew my mind
is that its really the upper or lower half tip that hits the cue ball except on center ball hits( i knew that conceptually)
so i was surprised where the chalk mark was for "extremem draw" shots
so when i thought i was as low as i could go i really could go a half tip lower
i hope ive explained myself adequately

Yeah, once I got my Rempe ball things started to make more sense. ;)

During the recent TAR podcast with Orcollo and Appleton, Daz was explaining how you get better draw by not hitting the ball hard and just getting a smooth stroke through the ball. He then went on to demonstrate what he meant. Funny thing is that when you slow it down and look at it frame-by-frame you can clearly see he was hitting the ball lower on the more relaxed stroke. He must have been tensing up a bit when he struck the ball real hard, forcing the tip to hit higher on the ball and reducing the back spin.

The best draw for me is when my wrist is relaxed and loose, and I'm basically just throwing the cue forward at the ball. When you relax and just let the cue go, it follows a straight path, hitting the CB low like you meant to instead of forcing the tip up through muscle tension. At least that's what works best for me.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Low, level, loose draws your rock! Let the cue do the work, instead of trying to 'force' the stick through the CB. BTW, any striped ball will work just as well as the expensive Rempe ball!
